Re: M.L.Vasanthakumari
All of us know that MLV was a trendsetter and she did many innovations within the boundaries of carnatic classical music. I am not going to elaborate any thing new.
In another thread (Review of Sowmya concert in KGS) there was a discussion on singing swaras for two places in a song. As requested by our member Rsachi, I am giving the links for a song Chinthayama kandamoolakandam where MLV had done elaborate neraval and swaras for the charanam first line Mangalakara mandahaasa vadanam and again she has done some cracker second kala swaras at Uthunga kamaneeya- Madhyamakalam.

I am repeating the post in this thread so that many people may notice it and enjoy the song.

Thank you, CRama. Abhishek did this at a recent concert and I was wondering if someone had done this before.
Excellent version by MLV.

CRama,
Rock solid stuff from MLV. There seems to have been nothing tentative in her music! Listening to her, I think she was a life-long learner and innovator and pretty much a lone ranger the way she approached music. I wonder if I am right.
Thanks!
sachi
PS: if you play the same track on VLC Player with equaliser double pass, you can significantly enhance the music. I would gladly show you by a clip, but I am right now "powerless" in waking up my desktop right now....
PPS: in the context of the query, the first speed itself is pretty fast in MLV's rendition...
wonder if the contrast in the two speeds would be even more striking if the first speed had been slower. sorry if I am triggering a sterile discussion here.

Re: M.L.Vasanthakumari
Folks: This is a rare picture of the GreatLadies Trio--the lady sitting to the left of MSAmma is my mother Narayani(alias Chinnani)--she is 94 and can sing(although slightly off key!) all the 32 Todi kritis of Saint Thyagaraja even today!! Sitting to my mother's left is the late Vijaya(daughter of the Sadasivams)
At my father's 90th Birthday in 2003,DKP and MSAmma sang Mamava Pattabhirama together for the first time !! That was a n era where great celebrities like MS Amma,DKP and MLV mingled with ordinary folks like us who had not much of musical credentials or achievements to write about.
Our family is indebted to all those musicians--male and female--who enriched our lives not only with their music but also with their unconditional friendships.

Thank you for the link.
Can someone confirm if the person standing next to Smt. MLV in Photo 48/48 was her daughter, the actress Srividya?

I heard that MD did not compose the Chittaswaram for this ragamalika. It was MLV who composed the chittaswaram. Very intelligently crafted chittaswaram. Pranams to her vidwath and manodharmam.

truly a legend...I was fortunate that VidvAn Smt M L V was the one who introduced me to all the teachers in Rishi Valley High School just before my joining...MahAvidwAn Sri Palghat Mani Iyer had prepared a special mridangam for vidwAn Smt MLV's pitch to be used to teach me to accompany for songs...unfortunately that did not materialise as Mahavidwan Sri PMI passed away in May 1981. We consulted with Smt MLV and she too felt that I should continue my education back in Bombay only.

Re: M.L.Vasanthakumari
A share from my friend
From G N B's brother
I would like to share an anecdote relating to MLV.
My brother GNB's eldest daughter Jayalaksmi's marriage was fixed, I think , in 1959/60. She was literally crazy of MLV. and MLV never left our house whenever she visited us for learning music, without spending some time with her. My brother, immediately fixed his MANASIKA Guru Ariyakydi's concert for the reception.
When MLV came to know of the marriage, she told my brother that she will sing for her reception. My brother had to tell her about the concert already fixed. She immediately said, " What if? Let him sing as usual at 6 PM reception and I will sing in the night at 9PM. My brother readily consented , to his daughters great delight.
Needless to say, both the performances were extra-ordinarily superb and when the function was over, when all of us, family members went to the Dining hall at 12.30AM, there was nothing left except for rice, Vathakuzhambu and Curd rice. The big pandal at Edward Elliot's road was overflowing with rasikas .
This is yet another instance to show her dedication to her Guru as also the spontaneous warmth and affection she had for all of in our family. A lovable personality indeed, whose memory we very fondly cherish.

There was a video that runs for just 5 minutes of a performance of MLV of a composition of Sri.Muthuswamy Dikshidar 'Pahimam Parvatim Parameswarim' in the raga Mohanam and this was available in the YouTube for sometime but is not available now.
If anyone has a copy of this available with him, may please upload again and give the link.

sarvAntaryAmi - perhaps MA concert for the centenary bi-centenary of Thyagaraja - again she seems to be the only one to have sung it in a concert. I haven't come across anyone else rendering that one.
Update: that is a Ambujam Krishna song.

Re: M.L.Vasanthakumari
What is the ragam of thedi thedi? I have not heard that so far.
Sarvantharyami- Radha Jayalakshmi has also sung that.
There is another rare song of Tyagaraja in that concert of MLV- Kshetrapalaka in Bilahari. I have not heard that song from any body else.

The link for the concert is available in the topic I have posted in Sahitya forum. You could download and listen. Starts with thOdi and a fantastic mOhanam + tAnam + yEn paLLi. Haven't yet listened to the rest of the concert.

Dear Rasikas
That 1960 concert of Smt MLV seems to be a concert of some later year. Her sound is seems to be more like that of late 70s and some voice to support her in the audio? Can somebody clarify?
