gamakam,
Very well written tribute to DKP.
Went through your blog and was happy that you are here on the forum. Though called tamizhstudio, your blog includes other aspects of the arts too. I am going to learn quite a few new tamizh words! The format and the 'get up' of the blog is tastefully done. Thanks.

if you are lalitha ram then 'arasi' (our resident poet) will indeed give you a red carpet welcome to the forum..
Not that I do not join her in bidding you a warm welcome...

Gamakam

Excellently written article in a very professional way without too many hyperbole. Loved reading it especially as it is in Tamil. Is the entire site your blog? Amazing. I will try to go through other sections.

P.S. Just thought that I will point out a minor thing. The next (aduthu) from the first page still points to the same page instead of next page. It will be nice if it is corrected.

s_hari, cmlover, arasi, sramaswamy thanks for the encoraging words.

thamizhstudio is not entirely my blog. It is a portal for arts and cinema run by my friend. I write a weekly column on music. I also occasionally write on my blog http://carnaticmusicreview.wordpress.com/

cmlover: I'm Lalitha Ram. I've written a biography on GNB for vikatan publications.

I guess I can't blow my own trumpet any louder. Thanks again for the welcome.

Very good! I would encourage him to do so. His writing style is quite refreshing.
My apologies for mistaking the sex...

Well, I like 'his' writing too.

CML,
Thanks for thinking of me and about my wish that more women get interested in participating on the forum.

gamakam(lalitha ram)
I have not had time yet to read your latest blog, since it is in thamizh I need more time to read , assimilate to understand despite thamizh being my mother tongue. One of the finest articles you had written about few years before was about GopAlakrishna bHarathi . That was just a top class one.

It seems to me that 'Mamava Pattabhirama' was composed by Sri Dikshitar for D.K.P.amma to render. As she renders each line the coronation of SriRama is conjured in front of our eyes.Indeed she is born to show to the world the majestic swells and magnificence of Dikshitar Kritis to the world.Like MS amma for Annamacharya,MLV amma for Purandaradasa,DKP amma for Dikshitar.Just experience her 'Pahimam Ratnachalanayaka' in mukhari. Her 'sowkhyam' in rendering is her hallmark.

Does anyone have recordings of DKP from her younger days? Except the Shyamala Dandakam, I haven't heard any other recording.

We grew up listening to that rendition of 'Mamava Pattabhi rama' on a 78 rpm record. All of us practically know that kriti by heart just by listening to those records umpteen times in our younger days.
How sad it is that we need to correct the above post to read ' Indeed she WAS born....' and 'her sowkhyam in rendering WAS her hall mark' ...that is when the full impact - that she is no more, strikes you. This year has been particularly cruel to Indian music.

A song that touched me was :

Padma Vibhushan DK Pattammal-Thamarai malar ondru kandenThilong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_R_gfIlJ-0o

This Song was composed by Kavi Kannan on Maha Periava and popularised by Smt DKP

I happened to tune in to DD Podhigai today around 1130am and was surprised to see the progarm titled "Rasikapriya" anchored by Smt. Bhuvana Venkatesh. I was happy to know that it was an interview with Smt. DKP amma and for quiet some time i was totally struck to tv not knowing what was happening around! Then i realised i could have at least recorded it in my digital camera and all i could record was just the krithi Sri Parthasarathy in Suddha Dhanyasi sung by this Legendary Musician! I am sure this would be available in full length some where! but just to share my joy of having seen this programme i thought of uploading whatever i ahd recorded. You can view it in the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAFTPm1MFa4

DKP amma was talking about her early days of singing, her experience of learning couple of krithis from Sri Ambi Dikshidar and later from Sri TLV and so on.

It is a repeat telecast and hope this series will be repeated from this Monday. If any one has any news on Podhigai programs, please inform so that many can watch this great series where many great musicians have been interviewed.

Right. It took the rAjan of nAgarAjan and translated to King.

But if you put the various related pieces in a separte line, google does better

டி.கே.பட்டம்மாள்.
தம்பூரா இசைப்பவர் தந்தை கிருஷ்ணஸ்வாமி தீட்சிதர்.
அருகில் தம்பி
டி.கே.நாகராஜன்

translates to

Pattammal D.K..
Tampura icaippavar
Father kirusnasvami titcitar.
Near brother
Nagarajan D.K.

Though it does not know the contextual difference between "sitting nearby, brother D.K. Nagarajan" and 'near brother D.K. Nagarajan'

May be translation is a bigger hammer for this, transliteration would have been a better fit. May be both.

In Sri Pasupathy's blogspot, there is a piece on Smt. DKP: http://s-pasupathy.blogspot.com/2014/04/34.html.
Kalki Sri Krishnamurthy had composed four songs for Smt. Pattamal to sing in concerts - one of which is the famous pUnkuyil kUvum. Are recordings of the other compositions available, by Smt. DKP, especially from the iSataTTugal (gramaphone records) that were realeased in the 1940s?

Gist for some who may not be able to follow Tamizh script:
Born as daughter of Damal Sri Krishnaswamy who was a teacher in Kanchipuram. He encouraged her musical talent. She could sing slokas even at four years of age and win recognition.
She sang in a public meeting addressed by Gandhi and won applause.
Songs in films:
ThyAga BhUmi: Desa sevai seyya vArIr; Bandham akanru nam thirunAdu uytthiDa.
Nam iruvar: ADuvome paLLu pADuvome (this was broadcast on AIR on the 15th Aug 1947, for which she declined remuneration); Vetri ettu dikkumetta.
Mahatma Udankar: KANa Aval kondengum en vizhika; kunjitha pAdam ninainthurukum.
ThyAgayyA: Radhika KrishNA; Ninainthurukum ennai.
Rama Rajya: Enakkun irupadam.
VethALa ulakam: ThIrAtha viLaiyAttu piLLai; ThUndiR puzhuvinai pol.
Pizhaikkum vazhi: EngaL nAttukentha nAddu periyathu; mudalai vAyil; kottai kattAdeDA.
VAzhkkai: Bharatha samudAyam vAzhkave.
LAvanyA: Pazham BhAratha nannADu.
Vanasundari: NADu sezhitthiDavum uLLame nADu.
He Ram: Vaishnava Janatho.
In Tirunelveli, BhArathiyAr’s wife heard her sing BhArathiyAr’s songs and shed tears. She told DKP that BhArathiyAr would have been very pleased to hear it.
On 30th Jan 1948, when Gandhi was assassinated, she set SAnthi nilava vendum to tune and sang on AIR. She refused remuneration for it.
She has been awarded Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards by GOI.
