Through my journey

Ashwathi Thirunal Prince Rama Varma

Music – My Breath…!

Navarathri is a festival that has been celebrated with great pomp and
splendor in the State of Travancore for over 300 years now. The
festival is for and dedicated to the ‘Devi’ of the temple within the
Palace. Renowned musicians from all over the country would come and
give vocal performances and veena recitals during the festival. The
music festival itself was an offering to the Devi, a woman. Yet, women
were not allowed within the temple premises or the Mandapam. They
could just enjoy the music from far. That’s it!

The fact that women were not allowed to partake in the celebration for
the Devi, a woman intrigued the16-year-old buy who had just started
learning Carnatic music. Any answer he got from whoever was not
convincing. “That is the tradition” was all he got in response. And
the other thing he observed as a music enthusiast was that there were
only solo vocal performances or veena recitals, not even a violin
solo. He could not overlook these and move on. Even when he did not
get favorable support from within the family or outside, he had
decided to fight and change this tradition and make sure ‘the
inclusion of women’ both as singers and listeners happened in a
festival dedicated for a woman. Starting with the introduction of
Gottuvaadhyam, violin solos and persistent efforts for 22 years, his
dream came true eventually in 2006. Breaking a 300-year-old tradition,
women were allowed inside the Mandapamand the very first performance
by the Queen of Carnatic music from Trivandrum, Parassala, Smt.
Ponnammaalwas made possible!

This ‘he’ is none other than a descendant of two creative geniuses,
the creator of World famous, everlasting paintings Shri Raja Ravi
Varma and the creator of evergreen Carnatic and Hindustani
compositions, Maharaja Swathi Thirunnaal (who was also a contemporary
of the famous Trinity – Thyagaraja Swamy, MuthuswamyDikshitar and,
ShyamaShastry), the popular Vainika and Carnatic musician,
AshwathiThirunnaal Rama Varma, who, has dedicated his life for pure,
genuine Carnatic music.

Prince Rama Varma shares his musical journey …..

“Even though I changed some of the traditions in the Navarathri
festival, I do not organize the festival. It has been happening for a
few centuries now. Since the year 2000, I have been conducting the
Swathi Sangeethotsavamat the KuthiraMaliga Palace (the palace is full
of horse shaped wooden sculptures throughout the ceiling, hence the
name). And that is my baby, my family, my everything. Every year it is
held form the 4th of January until 13th January. I chose this time of
the year as the weather in Trivandrum is cooler and pleasant during
this time. But it is sad that in the recent years it has been hot all
through the year anyway! In the Navarathrifestival, there are certain
ground rules still followed. Only Hindus are allowed to participate.
Women are required to wear saree, the girls need to wear skirts and,
the men dhotis and no shirt. But in this event that I organize, people
are free to wear what is comfortable to them and all are welcome, no
restrictions whatsoever. People from all over the world are coming
now.

Music …it’s universal, present in all creatures and common to all,
beyond skin colors of black, white or brown and beyond religions of
Hindu, Islam, Christianity etc. I cannot accept that music belongs to
a certain group of people. The famous Hindustani singer, UstadGulam
Mustafa Khan sings in the festival. He lights the lamps in front of
the pictures of Shri Padmanabhaswamy and Maharaja Swathi Thirunnaal
without any hesitation and starts his concert. In general, for the
music festivals held in Chennai, the musicians send applications
requesting for an opportunity to perform. I am not in favor of that.
For this festival, I choose and go in person to invite the artists
myself. They may be ten or sixty in age as long as they are genuinely
talented. And regardless of who the performer is, whether they are
established or upcoming artists, the program time is always 6 PM to 9
PM. It would be the same time for both my guru Shri Balamurali Krishna
as well as a new comer. My only instruction is that they should sing
compositions of Maharaja Swathi Thirunnaal. It is common for most
musicians to sing the same songs over and over again. Even among
Swathi Thirunnaal compositions, people tend to sing ‘Deva
DevaKalaayami’, ‘Krupayapaalayashaure’.
‘Saarasaakshaparipaalayamaamayi’ etc. most of the time. My request to
the artists has been to include newer, less popular songs. It has got
good response and now 60-65% of the songs sung are new (less heard)
and fresh. With the permission of the artists, I also record the
performances and upload them on YouTube.com which can be found under
with the tag ‘Swathi Sangeethotsavam’.

