no, I have not watched any vedio of him singing. But have heard his recordings from my teacher, even when we are driving to a saree shop for shopping.

Today I was chatting to one of Lalgudi J's fav student Pakal Ramadas (he is here in Sydney at the moment) and he was talking about the 'dwi madyama ragas' which kalayanaraman did on the first 36 melakartha ragas. Ramadas sir played for the recording and apparently after the playing for couple of weeks he couldn't touch the violin because his fingers would not stay steady on the notes (utter confusion after playing 2 madyamams). So, he was saying that if thats how much confusion he was enduring after playing just imagine the amount of depth of music that must have been within Kalyanaraman to have actually come up with the idea and have demonstrated that!! he simply said that 'he was a maha vidwan'....

Hariguna - Deepavali - Meera (Sangeethapriya - Raju Asokan link)

Is it raga Deepali (SKR announces it as Deepali, but the announcement is a little bit hurried) ?
Is it a Hindustani raga ?

Deepavali, an evening HindustAni Raag, has been created by Flutist PannAlAl Ghosh. This raag is said to be a blend of both raags Yaman & lalit of HM.

Thanks Kulkarniji. Here is some more,

Raag Deepavali (Nityanand Haldipur,Sandeep Bhattacharya),
Raag Dev Gandhaar (Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan)

Episode 4 : Special Divali Repertoire by Nityanand Haldipur, Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan

from Underscore Records Podcasts
Deepavali is a raag created by flute maestro Pannalal Ghosh whose playing style Nityanand follows closely.

The introductory alaap in Raag Deepavali makes it evident that it seems to be primarily a blend of
Raag Yaman and Raag Lalit, but Nityanand Haldipur explains that Pannalal Ghosh meant it to be a
murchhana of Raag Puriya Kalyan. The alaap is followed by a gat in Raag Deepavali composed by
Pannalal Ghosh, who is the creator of this beautiful evening raag.

I strongly feel that TSK was TOO BRILLIANT for him to succeed in POPULARITY contests which ultimately decide who is great etc. He insisted on violating the Cardinal rule by singing rare ragas, compositions etc not familiar to audiences. In the process in my view he made himself immortal when it comes to creativity & the rendering of Jayadevar's Asthapathis & Koteeswara Iyer's Kanda Ganamudam 72 mela kartha kritis - the latter incidentally one of the MANY "for all time" contributions of Sri.S.Rajam. vkv

Thanks to Arasi for giving the link.
Though TSKR had remained unhonoured during his lifetime, I am sure he will be SUNG from now on;Thanks to the initiative taken recently and now by Sanjay. Thodi alapana is just different and out of the world .Let this forum also bringout samples of his Srutibedam (he would have definitely handled given his scholarly approach).
Yagapriya(31) for my easy understanding ,I could recollect "Sri Janakathanaye"-Kalakanti-Thyagaraja-(13)-Puritans please excuse.

I am impressed by his advice to Vidushi.Bhushani Kalyanaraman(Chat corner -Friday review Hindu today)"music should be your tapasya.Do not rest on your laurels.Always raise the bar and strive for excellence.Listen to and absorb from different banis, but sculpt an individual style, infusing your ideas and singing from the heart.work hard, with concentration ,irrespective of whether concerts come your way."-nicely reported by Mrs.Lalithaa Krishnan.

All,
Yesterday(June 2nd,2009) I had a chance to see about 30 minutes of the TSK - DVD that was screened , the DVD was the second of the series from swaathi's sanskrithi. It was brilliant one titled "Tanjore S kalyanaraman- ahead of his times".

Just recollecting few of the visual and audio experiences of that DVD. As I entered sikkil gurucharan was talking about kApi madhurapuna krithi in kApi and as he finished out popped up the krithi of TSK.Then violinist sanjeev talked beautifully about the way TSK has handled hameerkalyAni .

AnurAdha sriram spoke briefly about the way TSK handles few rare krithi and out popped up "uNNai arindhavar" , it was a beautiful rAgam and loads of melody i did not get that rAgam. Gurucharan briefly came back again and talked about dwijAvanthi and out popped ashtapathi . Then sandeep nArayanan (I have seen him a lot in rAgasudha as a rasika , never knew his face), he spoke beautifully and aptly about dwi madhyama handling by TSK . There was a brief talk by sanjay subrahmanyan where he said next to KSK he is heavily influenced by him.

PERHAPS THE BEST OF BEST TRIBUTE was by mahA vidwan Prof TRS who said about his contemporary TSK ,he said like thyagarAja TSK is recognized much much more only after leaving all of us , that was a fitting tribute.

There was also a brief senjuruTTi "vAzhum vazhi KAttu" , but the best moment was when subramania bharathi sketch was drawn, and then a sumenasa ranjani??? krithi "uNNmai arindavar" popped out.

Subramania BharathiyAr lyrics with TSK delivery was an unforgettable combination, what an expression and what a blend.

 karni,
I wish you were there , you are the karana kartha for me to appreciate TSK and TRS and when vidwan TRS talked about TSK I was thinking about you. I bought both dvds (the first volume was screened last year) , they both cost 400 Rs (second one is Rs 250/-). I will gift both of that to you, just in case if you dont have it. :) :)

Rajeshnat, I do not know if you or anyone noticed. In the last song, he did sruthibedam in senjuriti. He sang Bilahari in anu pallavi and Karaharapriya in charanam. This shows his inimitable skill in the art where he could even think of doing sruthibedam even in ragams like senjuriti. Hats off to this mahavidwan!.

The song was tuned by him.

On Voice Culture Research of Maestro TSK
I was fortunate to attend a seminar on Voice Culture Organized by Brihadhwani and ITC Sangeeth Peeth, Kolkata, at Music Academy, Chennai. Great Maestros/Maestros from both Classical CM and HM and Film Music presented papers and talks, presided over by Shri KVN.
Shri TSK presented his paper. He had mentioned that the problems of his naturally endowed voice in it's usage and deliverance of his ideas, prompted him to make a deep study and the paper is the result of this study(I would term it , as a research paper).
At the end of the seminar, my Guru and Father Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao went up to TSK and hailed his paper was the Best of all the papers presented at the Seminar. TSK was moved and said the compliments and blessings from him, made him immensely happy( moved and was in tears).
I strongly wish that this paper has to be published for the benefit of all students, teachers and practitioner's of CM, if not already published. Smt Bhushany Kalyanaraman, if she is in possession of the paper or Brihadhwani can arrange for it's publication.

I'm just discovering this great vidwan, the RTP here is magical:

http://www.sangeethapriya.org/Downloads/skr/msgkm/

It's a Ranjani family RTP - Ranjani, Manoranjani, Janaranjani and SriRanjani - if I've got them all right.

I'm floored how beautifully he blends in these contrasting ragas together. MSG gives inimitable support, and this track is a sublime hearing experience.

Just came across this nice article on SKR: He loved to experiment
>>Kalyanaraman’s musical experiments fructified as original varnams, kritis in rare ragas like Madhuri and Vanathi, tillanas and ashtaragamalikas.

Are there any recordings of renderings of his compositions?

Thanks, Balakk for posting this here. That was a very nice tribute. It is truly touching when Sanjay says that he is where is today, because of SKR's music.

From what I see, Sanjay's concert at the SKR memorial event was spectacular. I hope the concert gets released commercially!
