The songs sung by AR avargal are really tough and he blends them with great care. A matured singing who has his own style of singing. At young age, such a wonderful voice, the voice is so matured and filled with lots of bavam. I heard he started learning music at the age 9. He also plays kanjira and mrindagam

IMP he is an artist who has all the vidwat that can be talked about in this field of Carnatic music. To me AR gives a great balance of Yester year Legends and artists who are going to become Legends. I just thought of making a play list for this artist on the videos i got from Youtube and hope to continue adding his videos from now on whenever i get links.

I was about to start a thread in his name and checking if any one has done so i got this thread and thought of adding my views. Surprising to see not many have registered their views. While preferences are always there for any one and every one, i am sure AR in days to come will have a large following.

Abhishek is indeed a very talented artist . I have heard atleast 6 concerts or so and there is always on spot manodharmam . For his young age , he has got such a manly voice and to that extent he is very very gifted. I remember 4 or 5 years back the very first time in SKGS sabhA , he sang a thillana in asaveri, I asked him whose composition it was he smiled and I later knew that it was his own where his mom helped him.

Having said the common crib about his music is his hindustani touch which at times is minimum sometimes it is very high for every carnatic rAgA. I have personally heard him sing mOhanam which sounded as bhupAli, and some time back in academy one other reviewer felt his madhyamavati also has a touch with brindavana sarangA. To an extent the rAga bhAvam contours are not maintained by him. Also he is not singing straight to the mike.

All said and done ,when he goes into a zone of excellence he is extremely impressive . I remember his nalinakAnthi (that alApanai) of his in bharath kalAchar it was superb, so many fresh and unheard saNgathis. Certainly a musician to watch out for years to come. Usually most of his alApanais have a very manodharmic piDi . Also his voice overlaps a lot with Dr BMK.

I have attended many live concerts of artists of different generations. I have never seen and experienced such energy and exuberance as i listened to Abhishek. He keeps the audience spell bound by his amazing virtuosity, laya sense and voice, and very original presentations whether it is raga alapana, nervals or swarams or tukadas.. He transports them - young and old- to a different world. and repeated standing ovations in a concert? Wow!! I have never seen this before in any concerts that I attended. Mind you, These are spontaneous responses.

watch this in the recent Jaya TV video

This is a loose statement. Injection of Hindustani idiom was tried and tested by the yesteryear greats such as SKR and Voleti. We the rasikas did not have the maturity/knowledge then to accept/appreciate this but now their music is of very high demand and there is a craving for their recordings. So by writing like this let us not change the focus of the readers on AR's music. Let us the rasikas now change (atleast) our attitude to accept good music!!!

Abhishek is born on 1985 , he is 27+.

You should read this nice write up of Thiruvananthapuram Hindu
http://www.hindu.com/fr/2009/11/27/stor ... 030200.htm

While music is in his blood for sure, he is certainly increasing rasikatvam in many rasika's blood.

CONGRATS, ABHISHEK!!!!
He sang last Sunday in BGS. He sang Suryamurte and Sarvam Brahmamayam very emotively.
He sang a brilliant Bilahari, full of bhava and melody and a wonderful raga alapana!
PS: Well, except for about 15 minutes when he climbed the speed/acrobatic horse at the niraval point "Garuda TurangaM"* :)And that was also tremendously enjoyable.
Accompaniment Charulata Ramanujam, Anantha R. Krishnan and Guruprasanna.

Thanks Rajesh!
Despite several doomsday predictions about classical music’s slow death hope is still not lost with youngsters such as Abhishek taking to the art full time and with quite a number of young listeners crowding sabhas. “Classical is the mother of all sound. It prepares you for every musical test and adventure. As for its future, it will live on through every changing time. After all swaras are life notes!”
can someone please tell me who are these doomsday soothsayers? Their idea seems worse than the Dec. 21 prediction.
I bet the rate of increase in Carnatic music concert goers FAR exceeds inflation rate, population growth rate and rate of increase in sales of banana chips and pickles in Ambika Depot.
See this to know what I mean: http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20713

With few known acquaintances that i know , the talk has not yet subsided about abhishek shanmughapriya in partha . I was not there in partha sabha, it looks abhi had a great season- I am feeling bad that I missed this particular shanmughapriya in partha. I am told alapana was nearly 30 minutes all by himself.

Oh what a beautiful Shanmugapriya that was. A blissful 30 minutes alapana followed by mamava karunaya (Swati Tirunal's kriti). All in all it was close to 1 hour 30 minutes (ragam, kriti, swarams and thaniavarthanam). In one work BEAUTIFUL !!

Abhishek sings this composition on rishabha swara beautifully. Watch Video.Akkarai Subhlakshmi for her spirited response and also for her appreciation to Abhishek's swarams. She seems to have immensely enjoyed Abhishek singing.https://youtu.be/ZaQhLgJLBCw

I wanted to be at this concert last friday. Suddenly it rained and got stuck in traffic. I wish i was there atleast to hear the pantuvarali with outside thunder and a rare devamanohari RTP. Great start abhishek, the hindu has given a good opening to the season with your review.