Amma Maharani

My grandmother’s mother was Maharani Sethu Parvathi Bayi. She was a
woman with commendable administrative skills. She was called ‘Amma
Maharani’. She was very involved in music – apart from being a good
singer, she was a good Vainika too. She had such good knowledge of
music that even renowned musicians would hesitate to sing in front of
her. When SemmangudiSrinivasaIyer, one of the foremost singers would
sing and even if he made a mistake of one note, she would chide
“DeySrinivasa”. Many prominent musicians including Smt. M.S.
Subhalakshmi would come and sing at the Palace. Not justin music, she
was always very inquisitive and showed great eagerness in learning new
things. She used to amaze people with her ‘Thirst for knowledge’. I
still remember this - in the 1980s, when video games were introduced
and we used to be playing, she would come and ask us how it is played
and learn about it. She wanted to be abreast with Science and
Architecture. She had collected paper cuttings of ‘Dennis the Menace’
from the Illustrated Weekly – there were paper cuttings until a week
before she passed away.

Maharani Sethu Parvathi Bayi was the one who consolidated the Swathi
Thirunnaal compositions those were sprawled across certain Royal
families and the Mullamoodu brothers who were the NadaswaramVidwans at
the Shri Padmanabhaswami temple. She was the one who founded the
Swathi Thirunnaal College of Music. None in the generations after
Swathi Thirunnal had shown any interest in music. Maharani with her
commanding disposition had tried to force music upon but neither her
children nor grandchildren showed any interest to pursue music. I
think this must have been a great disappointment and made her feel
very sad.

I have listened to the Navarathri kacheris since childhood. My sister
who grew up very modern, was a fan of the Hindi film songs that came
out in the 70s and 80s which are now referred to as the golden hits.
Hence, I happened to listen to them a lot too and singers like Kishore
Kumar were very close to my heart. My dad loves music and he used to
travel extensively in particular the European countries. After every
trip he would bring music discs of Turkish, Iranian and Greek music.
This way I had been exposed to and listened to World music since I was
two years old. Hence, I do not see any discrimination in music. Any
sound pleasing to the ear is music to me. I have travelled a lot too
with my parents. In other countries, apart from grand concerts in
theatres, they also perform music in public places during Christmas
and New Year. When we visited places like London and Paris, I often
got to see street musicians play wonderful music. They were often
people from other countries performing Arabic, Turkish, Iranian and
Greek music. They played the very same notes that we played, its just
that due to unfortunate circumstances they were playing on the street
instead ofsabhas like we do. Typically, the passers by would leave
money on the sheet of cloth spread in front of them while performing.
But I would wait until they finished, hand over money in their hand
and sometimes, even take them out for coffee. That is how my interest
in music grew. Though I was extremely passionate about listening to
music, I never actually wanted to learn or sing. Now, I realize how
fortunate I was to have got the kind of exposure and opportunity I got
to be closely associated with music since birth. I am very thankful to
Amma Maharani, my dad and sister to have played a role in that.

Ho, Ho, Ho, Hoyyare!

In the early 80s, when Maharani was around 85 and in the last years of
her life, her desires had gradually reduced to just listening the
music she enjoyed and enjoying the food that she liked to eat. When I
was in my eighth standard, I joined the Christ Nagar school in
Trivandrum. It seems the Principal had announced that a boy from the
Palace was joining and that created news in the school! I came to know
that only later and the school music group teacher, Purushotthaman sir
assumed that I would be good at music as I was coming from the Royal
family and had enrolled me into the music group already. So, I sang
prayer song and National Anthem with the group.

Once, our group took part in the inter-district group music
competition and had won the State 2nd prize. When I showed that to my
great grandmother, Amma Maharani, she became extremely happy seeing
some interest in music blossom finally in the fourth generation! She
was always very fond of me and called me affectionately with pet names
like kunje, paapu, kutta etc. “What did you sing?” she asked with
excitement. I sang to her “Ho, ho, ho hoyyare …” She heard and told it
was good but if I learn Carnatic music, it would be even better.
Having nothing against learning Carnatic music I agreed without any
hesitation. It would have been about two months after this happened
when she called me and told me to be ready the next day morning to
commence music classes. My music journey thus started with Shri
VechoorHariharaSubramaniaIyer. I came to know thatMaharani had
interviewed several music teachers in Trivandrum and had chosen
Vechoor sir as my guru.

