Visalakshi Nityanand

Post by shankarank »

Based on recent re-discovery on my side and discussions in the forum, starting a thread on this artist who renders wholesome music.

The only concert in person I attended - in NGS mini hall 2002. An item I remember : ni bhakti bhagya sudha. Jayamanohari. To tell the truth I did enjoy the robustness in her music, but did not appreciate enough to remember too much.

This one I remember since, a loquacious young gentlemen - not sure if he was related to this artiste - came sat next watching me as he was surprised a 30s something person was sitting in that concert. He was too enthusiastic to tell the people in the front , that nI bhakti bhAgayasudha is the only kriti of tyAgaraja in jayamanohari.

A Chicago organizer later mentioned something about sponsoring her - not sure if that happened or not. I also remember some coverage in Sangeetham.com.

Well looks like there has been a discussion in this forum:

Before we complain about Sabha Secrataries , lets us reflect on our own trained ears as to what we value as music. We complain all the about time about golden days.

Hearing the hari tum haro, it appears to me that MSS' great grand daughter can imbibe some of the musical values in there. Here is an artist not endowed so much in voice ( from the appeal sense!), that still does take it to heights. May be that Vishalakshi may not be able to make a come back.

But others can take the lead.

You are right. I forgot. I don't know if he was wrong or I am wrong remembering it. Either way, I know I was in the concert and this person did say something to that effect. Cut me some slack - its been 15 years.

I usually hear quite a spectrum of artists. But I did not get a chance to hear this lovely vidushi Visalakshi Nityanand. Certainly lot of Hindustani glides every where but as such she has a lot of great ideas . There is jeer and lot of huskiness in her voice. I wish soon to hear her in a live concert. She has learnt from her father Trivandrum R S Mani(is he a student of SSI does any one know more about RS mani). Has visalakshi learnt from anyone other than RS Mani.

Trivandrum Sri RS Mani Iyer indeed was one of the prime disciples of Semmangudi Sri Srinivasa Iyer. He did not go after concert opportunities much as others. A great artist with a beautiful sruti laden voice. Sad, he passed away fairly at a young age sometime in the late 80s. Visalakshi Nithynand is a fabulous artist with a huge repertoire and the music is always fresh.

Kaani nilam vendum - Pantuvarali - Mahakavi Bharathiyar
I dont know the tune smith. I am just floored by this extraordinary vidushi, what a joy to hear this rendition. Visalakshi nityanand and Trivandrum Balaji are cousins . May i know who the tunesmith of the song is?. She has to be featured far more in chennai music circle.

What power of voice and azhuttam with such carnatic sampradaya suddham. Way to go vidushi Visalakshi Nityanand

I beleive this kriti was tuned by her Later Father Trivandrum Sri R S Mani, one of those Senior Disciples of Semmangudi.

She is indeed a lovely artist!
