Unforgettable even if "Sangita Kalanidhi" not awarded

Post by Rsachi »

Dear Rasikas,
I have often sensed among forumites a deep nostalgia and reverence for the truly great in CM who died unrecognised by MA with the award of SK.

How about channelling our energies in collecting
* Tributes by the cognoscenti
* Definitive musical recordings
* Rare memoirs

Of these Unforgettable even if unawarded Sangita Kalanidhis ?
This can be rasikas.org way of repaying these great artistes. Maybe we can get Parivadini to do video documentaries on them!

So start writing, folks!

Some names come readily to mind
PAZHANI
SOMU
BALACHANDER
MALI
KALYANARAMAN

To add to the list of names:
Smt. Mukta (I think it was asinine of the MA to not award her the SK, when they awarded Smt. Brinda) - thankfully, that policy has changed with awards to the Sikkil Sisters and Bombay Sisters together.
Smts. Radha and Jayalakshmi

Asnine as it may, it is not too late to award SK posthumously. I suggest we make a combined appeal to MA.

Sir, my idea was not to petition MA. Let us simply offer our tribute, maybe produce a documentary (one or a series) on this theme with researched content, music etc. for posterity. For example we have six names already,,, maybe a couple of documentaries.

I wonder if Sruti has already attempted this. The idea is not to challenge MA or petition MA. Elsewhere I have already stated how I think MA has an unenviable task.

I think giving posthumous awards, whether Sangita Kalanidhi or Bharat Ratna, is a bit of a joke, being played on a gullible populace. Imagine giving the Bharat Ratna to say Shivaji or Swami Vivekananda etc.

Thanks for the topic title edit...sounds better :)

I applaud the effort. The original statutes did not provide for posthumous awards for Bharat Ratna , but they were amended to allow so in January 1955 - 11 posthumously awarded.

The above musicians may have died bit prematurely cannot really fault MA as that particular year there were many contestants, but one musician who was just passed who is always there in my mind is

With the help of people like Varsha,
Why don't we collect some definitive music tracks of these masters and help Parivadini publish a series of documentaries....

The MA follows the tradition of the SK presiding over the sadas; posthumous award might fall beyond the powers of MA.

Laudable..

even though purpose is unclear...

All the artists in the list above are great and tributes can be theirs..

Are we going to find out as to who among them are great by playing some available concerts?

and available titbits about them...as it is beyond our reach to make suggestions to MA....

If it is only to play good available concert for enjoyment of rasikas ..most welcome.....

My basic suggestion is to convert our sense of nostalgia and a feeling that they were denied their due into an activity of collecting and sharing tributes, music and memoirs so that these great musicians will live in our memory.

Noble goal indeed, Rsachi. That is in fact a better recognition than SK itself.

"so that these great musicians will live in our memory."

Are they not now?

" That is in fact a better recognition than SK itself."
How do you say it..vk?

There are scores of people who are not aware of the existence of our forum
whereas they are aware of the extension of this forum at FB..

Apart from this, for many of the artists listed above, there are separate groups where many many of their renditions are brought forth..I have come across many new renditions by these artists posted by members..many groups have membership of around 4000/5000..

As both of you are in FB, you must be aware of it....

I was going by the general notion: what does one want to be known by? Their titles or their life's work?
One does not have control over others in issuing titles but the life's work is predominatly in their control.
So if we recognize the latter that means something directly to the artist. If we recognize the former, we are operating at one level of indirection. Hence I provide a higher value judgement to the latter.
For example, I do not know nor care if prof. Samba murthy is a SK, but his books define him much more than the titles.

That is what I meant

How we do that is a matter of detail and what we may do here is a good start. And before even this thread you have been doing that by tasting good music and sharing it with others. So you are indeed doing that work.

Sri. Venkatakailasam,
Even if there is another ten percent of sharing information and music in respect of these greats through this endeavour, it will serve three purposes:
1. We will be doing something rather than just cribbing
2. I have faith in rasikas.org and its FB avatar as a go-to place for many great rasikas. So we will be doing something in the right place.
3. Anything more consolidated and indexed and curated adds a great deal of value to information which may lie here and there.

People like you and Varsha have been doing this for years, hats off to you sirs. And people like VKV have raised the bar re. MMI (Cienu re. MSS, Raj Namboodari re.MDR, etc.)

I am just a newbie and you can see a pattern to my ideas.... Collect.Organize.Publish.Spread.

RSachi...

It is not my intention to derail the project which you have so enthusiastically started...
I just wanted to know the purpose and as to how you are going to achieve it..
In whatever way want it to be...kindly proceed..

The music world is big...Just peep out the four walls of this forum..
The social media is formidable ...
There are hundred of rasikas for carnatic music,Bajans and namasankeerthanams.
They not only listen but also feed...

Incidentally, I have observed that on many days there is no feeding here in this forum...
It commences only after 6/7 pm...with postings by members who return from offices
and when the western world wakes up..
Only two people take care of the forum...during day time..Bing and Vidyaraja

I HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFULLY TRYING TO DO EXACTLY THIS FOR THE PAST QUARTER OF A CENTURY THO' I WAS WILLING TO FINANCIALLY SUPPORT THE EFFORTS & provide recordings etc.
Every time I am asked to speak I throw this idea but there have been no takers. In my opinion IT SHD BE HELD IN PUBLIC IN CHENNAI OR BANGALORE. As it is I am doing this daily in my music room. When the technology improves may be in the future or in a parallel universe these magical musical waves will be recovered....
It is a mystery while many wax eloquent in these pages when it comes to volunteers to something concrete I FIND IT AN ELUSIVE PROPOSITION....vkv

Sir, Let us start working together on this one.
There are 3 parts:
1. Articles by people like you, MKR etc.
2. Music recordings with URL links
3. Memoirs and anecdotes.

1 and 3 can be topically shared here.
2. can also be shared here. I request one person particularly resourceful and passionate about the artiste to start this off.

The title for each artiste can be like this:
Unrecognised Sangeetha Kalanidhi: S. Balachander

Eventually we may even hold a meeting celebrating the artiste, like you did so well for Madurai Mani Iyer, but perhaps not on such a big scale. But starting is everything, I think, sir.

For example we can start with S. Kalyanaraman....
Although there are commercial DVDs dedicated to him, rasikas.org has the power and reach to bring out new facets, new music recordings, new anecdotes...

Instead of opening a new thread for each of those who was missed, you can go to respective thread in vidwan and vidushi and share the 3 parts that Sachi talks about.

VKV,
All I can offer as a non-techie is to translate nuggets about these greats.

Chellappa,
What Pasupathy has brought to us about Somu in the past few days is priceless. You can join in with the translation.

Rajesh,
I would not have done my homework right, but I do not seem to find any posts at all about Somu in recent times! I did find one thread in Vidwans and Vidushis which is stagnating. No recent posts at all in that!

Sangeetha Kalanidhi eventhough unawarded: Madurai S. Somasundaram
Arasi, kindly translate those Tamizh nuggets.
I will post links to some OUSTANDING concerts immediately therafter.

Ref. to the above post 32.
Great performnce.

The varnam sounds to be in Narayanagowla composed by Veena Kuppier.

This is a different one than his MA - 1965 concert which also has the same varnam as the first item.

T R Mahalingam a.k.a Flute Mali. Ignoring his personal traits that have been mentioned time and again, his contributions to the carnatic flute have been immense and that alone should have been the reason for him being awarded the SK.

In the history of the Sangitha Kalanidhi from 1929 to 2017, please note that only 89 musicians and musicologists have ever got the award.

The musical community as such is way bigger than this.