In those days, I was more interested in listening to music but the
music of M.D. Ramanathan or Kishore Kumar which I ardently listened to
seemed to have no relation to the ‘sari gama’ I was learning in class.
I was 12 then, when most other children who learnt Carnatic music were
already giving concerts. They had all started learning when they were
3 or 4 and I was just beginning to learn the basic lessons. Initially,
my guru hardly spoke. He would not even look up, would teach, finish
the lesson for the day and leave saying he would meet in the class
next day. His style of teaching, his involvement and sincerity
gradually got me hooked to the class. My guru and I shared a special
bond. When my guru’s son got a job transfer to Palakkad, he had asked
his dad also to move with him so they do not have to maintain homes in
two different places. And he convinced that his dad could find
students in Palakkad too and continue teaching there. Immediately, my
guru had denied saying “Then what will Raghu do?” (I am called Raghu
at home). In fact, I was only learning the basic lessons of Varnams
and Keerthanams then. Such was our relationship. Seeing my interest
and commitment, he stayed in Trivandrum until his last day. Though I
started with classes on Saturdays and Sundays, it gradually increased
by one more day at a time and finally all days of the week. I had not
skipped a class even due to my tenth standard exams. Even when my
exams were over and my friends went to watch the newly released James
Bond movie, ‘Never say never again’, I missed that and went to attend
music class instead. My guru’s eyes welled up and got very emotional
saying he has never seen such a committed student who has not missed
even a single class. During my college days, I would even bunk classes
to take music lessons at my guru’s house. I used to practice the whole
day. And after college, my guru would come to my house in the evening
for my regular class. VechoorHariharaSubramaniaIyer was
SemmangudiSrinivasaIyer’s student and I have a learned a lot of things
from my guru especially, the patience to teach. His first class
started at 7 in the morning and had classes continuously. At 4.30 in
the evening, he would come to my house. It would go on until 6. Some
days, when he was ready to leave, if I was in a mood to sing more, I
would ask if we could sing the ‘Sahana’ again. He would agree
immediately and the practice would go on for another hour! Now, as a
teacher I realize how physically difficult it is! He had nurtured his
voice too until the day before he died. From 1982, until the day
before he died (Nov 15th 1994), I learnt music from him. Had he been
alive today, I would have continued to learn until this day!

I never had the intension to give any stage performance then. But
always had the quest to learn more. The famous Mridangist, T.V.
Gopalakrishnan happened to hear me sing in the Palace and strongly
suggested I should give public performances. But my family hesitated
saying that the members of the Royal family never sang for others but
had only been patrons for others. I personally did not have any
reservations like that. I saw myself as a musician rather than a Royal
descendant. Then seeing this as an opportunity to showcase my talent
to the public as a musical legacy to Maharaja Swathi Thirunnaal, my
family decided to let me do one concert. Thus, my first concert
happened. In 1990. Some of those who listened to the concert that day
felt very elated and told I was a rebirth of the Maharaja but some
others felt I did not sound passionate enough and seemed like it was
just thrust upon by my family. I thought I had done well but if I
listen to the recording now, I feel ashamed and that I could have done
better.

Veena

Along with vocal music, I learned to play the veena too. Amma Maharani
had chosen Shri Venkatraman for that. I learned from him initially and
then from Shri K.S. Narayanaswamy later, who was M.S. Subhalakshmi’s
guru also. Since it’s difficult to carry the Veena and travel, I do
not do much Veena concerts. Venkatraman sir told used to come to our
house to teach Veena to my dad. After classes while he would lean on
his scooter and chew tobacco, I would chat with him about music and he
would share his experiences with other musicians. We have even chatted
for a couple of hours on some days. During Maharani’s time, it was
music all the time in our home. The family felt relieved when she
passed away! But now I have started again! I was 13 when she died. She
had given her old Veena asking that it be presented to me when I
turned 16. But nobody gave it to me saying I better learn to sing well
first. I got the Veena only after 5 years but, I had started learning
to play the Veena secretly even before that. Knowing to play an
instrument like the Veena or the Violin definitely helps a singer to
sing the swaras (notes) correctly.