Ravi,
the interview went exactly as narrated...in that sequence. The panchabhoota idea was in my mind as soon as I thought of doing this interview (as I did't want to do a "routine" interview).

Following abhishek as early as 2001 /2002 timeframe and writing regularly for him , I feel Abhishek has few pluses and few significant minuses that he needs to correct. These are just my own accounts of viewing him as a rasika . Few may recollect as early as 2007 or 2008 i wrote then a pdf about music academy slots why Abhishek was not given an evening slot and not featured . Of course some time later he came in with his inaugral todi main and another hamsavinodhini pallavi in Dec 2010 or so at academy-evening and from then on , abhishek is a rock star . Having said in the last 3 years i dont like few things that abhishek is doing / not doing

+ Abhishek is genuinely helping fellow musician . For eg he helped KBMK few years back in presenting a brilliant pantuvarali i could also visually notice for many rounds he was not even singing and helping another PSN student. He is genuinely helping musicians like Sruti sagar and also keyboard sathya and giving them lime light . He trusts his music and i am guessing he is so focussed in music

- But of late there are many collaborations that he is doing where his musical talent is partially hidden or sabotaged . I have not been to any of his collaboration say with Bombay Jayashri ,Sivamani drummer, Shobana dance etc they all are not hinging on his core competency is my best guess. Also few whom i know who are big time fans of abhishek who went to these collaborations are getting vexed with Abhishek. Sometimes he gets into a group where he does orchestration with a bunch of kids is not where abhishek has to be.

Big - : What is exceedingly worrying me big time was his yesterdays concert at BGS .Despite BGS being free concert the audience count is only 80 percent and there was no rain. For his callibre he has to consistently compete with 2 of the greatest crowd pullers like say Sanjay and Raga sisters . I am assuming though many like his music especially those who are more conditioned and know bit more deeper throng to abhishek's carnatic music , he is hardly pushing in marketing himself for the newer rasikas and make them accept him . In 2010 to 2015 thanni kamichan abhishek for musicians like say TMK , Sanjay ,Aruna and Raga. Just look at his facebook hardly any strategy to pull in more fresh blood rasikas . I am assuming the writeup in the leading newspaper about him is not that much compared to others who are pushed to more limelight .

Big - He has to push himself and start say a nannum thamizhum series like sanjay or a live facebook video like Raga sisters video to bring in more share of young/old first time rasikas . My wife and my kid know about raga and sanjay they may make a debut for season this year and very likely they may hit raga or aruna or sanjay or trichurbrothers . They donot even know Abhishek . I am thoroughly convinced atleast in India my generation is not replenishing enough rasikas like my father and my grandfather generation . But with social marketing with his relatively young age and with some phenomenal backing like his cousin anantha krishnan, he has to finish far higher and continue to challenge sanjay and raga .

-- This may seem bit far fetched for many. About 8 years back there was a camp which got so challenged with Abhishek brilliance those years there was a series of interviews especially in The Hindu-NDTV and so many write ups to push ramakrishnanmurthy .This year it is appearing the newest dona is Sid Sriram who is getting pushed to possibly keep more distance and trip abhishek. I am not saying RKM is not a great singer and I dont even know how this latest dona sensation sid sriram is singing carnatic music .The point is if you achieve a certain high amount of success in early years then it is musician who has to shamelessly position and market himself/herself thru a gang of his/her social friends, write lovely reviews , keep it well guarded within your damn facebook and multiply your rasikas . Empirical count of rasikas is the key deciding factor for long term sustenance.Who knows behind him there are also some lovely well accepted musicians like say Trichur brothers who are also pushing with more count.

I am writing this not to challenge extraordinary well groomed musicians like sanjay, raga or relatively younger rkm or the new dona sensation Sid Sriram . I feel this year 2019 we are like in the year 1940 to 1950. GNB was perhaps the biggest rage then in 1940 we have amidst all musicians Abhishek who needs to steer himself to a much higher acceptance status like GNB. When I started in my teens i and many older rasikas had no clue on CM , We just went madly to hear maharajapuram santhanam, where his voice and melliflousness was the main criteria .

I wish abhishek belongs to the lineage of say GNB-Maharajapuram Santhanam -Abhishek but he has to concentrate on marketing himself , and may be spend bit more money to do marketing. He is successful and he can throw money,he had to do internet marketing .The bhavayami abhishek raghuramam, racy malavi and the slower sahana that he sang yesterday is a lovely testimony of what his musical mind can do , but it has to be marketed more. Abhishek is my second favourite musician of the list of performing musicians as of today. I want more of this gen retirees and young college grads who are taking their firdt few steps to go his concert . That way they willt up their taste to understand what is actually carnatic music.

A rather long post which has no sensible content except that Abhishek is advised to market himself better.

Well, marketing oneself or making the music more commercial is a personal choice and should be left to the individual.

Keep it up Pramod, all your interviews are really great .THis will help each of the artist immensely to position and market their musical personality. You are doing a great job!!!
