Smt. Sumathi Krishnan is the disciple of Sangeeta Kalanidhi Smt.R.Vedavalli. She is seen accompanying her guru playing tambura.

Profile of the artist :

Dr. Sumathi Krishnan did her initial training in Carnatic music with Sri Sankaranarayan of Calcutta. Her early focus however was in Hindustani Bhajans as a student of Sri Srikant Bakre (a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan). After a 15 year period teaching high-school Geography she re-ignited her music career as a a graded artist singing Bhajans on All India Radio.

During this period she also began learning from Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. R. Vedavalli. Over the past 18 years, she has imbibed the musical tradition of her accomplished Guru. As Smt. Vedavalli’s student, Dr. Krishnan has accompanied her guru on stage in both national and international concerts.

Dr. Krishnan completed her doctoral training at Mother Teresa Women’s University (Kodaikanal) under the supervision of well-known ethnomusicologist Dr. S.A.K. Durga. Her PhD thesis focused on varnams for voice training and creativity.

1. Carnatic music concerts organised by Nada Inbam, Narada Gana Sabha, Nada Sudha, Nadopasana, Saraswati Vaggeyakara Trust, Ragatarangini and Rasika Fine Arts
2. Lecture demonstrations in Narada Gana Sabha, Music Academy Madras, Parthasarathy Sabha, C.P. Foundation (Chennai), Shanmukhananda Music School (Mumbai)
3. Lecture demonstration topics have included Varnams for Voice Training, The Singing Voice, Variety in Varnams, Pancalinga Kritis of Muthuswami Dikshitar, Dikshitar and Tiruvarur, Siva Shakti, Walajapet Venkataramana Bhagavatar, Tyagaraja on Tulasi

1. Research Fellowship awarded by Music Academy Madras (2009)
2. Written journal articles (Sangeet Natak Akademi, Shanmukha, Sruti)
3. Authored book ‘Muthuswami Dikshitar and Tiruvarur’
4. Presented papers at various seminars on music (organized by ITC Sangita Research Academy Kolkata; All India Institute of Speech and Hearing Mysore, Indian Musicological Society, Mumbai; Indiranagar Sangita Sabha, Bangalore)

She is well known to all of us to whom Smt Vedavalli is well known, and Sumathi's concerts are appreciated in their own right.

She deserves much more recognition as an artist in her own right and a representative of SMt RV's great school. She deserves more concerts!

Sumathi Krishnan takes an attempt to present very rare unknown krithis . Sumathi is the disciple of vidushi R Vedavalli, I wish one of the days i hear her exclusive concert . review in The Hindu dated Jan 19th,2018
