The connection to MDR with Amrutha Venkatesh keeps coming back. Good. When I first listened to her excellent and unique Bhavayami Raghuramam, I was reminded of MDR also. We talked about this in a different thread a few months back (http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 68#p233868 ) And recently Keerthi invoked MDR when describing how she splits the words in Bhavayami.

Circa 2004-2006--my late father K.S.Mahadevan was plugging hard with the Chennai Sabhas to give this upcoming artist(@ that time!!!) a chance. It finally happened in the Dec 2006 season--I forget the name of the institution--the call came to my father fromthe Sabha Secretary on Sept 4,2006@3:30 P.M.--my mother takes the call and conveys to my father the message to my father who was critically ill and asks himWHY he would lower his stature to "champion" young artistes before Sabhas who are loathe to experimkent with new artists however talented they may be--my father replies(he was still conscious) "So what if the Sabhas turn down my recommendation--they are the "losers" and not me".

He died peacefully 2 hours later @5:30 P.M. That was the last "young" artist that he championed and won!!!!

This year is his 100th Birth centenary which the family (in conjunctionwith Krishna Gana Sabha)is planning to celebrate on August 4@ KGS Hall,Chennai.

Details to follow--Forumites who are in Chennai or who may be visiting Chennai at that time ARE ALL INVITED!!!

I am so glad that he championed her, and so glad that he was successful. Have diaried Aug 4th.

There has been quite a lot written about her here. I thought she already had her own thread, but I suppose it must have been on individual concert reports. One of my favourites :)

I heard her about 7 years back (when she was < 18 years old) and was bewitched by the mature rendering of Subhapantuvarali.

Today she is fairly well known and here is a recording of her recent concert in Bangalore- 17.11.2013. It is downloadable. As she gets more popular, she may herself not permit circulation of these concerts. But as of now, she is OK with it!!

Enjoy.

In 2008, several young and upcoming artists, Amrutha Venkatesh among them, signed 5-year exclusive recording contracts with a Carnatic music recording label. During that time, all those artists restricted rasikas from recording their concerts.

It seems the 5-year term is up and Amrutha has chosen not to enlist again. That would explain why a Nov 2013 concert is available to us.

Sometimes it is the artists but mostly it is the recording label that prevents concerts from being widely shared.

One must go to a T N Seshagopalan concert. There will be at least 20 persons recording the concert with recorders placed near the speakers at various locations, never asking TNS for permission.

TNS's attitude of course is understandable: even if you record and listen to the recording a million times you can't still sing like him!

Amrutha Venkatesh has been awarded the "Best Female Vocalist" by the Music Academy for the year 2013. It was announced during Sri.Rama Varma/ Amrutha concert yesterday in Bangalore. She richly deserves it.

Others can fill in details of other awardees.

Indeed. Singing without any accompaniment is not easy. And it turned out to be quite positive since it was just her, the lyrics and the melody. There is no where to hide but she does not need any hiding! I don't think I have ever paid this much attention to the lyrics from beginning to end of 'thIrAda vilayAttu pillai'.
