Palghat Ramprasad

Post by rajeshnat »

A musician who in my opinion is intensely classical . His music in my words is more like stepping inside a very gentle river from inside, once you put your feet inside the undercurrent pull is great. Needless to say his father Rajaraman has trained him,and his paternal grandfather is the mrudangam maestro Palakkad Mani Iyer.

I just said the below in a review of his a day back

If you metaphorically think a concert is like entering a river . Palghat Ramprasad is a musician where from outside it may appear the river is bit more calm but as you keep your foot in the river the undercurrent pull is much much more deep. As I was listening I saw his father Rajaraman cheering his son ,the very first concert when I attended Ramprasad in sastri hall (that review is either here or in sangeetham.com jungle ), Rajaraman and Palakkad Raghu cheered Ramprasad . Ramprasad has amazing male voice(a bit of ramnad krishnan , KVN and DKJ is there). I was particularly impressedd that his direction is also going in the direction of bit more speed like the himalayan giants like MMI-SSI-GNB since last time I heard.

If you are a Carnatic music student or an aspiring musician, this is an interview you don't want to miss. Read about Dr Ramprasad's excruciating practice sessions, his unwavering focus, his penchant for 'pracheena' sangeetham...and be inspired!

Read the whole interview. Wow, a truly brilliant man. It had been hard work and even harder work to come up to where he is. But I wonder if his idealism has set the bar impractically high and has only held him back the whole time.

I do not know when Nivedita wrote about Nick and the young cm singer Chong from Malaysia. Just came upon it when I read her latest write up about Dr. Ramprasad. Hope others have read it too...
The pictures in both stories add to the content of them richly.

I am sitting here at BVB mini for Karthik Fine Arts and listening to a superlative bEgaDa right now. This man is a genius. What incredible manodharma! The house is sold out too.

Boggles my mind how did he manage to juggle a PhD in Harvard, an international career and music (vocal and some of violin and mridangam) and then give up said career in economics for music?

Any fears I had about his standards getting in the way of his musical recognition are firmly in the grave now. They may RIP, literally.
