SuryaprakAsh started with a brief alApana of reetigowlai, and this rAga never lets any one down more so with this brilliant quality krithi tharam Ah Ah with swara patterns in magisekaran makanE . A detailed valaci alapana unfolded and particularly to hear a neraval in navashakthi swaroopini in valaci was a very satisfying one.
The downpour started with two patterns of swaras which were very creative , having heard many of kannadagowlai and AndhOlikA of many musicians and even of his for quite a few times, this swara kalpana was kalpana at its best . The crowd lapped it up with lot of applause . Particularly I enjoyed Andolika patterns with some high speed 5th gear along with neyveli venkatesh fast running fingers was more like they would fall any time from cliff but they just managed to not to fall.
In between kannadagowlai and AndhOlikA, dhanyAsi was the vilambit and the krithi of shyama sastri was done very well. KalyAni a rAga as a main where there were few pockets of the docileness which I felt like bashing gave way to lot of GNB style brighas in alApana , the whole kalyAni was very well done. nijadasa varada krithi was a quick pass with more focus on neraval and swaras . The neraval was again gripping with venkatesh support but the swaras of kalyAni were simply superb , what a canvas of swara patterns in kalyAni with a lot of nishAdam piDIs.
After a lovely round of tani ,I was anticipating a pallavi , but it was a mega surprise to hear kApi nArayani for pallavi .kApi narayani the very first time I heard alApana was only with him about 7 or 8 years back.,In general in the last half century kapinaryanai has not been taken as alApana. To an extent I have to say all musicians are bit groping in the dark and suryaprakAsh alApana needed little more polish . TAnam in Kapinarayani was simply mesemerizing ,for about first 3 mins when there was no mridangam support I did not enjoy that much. but when Venkatesh joined it was pouring and I liked the second half immensely for the next 6 mins for its patterns.
Pallavi line was very good with trikAlam , his swara patterns were again noteworthy, particularly liked the kAnadA a lot and soorya when he sang I was not sure if it was hindOlam. Incidentally when he finished the swaras for soorya , he purposely ended the line with a phrase soorya sOdhari which gave perhaps the correct impetus for the violinist to return.
The concert ended well in tukkadas too . The viruththam especially in sahAna and a long sindhubhairavi ending with PD krithi was well received by audience. For me the mAye in taraNgini was the best pick .
The mridangist and vocalist ,both had extraordinary energy that bought so much of liveliness.Venkatesh has one of the fastest fingers .The contrast of young upcoming violinist was really well done.He showed his class with really superb returns in pallavi and kalyAni and really gave clean return in line with the manOdharmam of the artist . I felt especially in kalyAni it was bit too uphill and I liked his return. The violinist was bit shaky for the first few numbers. Adambakkam Shankar gave lovely support that too too with the rotation of venkatesh especially in kalyAni was noteworthy.Their tani was well done, overall the entire team clicked.
Few words about this sabha and Pozhichalur:
-----------------------------------------
Pozhichalur is closer to pallavaram on the runway path of the airport.Dear NRI's when you travel to India for season jump out of the plane as most of them hover very close to this sabhA.You can attend the concert and then collect the baggage from the airport

The acoustics is really superb and the ambience in particular is very good ,especially yesterday with breeze and rains both in and outside of the hall . The concert starts at 6 pm that gives that lovely 3 hour plus for every team. Dont miss this place, chennai is really growing well. Incidentally this sabha was started 8 years before and inaugurated by prof TRS , no wonder that is why k a l p a n a is the norm.
In short pushing the envelope of carnatic is always a noteworthy thing for artists. Kapinarayani as a pallavi and especially the combo of Suryaprakash and Venkatesh was really controlled aggression at its best and there was a distinct push in creativity. The spread of vageyakkaras was also noteworthy along with high shruthi sense for full 3 hours. Overall an excellent to outstanding concert for 3 + hours .
