It is quite nice of Vijaya Siva to have sung her composition "Mathada" in Kamas in MA this evening.

Bangalore Nagarathnamma has also composed the tyAgarAja ashTOttarashata nAmAvaLi condensing his life story. I believe it is chanted during the pUjA at the ArAdhana.

(It goes against T's grain who was totally against 'narastuti' :)

It goes against T's grain who was totally against 'narastuti'
brahmavid brahmaiva bhavati.
What is the difference between 'nara' and 'nArAyaNa'?

The 'narastuti' shunned by both Thyagaraja and MD refers to those - 'durmArga cara adhamulu'.

Aren't all of us idolators? IMHO - worst kind of idolatory is - idolising one's ego.

Hmmm.. the video in that page does not play for me. After attempting to connect for a few seconds, it says 'Ready' and that is it.

Yes, I have it in itx format. I wondered if anyone can convert it and post in several languages on the Wiki site. Maybe someone can also offer translation as well? Please drop me a message if you can do this.

O Gem of a woman Nagaratnamma;
Kindly accept my salutations;

Having born in the lineage of Gandharva;
One who has sought refuge in Thyagaraja - Ocean of Music;

Knowledge of music without true devotion;
Will not lead to the Righteous path - the one who said;
Having accepted his words as True;
Having dedicated everything (to Him) - His;
Who hath become extoller - who is equal to You?

Your devotion and Your Love;
Brimming Aradhana celebrations;
Today in the hands selfish people;
Has become a laughing stock; that
Days' condition will it come back - O Mother?

In His holy presence ever abiding;
Bliss attaining fortunate one; Our
Desire to fulfil and to grace us;
By telling Him kindly favour us; musical
Nectarine rain may you make it shower again.

Bangalore Nagaratnamma was an admirer of H H Bhakta Gnanananda Tirtha. At one point of time she requested him to stay at Tyagaraja’s Samadhi and promissed that she will make all the arrangements to make his stay comfortable. At the same time she thought that he will get good recognition for his music .Then the Saint told her that his mission on this earth was to live in seclusion worshipping GAYATRY and composing songs in her praise and doing her service. For this purpose only he left his concerts also when he was at peak of his profession as an vocal artist.
During one of the meetings she offered him some money with fruits in his honour after listening to his songs rendered by him.
Then politely he refused to take money telling about his principle and accepted some fruits.

During her life she has propagated the song in the raga composed by Bhakta Gnanananda Tirtha.

Smt.Janaki Subramaniam, an octogenarian, who started learning from Bangalore Nagarathnamma from the age of 7 till her last days, and who had collected substantial funds for building the Thyagaraja Swamigal Samadhi at Thiruvaiyaru has written a book on Bangalore Nagarathnamma. The book named Anjali is available with her at the following address. Even at this age she is singing. Every year she had been attending the Thiruvaiyaru festival.
