Today, World Space Shruti played V. V. Sadagopan's songs by Ambujam Krishna (which were tuned by him). It happens to be his star birthday today.
I hear Shruti is going to air more of his music on his birthday on the 4th of February.

Ithink he should take the accolade for the most handsome singer of the past 100 years, followed by TNS,KASTURIRANGANetc.. in those days , every house which had a gramaphone, will surely have a plate(that was how a gramaphone record was called) of enta vedu gonthu. moreover this was sung by the girls of marriageable age for the BRIDE SEEING FUNCTION. Is it a fact that VVS in his last days, suddenly disappeared and never seen again even by his close relatives.

Yes, he did disappear, though not in his last days. He has not been seen for many years. The general feeling is that it was a spiritual calling--a few people seem to have spotted him in places like Banares and the Himalayas years ago...

V.V.Sadagopan fans:

I stumbled upon this concert by VV Sadagopan : http://www.sendspace.com/file/24mmmk

It was aired on AIR Tirunelveli (also aired from Tiruchi). May be in the Sixties or Early seventies?

I am sure this will make Arasi quite happy that all of us get to enjoy this treasure.

ragam_talam! That was a pleasant surprise! If only you can find kEgai vannat TOgai minna virittADum mayilE... in kalyANi from the same film!

CML,
You would know that the 'guruvin pudalvi' is Sundari Bai, also singing in her own voice as they all did in those days. Those who have seen and heard her in Vasan's Chandraleka would recognize that voice. Comedy was her forte. VVS was offered the lead in the film, but he decided to leave the cine world by then to begin a career in CM.

I had seen the movie when it was released in the early forties! News to me that Vasan offered the lead in Chandralekha to VVS. it would have transformed the movie into a grand musical since Radha is non-musical. VVS would have become a glorious singing star in competition with MKT and PUC!

Thank you Mohan. You helped out the dinosaur!
Jamuna was a baby when she came under the wings of her grandparents after the untimely death of her mother. Those were the heights of VVS's spiritual years and though she was very young at the time of his disappearance, his influence on her is immense. Though young, she is wise and is full of grace.

CML,
Wish I knew more! Since I have lived away from India for many years, the news came to me in bits. He was on his way to Chennai , traveling from Delhi. One of his daughters was getting engaged there. Old fans of his on the railway catering service said that they spoke to him at this Andhra Pradesh junction, the name of which I forget at the moment. When he did not arrive in Chennai, the family went in different directions to search for him. There were several reports: he got down from the train; went to a doctor. Was he sick? Did someone mug him because he was carrying cash and some jewelry for the occasion? Did he have amnesia? Or was it just that he decided at that moment to go on a spiritual quest? Where to? In the ensuing years, there were those who 'saw' him in the himalayas, here or there. Even my mother, when she went to VAraNAsi and GayA thought that she saw him from a distance (they were close) and that he spoke only in signs and was gone. Wishful thinking, perhaps. He would be ninety four now (we simply cannot think of him as not being with us). No, this is not denial. He had such a presence that to think of him as an absent person is hard--and that is what it is. He is one of those unforgettable people we come across only a few times in our lives, and I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with him as I was growing up...

I have no intention of opening old wounds. But VVS is an unforgettable CM Icon; one who would have become one of the greatest in CM in the 20th century. His disappearance vies with that of the Netaji's which appears to have been solved now. If he were alive after the episode it would be impossible for him to remain incognito because of his enormous talents. Nice to know you got to spend a lot of time with him during your childhood. Do share some of your fond memories through this forum...

mohan, thank you! That's a lovely rendition.

VVS's voice has that nice mix of GNB's 'ravai' and Musiri's 'softness'. And what saareeram!

I am sure he would have ruled the CM world if he had been around longer. I've heard from my elders that he was as much of a 'superstar' in his heydays as GNB was.

I think these are AIR concerts which he gave after he left the concert circuit and went to Delhi to teach at the university.
There is very little music from his short but dazzling career on the concert stage since the tape recorder boom came after that period. Teaching, research, editing the Music Journal and the Tyaga Bharati movement (music for children ) became his life after that.

Today I chanced upon a casette of VVSadagopan given by a friend long time back. Of the 5-6 songs, the quality of a couple of songs needs to be improved which I will do today. If rasikas are interested, I will upload the same. I do not remember the songs- they are all ragamalikas probably, Bharathiar's which I have never heard before. Then vIllinai otha is there. These are all 78 rpm records released in 50s- What a majestic music.

I think the Enta Veduko rendition is by Musiri Subramania Iyer and not VVS. The nasal, high pitch twang is unmistakably Musiri's patent!

That U tube version of Entavedu is certainly of VV Sadagopan. Not Musiri.

Hadn't seen this thread for some time!
Thanks CRama and VK.

pvs,
It IS VVS!

I've mentioned this before, but for those who wonder about the sweet voice accompanying him in villinai otta puruvam vaLaittanai---it is his sister, veteran vocalist Jayalakshmi Santhanam!
And guess what, when the song made a debut in his concerts, it was in an all Bharathi concert at Ettayapuram, and he let an amateur niece of his sing just that one song with him at the end of the concert. She also sang the invocation to an august audience of Bharathi lovers--scholars, writers and musicians. That one moment of glory was enough to last a whole life time ;)

Thanks, CRama and Arasi!
Just that the timbre of the voice in villinaiyotha (one of my most favourite renditions of any song, ever!) is different from the one in enta veduko. It could be my untrained ear...

In his later years,VVS grew a beard and with his graying beard, he looked like the poet,Tagore. He also was scholarly like him. Thanks for the songs.
