Featuring Madurai T N Seshagopalan in "Parvathi", Mysuru 197

Post by cpblog »

Dear Rasikas,

With Deepavalli at our doorsteps, we thought it was time to feature a 70's concert by the eminent Sangeeta Kalanidhi Vidwan Sri T N Seshagopalan from "Parvathi" in Mysuru . In this concert he is supported wonderfully by Vidwans Chalakudy Narayanaswamy, Tanjore Upendran and Sosale Sheshagiri Das.

Please enjoy and wishing you all happiness in music and in the lighting of the Lamps!

Venkatakailasam,

Thanks for a fantastic collection of articles on the eminence of the Vidwan!
"A Pink Floyd fan strays into a T. N. Seshagopalan concert and comes back converted". There couldn't have been a better caption to express the power of his music.

Thanks also for the wonderful clip on T. Chowdiah in Youtube (also mentioned in the forum on Chowdiah).

Looking at the photo appears as a review of TNS kathakalakshebham but reading the review appears more like a regular concert. Would love to hear that samaja varagamana that the reviewer has mentioned.

It was a concert held at Mylapore Fine Arts Club auditorium some 6 years ago. Sri M Chandrasekaran was the violinist. I don't think it was ever released as a DVD or CD.

Most likely, this concert too was sponsored by Mudhra.

A couple of days before the concert, the word leaked out that the raga chosen would either be Kapi or one major raga (whose name escapes me) which would have given great scope for elaboration. But TNS proved that, in a master's hands, there is nothing like a minor raga!

Indeed right Harimau - But I am not sure if he indeed sang for 3 full hours (even assuming there was a 30 mins tani).

There is this brief writeup of Saroja ramanujan - quoting verbatim below

saroja madam writes as below:

12-11-2006-Mudra- One raga one krthi concert-Naradaganasabha
The raga taken was Kapi and TNS sang the krthi 'inthasoukyamanine' of Thyagaraja.
THose who heard the concert that day was really fortunate because the kapi raga was 'KA API'raga, meaning something that could not be described in words."kapi" or "kopi" in sanskrit besides meaning something or someone also used to denote something wonderful that cannot be described in words. The kapi that day was so exquisite that to describe it in usual terms as a kumbakonam degree kapi etc will be a gross understatement!

'Inthasoukyamanine' was rendered with such skill and imagination that made the audience exclaim with Thyagaraja ;inthasukyamanine , entho emo evariki thelusuno.

Radha bhaskar
Can you clarify as to how long he sang without the tani the kapi one raga one krithi in that mudhra concert.Did he also sing any other varnam or vathapi before Kapi . I am still keeping my fingers crossed to know if TNS indeed sang for 3 hours - may be 2 hours inclusive of 20 mins tani is what I am assuming .Can you clarify please ?

Also is there a recording available for commercial purchase for the kapi - one raga one krithi . I adore TNS kapi -even when doing ragamaliga swaras there is usually a likely kapi burst which is just out of the world.

TNS has had 3 chances to sing one raga one krithi - todi, kambodhi and kApi. I vaguely recollet tns singing todi in mudhra when it was held in the hotel near valluvarkottam - before they moved to rkm school atleast 10 years back.Is that right also right radha - my memory is bit hazy?

Thanjavooran sir..

As regards, Listening and appreciation of Music…..
The rasikas or listeners, having yearning for classical music, crave for blissful moments to derive total satisfaction. They give time, take efforts and are committed to appreciation of music.
One has to first like to hear and appreciate music.. Appreciation, good support to music, is restricted here unfortunately, because of elitist leanings….and personal equations…..
A true rasika is one who has to give undivided attention, with no bias or distractions of any kind, to receive the music and experience…the bliss…..

It is rare to see rasikas like you and CRama..

VK Sir, Thanks for the themmangu song by TNS. I had not heard this earlier from any vocalist although I had heard it in flute and nadaswaram. TNS has sung it beautifully in his inimitable style.

Smt. Nithyashree has sung this in a commercial CD several years ago. IIRC, it's a composition of Sri HKMB, attesting to his versatility as a composer. I'd like to understand more about the setting of this temmAngu...obviously, sundaran sEr peNamaNi is mInAkshi - so, who is the narrator? Is it another woman who is confessing to mInAkshI that she's lost her heart to Siva (pari koDuttEn yen manadai)?

Kindly refer post 26 in this thread.

Can we have the link for the concert (TNS-LGJ) in which the raga Sankarabharanam is featured as mentioned
in the posting mentioned above and also the link for the RTP in suruti.

[Sri.TNS has given a number of memorable concerts in the late 1970s and the early 1980s
in which he is accompanied by Sri.LGJ on the violin.

Fortunately for us a few of them are availble in the public domain.
Nagpur concert (TNS-LGJ-Palghat R Raghu-G Harishnkar) in which Karaharapriya (pakkalanilapadi)
is the main raga and the swara kalpana contains a number of mind boggling mathematical permutations
and combinations with TNS in full form; and it is superfluous to say that Sri.LGJ played it all with absolute ease.
Another concert (TNS-LGJ) in which he has sung all Papanasam Sivan compositions with Varali being the main raga].