The musical Blessing

After my first guru passed away, I felt a huge void. I was confused,
not knowing what to do next. After looking for a guru in several
places, joined as Balamurali sir’s student and learned from him for 18
years. I am more amazed by his talent as a composer than the singer. I
cannot express in words how valuable his contribution is to the
present-day music. He is from the Thyagaraja Swamy lineage and has
taught several songs that he had been composing since 1952. His music
as well as lyrics both have exceptional clarity be it his Carnatic
music concerts, Carnatic compositions or film music! Many say I follow
Balamurali sir seeing the clarity in my singing. That is only natural
– we imbibe and inherit certain qualities of our guru just like we
inherit certain traits form our parents. The biggest blessing from
Balamurali sir has been these words of his – “Rama Varma is my
favorite disciple. He sings with a proper understanding of my
compositions. I give nature’s blessings of music to the next
generation through Rama Varma”. I do not need a greater blessing than
this.

Importance of Saahityam (Words)

It is nice to see that a lot of people are eager to learn music now.
But they do not show the same eagerness in listening to music. Whether
you learn music to pursue as a career or hobby, just learning from a
guru will not suffice. Learning should not stop there but should
extenffurther and one listen to the stalwarts in music over the past
50 years in particular singers like Shri Madurai Mani Iyer and Shri
M.D. Ramanathan. This will help in understanding how they have sung-
each time, it will reveal a new idea, new learning. For example,
Madurai Mani Iyer was not even alive when I was born. 20 years back,
when there was no internet or YouTube, I used to look for people who
had recordings of Mani Iyer’sperfrmances, make a copy and listen to
them over and over. This is a way to learn what we like. This urge to
seek is lacking in most youngsters!

In any music, sangeetham and saahityam , in other words, music and
lyrics are both important. In our Carnatic music, raagaalaapana,
thaanam, swaram, having gained more importance with respect to proving
one’s talent, saahityam has not got its due importance. For e.g. most
musicians who are very familiar with aThyagaraja composition like
‘KsheeraSaagaraVibho’ may not know the meaningif asked. In the entire
song, the Saint complains to Rama that he has not heard the Saint and
helped the way he has come down ot help several of his other devotees.
The song lists each of such episodes and says ‘vinnaanuraa,
vinnanuraa’ meaning ‘I have heard’ after relating to each story. It
talks about an elephant King but if you had to describe who the
elephant King was, you need to know that according to the Puranas, it
was Indradhyumna who had turned into an elephant due to a curse but
later got salvation because of Shri Rama’s blessings. One needs to
understand the line by line meaning, the background and details.
Otherwise, there is the risk of presenting such a sober, song of plead
in an aggressive manner. And many do that mistake too.

I was fortunate enough to learn Saahityam with proper understanding
from my childhood. If we just try to understand what the great
composers have written itself, 90 percent of our job is done.

Balamurali sir had never gone to school. Shri M.D. Ramanathan was a
Malayali. In the 50s and 60s, when access to knowledge resources was
not so easy, they made an effort to understand the words, meaning and
the composer’s intent. Now, it is much easier to learn any language,
thanks to the internet.

There are people more talented than me in my family itself. But we all
have only 24 hours in a day. And it depends on the individual’s
priorities and the time one can dedicate. I have dedicated myself and
my time entirely to music. I make sure I practice with full focus. In
today’s world of mobile phones, I switch that off during practice else
the SMSs every minute could be a huge distraction.

Language for Integration

Some use language to divide people today. I personally feel language
is a beautiful thing. I may not know very fluent Tamil but I can
definitely communicate with a Tamil speaking person. Like music,
language should be used to bring people together. That is my wish.
Maharaja Swathi Thirunnaal, being in Kerala, even 200 years back has
learned and composed songs in Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Sanskrit,
Hindi and even BrajBhaasha. I am following the same tradition.

