S.Shankar is one such teacher who is more focused on the cleanliness of the swaras. He is precise in getting the rendition of the swaras from his students. Hence you are able to get the clarity in singing and get the full benefit of listening. Blessed are his students who will get the best of music to themselves and also to all listners around. I haven't heared anyone who is so particular in the out come of the notes in the current generation. For him music is a penance and he is so clear and so divine in his thoughts about everything in life. As a person who has seen him so close for more than 20 years now he is surely a role model for anyone who wants to achieve anything in life let alone music.

S.Shankar's Sharanu Sharde Vani in Ranjini, Manava Nillisuvudu Balu Kashta in Nilambari, and Maara Janaka Chaturaanana ...a mangala geethe in Sindhu Bhairavi are unparalleled renderings. 'Paahi Raama Chandra Raghava' is one such kruti that he sings which actually gives you an opportunity to clearly imagine the sequence how Saint Sri Thyagaraja might have rendered when he actually composed...

Isn't he also known as Bangalore S. Shankar? If so, we already have a topic/thread on Bangalore Sri S. Shankar. Can this one be merged with the older one?

I moved the thread here.

Yes, Bangalore S. Shankar is a well known figure in these circles and there are a few threads on him but I can not locate them readily. We will either merge or provide pointers to those threads from here.

Truly a great concert. Highlight of the concert is the Kambhoji. I had put up the link in the Suryaprakash conecrt review couple of days ago.

The music is of high quality but one thing I noticed from the video is that Sri Shankar does not interact with his accompanists or the audience much at all. His eyes either are closed or are gazed downwards. I think interaction plays a big role in the overall success and popularity of an artist.

Not really, Mohan. I have attended this concert, and there was no lack of interaction from his side. As you rightly observed, he closes his eyes during some of the intricate swaras or raga phrases, may be to retain the concentration. The Essae Music Foundation settings are very serene, with almost no distance between the singer and the audience. Needless to say, this was one brilliant concert.

Sreeni Rajarao - thanks for the link to his webpage. Yes, there are a few nice audio recordings at the site.
I don't quite understand why this vidwan has not received the recognition he surely deserves.

Bangalore shankar is indeed a brilliant musician . Having talked and spent time with him and heard 4 concerts (2 of which was rasikas concerts), he is to me a clever mix of 4 musicians , a major KVN(hear his keeravAni and madhyamAvati) and definitely a minor touch of Musiri (MM gowlai), a very slight touch of MDR and a penchant of being a student of Smt vallabham kalyAnasundaram (who is a sister of Mayuram vishwanatha sastri), I atleast think there is a lot of touch of maharajapuram school when he sings ragamAlika slokham or viruththam of composers like padmacharan and madurai T srinivasan. Each of his slokhas or viruththams or ugabhoogas are very very expansive and emotive. Is his mother smt rajamma sAstry and vallabham kalAnasundaram sisters, is a question that I wanted to ask him(if somebody helps that would be great)

RT,
You are absolutely right ,he has not been recognized that much. I remember writing long time back in the review that for his age and vidwat he has to sit in a slot in between OST and Neyveli.

Rajesh,
I have learned that Sri. Shankar's mother Smt. Rajamma Shastry and his Guru Smt. Vallabham Kalyanasundaram are not sisters.

r-t,
I heard him at an earlier Essae Foundation concert a couple of years ago. Nagaraj played the violin too. He reminded me a lot of AriyakkuDi (Rajesh says it as well). The ambience and hospitality at Essae is something to experience! It's a pity almost every concert of theirs happen when I am not in India :(

bangalore gayana samaja is a sabha ,say like parthasarathy swami sabha . Just like PSS gives sangeetha kala sarathy , gayana samaja gives sangeetha kalaratna.
I think the equivalent of kalaimamani is karnataka rajyotsava - i can be corrected if i am wrong.

Congratulations to Bangalore shankar.

The title Kala Ratna is given by. Bangalore Gayana Samaja, a trust akin to Music Academy.
The Karanataka government has another title Rajyotsava award. Then there is Ganakala Bhushana a title given by Karanataka Ganakala Parishat, a musicians trust.

You will find many concerts of Bangalore S Shankar in Sangeethapriya:

He mentions it is a composition of BK Padmanabha Rao (disciple of Mysore Vasudevacharya).
