How many ways are there to build up an Alapana in KaanaDa? What is the position of Ri in VaraLI? How do you get to listen and analyse these things with a good quality exposition and illustrative play back and forth?

Enjoy the weekend, here:

Great MLV music for the weekend. Download it for Rs 75/- from Sangeetha! I heard the album on 100.1FM radio this mmorning. It is vintage MLV, full of the creativity and repertoire we associate with her. Her rendering of Chaya Ranjani and the Kalyanagopalam song (she is an ORIGINAL) is simply beautiful.
Enjoy!

You need to use a desktop computer and go through their registration.
Caveat: The minimum amount is Rs 100 for net purchase and so you can add another album etc. I bought a lalgudi RTP Mohanam/Ranjani.
You will get a ZIP file download which is of quite decent quality!

Pardon the belated brunch serving. 100.1FM is broadcasting a brilliant concert of Malladi brothers from this album. What Kiravani, what excellent Mukhari!.... Bindumalini was rendered very well. Embar Kannan is so tuneful. Arjun Kumar on mridangam.

This is a fine concert of Amritha Murali that happened a couple of days ago and live cast by Parivadini. You can catch the videos archived here :
Amritha Murali for SAFE - Mukhari, Lalitha & Moha…: http://youtu.be/7AWPpM6k3GY
Look for other portions of the concert in related clips.

I really liked her voice and manodharma in this concert. Amritha seems to have got into a zone of melody, smoothness, and sedateness, all at once. Her Lalitha, Mohana, Mukhari are all very good.
I also read positive reviews of her two other concerts on this Friday. I think this vocalist Amritha Murali is doing really well! My best wishes to her.

Listen to this young maestro's sitar. It is haunting, mesmerising. Pandit Niladri Kumar (Born 1973, very active in classical, fusion and world music) has a very interesting career similar to our Mandolin Shrinivas!
http://bit.ly/1wM33u9
He plays an elaborate Raag Shree in two parts, which is a janya of our Kamavardhini. The album is titled Saanjh Sur.
Listen to the tabla join in during the gat.
Then there is the dhun in Bhairavi.

Here is a well recorded video from Bharat Sangeet Utsav. Kaushiki bravely copes with the Carnatic dynamic. She also sings a lovely solo Shuddh Sarang.
The tani avartanam is very nice.
The piece de resistance is the ageless wonder Balamurali Krishna. He sings his own Varnam and later a good Samaja Vara Gamana.
Enjoy!

A lovely lec-dem by Prasanna Venkataraman and team from sometime ago, on Bhairavi and Mukhari. Prasanna is lucid as he sings lines from many compositions to highlight the key idea in the lec-dem: "looking at swaras and scales, ragas may be similar, but looking at the musical personalities, they are very different".

Link to the video: http://bit.ly/14h8MAn

I was impressed. reading the assessment of his potential by senior vidwan K S Kalidas in Sruti:
has a mellowness and he sings at a respectable 2-kattai pitch. He is good in the laya department, but does not indulge too much in its intricacies at the cost of rakti. He has a large store of compositions, around four hundred. He is now concentrating on adding more kriti-s of Dikshitar to his repertoire.
This IIT M.Tech has perhaps switched to a full-time musical career by now. My best wishes.

Amrutha Venkatesh concert on You Tube:
http://bit.ly/1BMV04X

The Hindu review of this concert starts off like this:
If you have not heard her yet, I suggest you do. Her music is sensitive, soulful and full of life. It is mature too. The Mukhari alapana of Amrutha Venkatesh took me back to the music of N.C. Vasanthakokilam and Alathur Brothers. She is endowed with a golden voice which has a pleasing tonal quality, range, sruthi suddham and depth.
......
The main raga she took up was Kalyani. Her expansive elucidation was out of the ordinary. It had several infrequent and sweet sancharas and subtle harmonies. And, she was totally at ease, enjoying every sangathi herself.

Wow!! That is the highest praise indeed. Now I am a fan of the reviewer H. Ramakrishnan for invoking top notch references from the past!!

Thanks Sachi for the link. I just listened to the concert. Ramakrishnan is right, the alapana plus kanRin kuralai kEttu is indeed quite excellent. This is turning out to be an excellent concert overall with a great kalyani. Vasantha and Attana are so bouncy and delightful, if I may. She adds little extempore flourishes here and there even while singing the song which makes her renditions rather unique. I guess her well placed self-confidence in her ability allows for such things rather naturally than forced. Of course, such things shift to high gear during niraval which make her niravals quite interesting and extraordinary at times. Those who compare her to how she sang a few years back, consider them sunk cost. Set all that aside and join the ride. Kurai Onrum Illai. I am sure this horse is going places!

What a lovely compilation! Masterly singing by DK Jayaraman, enthusiastic accompaniment by Lalgudi and on the mridangam seems to be Umayalpuram. Thanks to 100.1FM AIR.
Many rare songs. A Telugu Daru by Dikshitar, a Tamil song by Subbaraya Shastri. .
A really rare song Sri Maha Balagiri Nivasini on our own Chamundi. In raga Saranga Malhar (cross between Brindavani and Gauri Manohari) by Muthiah Bhagavatar!

Not really. sAranga malhAr sounds neither like brindAvani nor gaurimanOhari.

Sir,
It's interesting that you don't think this raga reminds one of Gauri Manohari and Brindavani. To my ears it is unmistakable.

Carrying forward your listing, this is what I have:

sAranga mallAr
29 dhIra shankarAbharaNam janya
Aa: S R2 M1 P D2 N3 S
Av: S N3 D2 P M1 R2 S N3 S

Gauri Manohari
gowri manOhari (gowri vElAvali)
23 gowri manOhari mEla
Aa: S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N3 S
Av: S N3 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S
Brindavani
22 kharaharapriya janya
A: S R2 M1 P N3 S
Av: S N2 P M1 R2 S

Please listen again and come back.

I learnt this composition many years ago and I suppose it's possible that breaking it down to its constituent notes could make it sound like any rAga which has those note groupings. From that perspective, it was a mistake to refer to the ArOhaNa-avarOhaNa. Even though P D2 N3 S overlaps with gaurimanOhari, the treatment is completely different. In sAranga malhAr, the dhaivata isn't dwelt on the way it is in GM to bring forth the rAgA. Same goes for the putative consonance to brindAvani. The way N3 is oscillated there isn't found in SM. It might just be a matter of what phrases one's brain associates prominently with a rAgA that makes one think another rAga sounds like it. To me, GM truly shines in Ri Ga Ma - Ma Ga Ri phrases particularly long pauses at the madhyama that convey its gAmbhIrya. The complete absence of gAndhAra in SM means I would never instinctively associate it with GM. As for brindAvani, the Ni2 flavor immediately distinguishes it from SM