The rush that’s scary …

Overcoming many obstacles, people from all different sections of the
society now learn Carnatic music with great interest and help develop
Carnatic music at various different levels. While this is a very good
thing, it is sad to see that in this generation, musicians are in the
limelight only for a short period of time. The main reason is the mad
chase for success and achievement in a rush. Aspiring kids start
learning at 3 or 4, do kacheris at 12, participate in reality shows,
soon become play back singers, achieve name, fame and money, start
judging for reality shows and have done everything one could think of
by 30…this rush and chase scares me! Let us say average life
expectancy is 70 years. What do they do for the next 40 years if you
achieve everything by 30. The great Vidwans of yesteryears sang better
at 60 than they did at 50. ‘Parassala’ Ponnammaal teacher is 94. She
is able to express her music better now than she did when she was 70.
When you are asked what is the best age to display your highest
potential, “in ten years” should always be your answer. I feel in any
field, one should feel their best is yet to come and should always
strive to achieve their goal of where they would want to be in ten
more years.

Maharaja’s missing musical lineage

Unlike Saint Thyagaraja, Swathi Thirunnaal did not have a strong
‘Shishya Pramapara’(musical legacy). Since he was an administrator and
a ruling King, he may not have been able to travel. However, he did
invite Carnatic and Hindustani musicians from all over the country to
perform in his Kingdom and felicitated them. He has lived in this
world only for a short time – only 33 years. It is commendable what he
has achieved in both Art and Administration in that short time. I am
myself not interested in building a shishya parampara for myself or
starting a music school either. But I do give concerts, conduct
workshops and give lecture demonstrations all over the world. And I
continuously publish recordings of my workshops with the intension to
reach pure, chaste Carnatic music to more people. I do not teach the
already popular compositions like say ‘vaathaapiganapathim’. I teach
the rare compositions 99 percent of which cannot be learned through
any other source. My efforts have been to highlight the greatness of
the composer and to connect the learner or listener to the songs!

I do not know if music chose me or I chose music but my journey of
Life continues, dedicated to music forever!

Remembering Madurai Mani Iyer on his 50th death anniversary, with an article that Varma ji wrote ten years ago on June 8th, 2008.

