Rajeshnat:

Thank you for posting that Hindu writeup by Sri V Subrahmanyam - very touching indeed. Mani Mama (as Sri Venkataraman was known in our family circle) excelled in both vocal music and VeeNa at the SwAti TiruNAL Academy. His older sister (R Subbalekshmi) was senior to him by a couple of years. After several years of tutelage under SSI, KSN and CSK, they were both advised by SSI to apply for jobs for teaching VeeNa at the Academy because:

a) their excellence in VeeNa playing matched the excellence in vocal music, placing them in a unique position to apply for openings in the VeeNa department.

b) There was a huge backlog of applications for jobs in the vocal department when compared to the VeeNa department.

Both siblings joined the Academy. However, Mama quit shortly thereafter to take up a job with AIR, and his sister continued to served at the Academy for 32 years. She is a performing 'A' grade artiste and her (VeeNa) recitals are featured regularly on AIR / DD (Podhigai).

The siblings imbibed the 'gAyaki' style from KSN and honed it further to create an almost unique bANi, thanks to years of intensive vocal music training under SSI and CSK.