Thanks Mahesh and braindrain. That four houre+ concert was fabulous. But the files get opened in a disjointed manner (like present day TMK concerts). After the Dharmavathi kriti, the thani of Soundararajam is coming. Then comes the RTP alapanas- Bhairavi and Sindubhairavi- then comes Soundararajam. But the alapanas are awesome. It brought to mind two same RTP I heard those days- Once in Bombay and once in Chennai. In tahe slokam, for the phrase Navarasabharithaihi, TNS brings two rounds of Navarasas in 18 ragas. The raga rasas capsulated in just two words- King of manodharmam.

Thanks to the uploader.

There is one more concert TNS with HKVenkatram and Arjun Kumar in the YT. Wonderful concert. I attended that concert. It was in Malleswaram Venugopalaswamy temple in early 1990s. Five raga alapanas, RTP Kalyani. Main Adathu Asangathu with Neraval at Chinnamchiru padangal- Absolute bliss. Visit that.

Another one. The Minister sitting in the front is Vasant Sathe I&B Minsiter - so this must be between 1985 through 89 - thru Rajiv Gandhi as PM years.
I could see some faces I know - Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, Sujatha Srinivasan - who is now in Cleveland, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi.

Selva ganesh on the Kanjira I suppose.

It seems TNS himself is publishing these.

The youtube caption and title text says 12 hour Grand Vishnu Gananjali Concert - January 2001 of TNS. Did Mahavidwan TNS sing continously for 12 hours . Was anyone from our forum witness to this., any direct report , Where was this held?. Did TNS have some minimal grab of food . Assuming he may had a brief bio break. I recollect carnatica brothers did a 24 hour marathon some time much later in 2006 plus time frame

Mahavidwan singing with such verve todi alapana in that 12 hour marathon concert

Todi - Alapana with VV Ravi - Guruvayur Durai- TV Vasan

Asaveri - LekhanA with Delhi sundarrajan - Mannargudi easwaran - Neyveli Venkatesh

Dhyaname - Dhanyasi with MA Sundareswaran - Srimushnam RajaRao

Azhaga azhaga - suddhadhanyasi with S Varadarajan- B Harikumar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3RZCH8qnFk

Thirupalli yezhuchi- Bowli???? by Thondar Adi Podi Azhwar with Mullaivasal chandramouli-Neyveli Narayanan- BS Purushottaman. Personally having tears here, i am assuming TNS sir took this around early morning in his 12 hour concert.

TNS musically brilliant son TNS Krishna(who can also sing for 12 hours with such verve) is showing his extraordinary guru bhakthi . I wish i went on Jan 2001 to this concert, but on one told me  . Pranams to mahavidwan TNS with zero compromise despite the short :P 12 hour concert

In the 10 seconds from 09:18 to 09:27 seconds, there is a gentleman with spectacles seated in first row before neyveli narayanan. He briefly turns , is that TRS mama by any chance. Can some one confirm. Is the tunesmith of this also by TNS where he sings impromptu. Hearing azhwar numbers with sustained mrudangam then here and there small snippets is wonderful , thank you mahavidwan TNS sir , I am assuming the person in front row is the great mahavidwan TRS, what a miss . I would have traded to hear this concert and rather skipped my next 25 live concerts.

Check by seeing in full screen and confirm if that is TRS mama.

TN Seshagopalan @ Ayodhya Mantapam - Vaikunta Ekadasi Special On Jan 2001:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

O gosh I got a writeup of this himalayan 12 hour concert , just now by googling. The venue is ayodhya mantapam and the occassion is Vaikunta Ekadasi.
https://www.rediff.com/movies/2001/jan/09music.htm

TNS says"''It (programme) was an effort to revive the trend of giving long concerts as two-hour katcheris (musical programmes) have become the order of the day,'' said Seshagopalan, who has been a frontline Carnatic musician since the mid-1970s after being trained by a lesser-known guru, Ramanathapuram Sankarasivam."

You can see for yourself ayodhya mantapam in first few minute with the crowd.
TNS is singing his well known dikshitar krithi ranganayakam - nayaki -Muttuswami Deekshitar with VV Ravi- Guruvayoor Dorai - TV Vasan.

Also you can see TNS singing a radhE radhE govinda - namavali with the ayodhya mantapam crowd joining
TNS- S Varadarajan - B Harikumar - Vaikkom Gopalakrishnan. TNS is also playing harmonium.

I would love to get these kind of idea implemented in my lifetime few times. What i am saying all these years is what mahavidwan TNS says in the above quote. By any chance if any one was there , please write . Does any one recollect what was the RTP that was sung, any brief writeup on this is welcome . In every video song , just like thiruvvayaru aradhana seeing the next set of vidwans/vidushis waiting next to play as accompanist is joy to watch. What a great motivation from TNS and what great support from all fellow vidwans and vidushis in the stage .I could also spot few more vidwans and vidushis in the audience .

2001- I was in Mumbai and hence could not attend. But I had enough discussions about this programme with many of my friends and his disciples. Every body sat spell bound. At that time, whenever I come to Chennai, I used to meet TNS and had discussions. He has shared many of his recordings with me. I have also reciprocated. So I was repeatedly asking him for this recording. But he was telling that he will want to reach more people and working on that. He was discussing for releasing that commercially. But did not materialise. Many songs from this programme has been put on yt in the last 2-3 years. See his voice power, devotion and manodharmam, dedication. I think Jeer came in between for this programme. Amazing.

But how come you were not aware about this- being in Chennai.

Similarly, once in Bangalore Odukkathur Mutt, for a Gokulashtami, he sang for 12 hours- Evening 6 PM to next day morning 6 AM. I think it was bhajans. Those days, I was not interested in bhajans and hence I did not attend.