I normally turn to music whenever my mind is agitated, tormented or
weakened. The music of Mozart and the songs of Kishore Kumar never
fail to help. In Carnatic music, it is normally M.D.Ramanathan that I
turn to. But when one is sad and one desperately needs doses of pure
unadulterated Joy, whom else can one think of but Madurai Mani Iyer?
Cherubic, gentle, lilting, innocent, joyful, buoyant and pure, the
very thought of the man brings a smile to one's heart. From the
tentative and endearing little "Madurai Mani sound" on Ga (Roughly but
not quite resembling the 'LEA" from the word "Learn"…..pronounced
correctly but rendered with a smile....almost as though the singer is
gently checking to see whether the Ga is still there in it's proper
place) before plunging delightfully into Vathapi, rather like a child
would, into a swimming pool for kids and splash joyfully around, till
the similar Madurai Mani sound on the upper Sa (A bit like "Uay" this
time.) before shooting off a breezy Pavamaana as the Mangalam, one is
transported into an enchanting world of light and joy for three hours
or so, the after effects of which continue to linger for a long long
time.
"Cute" isn't an adjective one would normally associate with one of the
Titans of Carnatic music.(A Sangeetha Kalanidhi too at that.) But
Madurai Mani Iyer was, among a host of other adjectives, Extremely
cute. And utterly disarming. From the way he sang syllables like
Tharana and La La La, vowels like Oooo and Oueee to phrases that
sounded almost like "I love you" at times during Raga Alapanas, to the
way he would spontaneously burst into song from time to time with
syllables like "Tatta tadaa" and "Tuttu Tuduu" when the violinist
played Thaanam, to the way he would joyfully repeat the same word with
little squiggles and charming variations at the end while doing
Neraval (Kapi Vaaridhi, Kaalinil Chilambu, Hithavu Maatalentho,
Chsaduvulanni, Raaga Thaala, Raja Raja Vara, Maanikkam Vairam, Paluku
Botini…..the list goes on and on), to the way he sang Swarams ending
with Ninni in Reethigowla which became Lilly at times, to the squeals
of delight whenever his accompanists played beautifully, virtually
Everything about him was cute. The sweetness that the man and his
music embodied inspired many to call him "Madhura" Mani Iyer. I
remember an old LP record of Mukesh with the title "That Old Feeling."
With Madurai Mani Iyer, it would be "That Joyful Feeling." Since my
Carnatic Music listening as a child was restricted mostly to those who
sang at the Navarathri Mandapam, Trivandrum and since Mani Iyer never
performed there, I had never heard him or even heard Of him till I was
late into my teens. Step One of the joyful event was attending a
concert by Shri T.V.Shankaranarayanan. The pep, verve and positive
energy Shankaranarayanan Sir imparted, blew me away and I became a fan
instantly. I would catch an afternoon train from Trivandrum to Cochin
to attend a TVS concert, accompanied by people like M.S.Gopalakrishnan
and Karaikudi Mani and come back by the midnight train. Those days, I
had no idea about his Guru cum Maama or his music. After someone told
me that TVS was the nephew and disciple of someone called Madurai Mani
Iyer, I started to search for his music and finally found the
delightful recording of his (With T.N.Krishnan and Vellore Ramabhadran
accompanying him …. brilliantly as they always did) containing songs
like Thathvamariya Tharamaa, Maa Janaki, Eppo Varuvaro, Saarasa Mukhi,
Nija Marmamulanu, the English Note and so on. And there was no looking
back. I have often heard the word "Heavy" being employed to indicate
something that is solid….and "Light" to indicate something frivolous.
But Madurai Mani Iyer's voice was "Light" in the most charming way
possible. (Luminous and effervescent would be two more apt
adjectives.) Even so called "Heavy" Ragas like Thodi, Bhairavi,
Asaveri and Varali resembled snowflakes falling gently, when handled
by Madurai Mani Iyer.
My beloved Guru, Shri K.S.Narayanaswami used to tell me that Swarams
should be sung with the same mindset with which one would shower
flower petals on an idol ….and not like one would fling stones at
someone or something. Madurai Mani Iyer sang Swarams like showering
flower petals, be it in the slow or fast tempo. Some schools of music
write Swaram singing off as mere "Spelling." But the way Mani Iyer
sang, never Ever sacrificing the proper Gamakams, aesthetics or a
perfect sense of proportion, Swaram singing was elevated to great
heights, be it in pentatonic ragas like Mohanam or Valachi, heavy
ragas like Thodi or Shankarabharanam, Hindusthani Ragas like Behag or
Sindhubhairavi or typically Carnatic Ragas like Durbar or Asaveri.
Like Swaram singing, his Viruththams too were a class apart. One feels
one could go on listening to him singing Viruththams till the end of
time. It is said that every single hair on the body of Shri Anjaneya
is soaked in Rama Naamam. Similarly when Mani Iyer sang a viruththam
(Or for that matter, anything at all), Each note would be a perfect
sample of that particular Raga. Ranjani, Hamsanandi, Kapi, you name
it. So much so that when he sang Hamsanandi, one felt that even the
Shadjam itself was a "Hamsanandi Sa." To my ears, violinists from the
time of Shri T.N.Krishnan, Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman and Shri
M.S.Gopalakrishnan seem to have done a more refined job of
accompanying the exquisite music of the maestro than the great masters
who preceded them. As did the melodious and uplifting band of
percussionists from the Pazhani Subramania Pillai school of
percussion. The way he played, especially during the Neravals of
Madurai Mani Iyer, was a celebration in itself.....accompaniment at
it's glorious best. When certain mridangam "accompunishments" sit and
make heavy, plodding "statements" by one's side, doing absolutely
nothing to aid the music, one is tempted to shout "Go listen to
Pazhani play with Madurai Mani Iyer and learn how and what to play!"
I I have always been drawn more to songs in Telugu, Sanskrit and
Kannada than ones in Tamil or Malayalam. But the Tamil songs by
composers like Papanasam Sivan, Gopalakrishna Bharathi and others
glowed like jewels and acquired a special Madurai Mani Iyer sheen when
he sang them. In fact many songs became more strongly identified as
Madurai Mani songs.... Eppo Varuvaro and Vellai Thaamarai Poovil for
instance….than as products of the people who composed them. The
Western Note "Gaa Ma Ma Ri Ga Pa" composed by Dr.Harikesanallur
Muthaiah Bhagavathar is actually called the "Madurai Mani Iyer Note."
I find it amazing that a man who passed away forty years ago, on June
8th 1968, a couple of months before I was born, happens to be one of
the most real, vibrant, palpable and special presences both in my life
as well as in the lives of thousands of others like me. With advances
in technology, more and more recordings of Mani Iyer's divine art are
becoming available on the internet, uploaded by kind souls with good
taste, in sites like sangeethapriya.org. One can easily presume that
whatever changes may happen in the music field, there would always be
an ever increasing family of Madurai Mani Iyer lovers, with joyful
music in their hearts, spread all over the world.

