My two cents. Just a different viwpoint, nothing more. It was indeed magnificent accompaniment for the jAvaLi. As much as it is difficult to sing or play it in that beautiful "renDungeTTAn" kAlapramANam, it is equally difficult to accompany too. If you happen to listen to the varieties of the sollus that TS has employed in that, it is unbelievable, starting from the gumukkis, to the mEl kAlam sollus (If one can carefully notice, the mEl kAla sollus, were predominantly in the mEETu, than in the black patch portion, justifying the context of melody and the mood of the song.

There is obviously the easy way out by playing a subdued role (This doesnt mean to say that a Mrudanga vidhwan should dominate proceedings) in the name of embellishing. But this was embellishing the music to a different plane all together, which i strongly believe, separates the great from the good ones.

Am still in awe of Vidhwans like UKS/ TS as to how they managed to come out of the shadows of PMI/ PSP respectively, made so many sollus their own, managed to build a edifice around their own style, without deviating from tradition, that there is hardly anything left to improvise upon, which they have not done over the years.

I fully agree with Semmu's opinion!
And Varsha-ji: Thanks for the the SKR clips. I love his Ganapate mahamate! No one has done it better, imho.

Couldnt resist sharing this. SSI-LGJ-Sankaran, 1973. A beautiful thani avarthanam following a divine "samAnamevaru"

https://archive.org/details/09Thaniavarthanam

Semmangudi mama's pleading bordering on frustration to the blissfully ignorant unfortunate LOT abandoning the thani. "vAschathuku apram ezhundhu pOngO. idhu anAgarigam illiyO?" TS continues unfazed and its a thani to cherish as always.

The icing comes at the end.... I don't know if its me or anyone else, but looking back I feel very pained at the fact that how difficult it must have been for TS to abandon such a career here in India and go to Canada. Semmangudi mama once confided to me that he had the greatest affection and regards for TS, amongst the galaxy of great Mrudangam vidwans who have accompanied him. The final comment testifying to it.

What a lovely video capturing this RR Sabha curtain raiser of Sankaran Sir documentary. Particularly I adored the way Cleveland Sundaram Sir spoke , so many lovely anecdotes with no exaggeration and only truth,I wish more and more speakers adopt his approach , he shares with such passion . Also Neyveli prepared very well and spoke with few great touch points . Ravikiran anecdotes were nice and finally few points from ever joyful MC Sir and Ken Shorley(his disciple from canada). The hostess Anu Kannan(doordarshan) I saw her recently speaking in a concert in ratnagireeshwarar temple ,she is a lovely compere. Finally Sankaran Sir finished with his talk with his anecdote of semmangudi and he ending in kapali temple. Sankaran sir has also felt if he can perform for next dec season is quite a head turner even himalayan greats have that feeling - certainly Art is surely greater than the artist.

Sbkanthan,
Just in case if you are reading please also interview Mahavishnu(Ramesh) and possibly Semmu86 who know so much about Sankaran Sir. They both have also learnt mrudangam and have performed for few concerts. Their inputs will be a treasure . Please also take help from varsha (Kulkarni sir) he must have most recordings.

Also very nice of u to announce that you are also taking up MC sir documentary just like Sankaran Sir. Looking forward to the documentary of Trichy sankaran and MC.

So did I! Despite my lack of understanding. OK, I admit that I dipped into it, but I did watch all of Trichy Sankaran's speech: his energy comes over, even without understanding the words.

The following concert was excellent too.

Would have been at the function/concert but was engaged in another happy event: the wedding of Cienu's daughter S Aishwaryia. (Whoa! Cleveland Sundaram was in Mylapore on Saturday evening and Chidambaram on Sunday morning!)

A couple of years ago, I heard from somewhere about a concert in which Shri Santhanam was accompanied by Lalgudi Jayaraman and Trichy Sankaran in 1968. Don't know more details though.

I took adambakkam video and just moved the pointer to the point where I adore mahavidwan Tiger Sankaran sir .

Just hear from the point below to say 3 mins and then read the subsequent points
https://youtu.be/ihy2GREEbOA?t=539

# What a quality of naadham?IT is mrudhu angam not mridangam
# In one of the lecdems@Mudhra sankaran sir says specifically that he always plays more sollus and avoids theermanam . See how much of sollus he develops?
# O gosh what a left thoppi sound i wish the video is taken from an angle like T20 match drone eye camera to show simultaneous left and right.
# There is Tiruchirappalli- Heat wave and also lot of Toronto - Cold windchill wave - surprisingly from the same set of fingers both are equally bearable. :P

Great admiring mini review @@rajeshnat
- That valamthalai nadham is so pronounced when he mixes in those simple sollus which make use of the nadham to convey much more than sollus themselves setting up the mood and anticipation
- actually that would be cool if they had a drone or a crane or have two cameras for each side and just show split screen.

Found this gem of Sankaran Mama on kanjira (!) accompanying T. Vishwa Mama (usual some flute/some vocal) w/ Hemmige Srivatsan and Ramnad Raghavan accompanying. Must have been Wesleyan, I recognize that background I think...

Not sure who the sishya lending the pinn-paatu is...

Maheshram
Thank you for the above snippet. I have not heard Trichy Sankaran playing kanjira in a live concert . His solkattus is very much distinct , such flash of patterns for every cycle with no aural dissipation loss ever. Also first time seeing and hearing Ramnad Raghavan.

By any chance if you have any Trichy Sankaran recordings with some rare combinations like say TRS/Somu /SKR/Santhanam/KVN/Somu please share . I am assuming you may have few rare ones.