Varma ji's interview in Times of India about Onam.

1.What memories does Onam festivity bring to you?
My great grandmother, the indomitable Amma Maharani Sethu Parvathy Bayi was a formidable figure in my family. Despite having many of the traits that one would associate with a typical matriarch of a rich and powerful family, she also had a great amount of warmth, personal charisma and a great sense of fun.
For me, life at the palace can easily be divided into two : Until 1983, when she was alive and after she passed away. Her impact was there in every aspect of life and that includes Onam too.
The gardeners would bring fresh flowers and cow dung and we would enjoy our own clumsy attempts at making flower arrangements.
A huge big swing would be put up, just for the two weeks leading upto Onam and we would keep pleading with the elders not to take it down. We would cut pieces of paper, make our own kites and fly them. Many relatives would visit and it would really and truly be a festival in the best sense of the word, without even leaving the house. We would all be given new clothes, wrapped in yellow cloth. The older generation would regale us with stories from the Puranas, spiced up liberally with their own embellishments. Amma Maharani, several of her siblings, the siblings of my grandfather Col.G.V.Raja, Maharaja Sri Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma.....they were all extraordinary story tellers who would keep their listeners spellbound for hours together!

2.Who would you cherish spending Onam with? Culturally, is Onam the best time for family get-togethers?
Most honourable Malayalis come to Kerala for Onam. But I have been away during Onam time, during the past few years. It is the same this year too, when I have a concert at Bombay on the 25th of August.
I could say that I have been taking Onam to other places, rather than going to Kerala for Onam. There was an old film song, sung by the actor Kamal Hasan which went "Sundari Neeyum, Sundaran Jnaanum Chernnirunnal Thiruvonam" which means "If you (beautiful lady) and I (handsome man) sit close together, it is Onam." I do see the point and would add that when one does anything that one loves to do....for example, when I am all by myself in a cool, peaceful and silent room and I practice my veena undisturbed, it would be a celebration and hence, in that sense, "Onam" even without me being a Sundaran or having a Sundari sitting close to me.

3.The myths and legends of Onam – what kind of messages do they bring to you?
One of the most popular misconceptions among our myths, is the one pertaining to Maha Bali and Vamana.
The popular belief is that Maha Bali was an Asura king whom Lord Vishnu kicked all the way down to hell or Patala. In our Hindu belief system, we don't have just heaven, earth and hell, but Fourteen worlds or Lokas, of which six are above our world (Bhu Loka) and seven, below.
They are, from top to bottom, Satya Loka, Tapa Loka, Jana Loka, Mahar Loka, Svar Loka, Bhuvar Loka,
Bhu Loka, Atala Loka, Vitala Loka, Sutala Loka, Talatala Loka, Mahatala Loka, Rasatala Loka and finally Patala Loka.
Maha Bali who was the grandson of the legendary Prahlada, was a magnificent and extremely benevolent king. He was so amazing that Indra felt insecure about his position and went to Maha Vishnu to request Him to destroy Bali. Maha Vishnu, the wise and all knowing one, came to earth, not to destroy Bali but to save him. Save him from what? one might wonder.
Despite being perfect in every other way, Bali had started to develop a huge ego and Maha Vishnu knew that even the greatest could end up a sorry figure,if the ego is allowed to flourish unchecked.
So Maha Vishnu approached Bali, taking on the tiny form of the midget Vamana and asked him for a place to keep three footsteps. After Bali (who is called Maha Bali or the Great Bali, which got corrupted to Maveli in Malayalam) promised that he would oblige the resquest, Vamana grew and grew and became a gigantic figure.
A single footstep covered the entire earth. A second footstep covered the sky. Then Maha Bali, realizing who Vamana was, bent down and asked Him to use his head......completely bereft of ego now.....for the third step.
Vamana blessed him with his foot and escorted him to Sutala (and not Patala) and made him the ruler of the place, with full honours, which paints a picture that is drastically different from "kicking him down into Patala."
A large section of the general public seems to be unaware of this story and I got to learn this from my aunt Aswathi Thirunal Gouri Lakshmi Bayi who is an expert on Hindu mythology.
Since Maha Bali was so fond of his people and since he was a Chiranjeevi or an immortal, Maha Vishnu gave him permission to come back to Bhu Loka once every year, to check on his people.
Since we the people, don't want him to get depressed after coming to know about the sad state of affairs now, we celebrate Onam grandly, so that he would feel that life in general seems to go pretty much the same, joyful and festive way that it did, when He ruled the country.

Since the 1980s, audio cassettes and later, films and TV shows started to appear, spinning comedy around the figure of Mahabali. The homespun Malayali sense of humour can be extremely unique and pungent. Some traditional people who are aware of the greatness of Mahabali find this kind of comedy offensive.

I feel privileged to enjoy both the high level legend as well as the low level comedy in equal measure; not mixing the one with the other.

4.Onam is a very sensory festival for many – the sights, sounds, splendor of Onam are even pitched by the Tourism Marketing departments. Would you endorse this magnification of what was once a very personal, family experience?

For me, the spirit of Onam was what I described earlier. While there are obviously two sides to everything, I definitely preferred the old family Onam to the current, commercial Onam, where there are competitions for flower arrangements and the Thiruvathira Dance, which was so beautiful in it's original form because all the females......from ages two or three to eighty and ninety......would form a ring around a lamp and sing and dance together in a beautiful spirit of oneness and harmony.

5.From the tales you have heard from family, was Onam at the royal residence, say, a few decades ago very different from what it is today?

Yes it was, as I described earlier. Onam is an unforgettable event in both my life as well as my career too, for a different reason.
When I started to learn music from my wonderful Guru, Prof.Vechoor Hariharasubramania Iyer Sir, I was already in my teens. The music lessons would happen on Saturday and Sunday, which would be the two days when my friends would be free to go for movies and the like. Also, the basic lessons which just go Sa Ri, Sa Ri, Sa Ri Ga Ma ad infinitum, sounded totally different from the music that I would hear during concerts. So I had started to find the whole thing a bit boring.
When my Guru had to have a cataract operation in his eye, he said he wouldn't be able to teach me for a month. Once this time elapsed, I was very happy that music lessons had stopped and I never called him again! The others in the family also stopped asking about what had happened with the music lessons since by that time, Amma Maharani had passed away and the others weren't interested.
However.......every year, on Onam day, Maharaja Sri Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma would give all the people who were on the palace payroll, a new Dhoti (Mundu). My music Guru's name was still there in the payroll though he had stopped coming for several months at the time. He received an invitation for this honour and promptly turned up, which was a rude shock for me at the time!
Music lessons started again, but this time something clicked and I became addicted to music, which I continue to be even now, after all these decades.

6.As you are a musician, would melodies would you love to play on Onam?
As I mentioned earlier about the Kamal Hasan song....anything that celebrates joy, oneness and harmony is Onam for me and I aspire to create that during each and every one of my concerts and teaching sessions, not just for Onam.

7.Since you are known to be a foodie, tell us what a dream Onam spread would include.
The Onam Sadya or feast, is famous all over Kerala. But it does vary from place to place and people who are from Kozhikode or Palakkad might find the Sadya down South, not upto the mark, for example.
I personally like the combination of soaking my Boli (a soft, yellow pancakelike dessert) in Paal Paayasam (a milk and rice dessert) which seems to be a Thiruvananthapuram speciality.
I also like the fact that we finish the meal with buttermilk, rather than with something sweet.
The belief is that when we visit somebody's house for a meal, if we finish the meal with something savoury, they would have to come again for the sweet. And generally we invite only guests whom we would love to host again and again!

The best ever Teliyaleru Rama I have heard was by the Japanese Singer Takako Inoue in Tiruvaiyaaru. She was the fresh air that filled land that was otherwise suffocated by apaswarams that are typically on display during the afternoon sessions at Tiruvaiyaaru. Definitely there is more carnatic music in Tokyo than what we know of.
