Vidwan Bharat Sundar, a young, upcoming artist, gave an impressive concert for Nadasurabhi on Sunday, 15th January 2017. With a fine presentation of Begada Varnam, he moved on to a breezy song – Sri Madhurambike of Muthuswami Dikshitar in Kalyani. The neraval and swara prasthara at Kadamba kanana…were presented at an unimaginably high speed! The relaxed alapana of Nayaki, for Thyagaraja’s Kanukonu soukayamu was rendered with all soukyam. Dikshitar’s Sri Mathrubhootham in Kannada with swara for pallavi was an excellent treat. Srikantha nee in Bhavapriya (Thyagaraja) was presented well. Ritigoula raga alapana was sung in all its splendour with appropriate gamakas, followed by Thyagaraja’s Dwaitamu Sukhama. A well planned swara was followed by Tani avartanam. An RTP in Shanmukhapriya was executed very well with beautiful raga, masterly Thana and Pallavi – Neerajadala nayana – set to an intricate tisra rupaka talam in misra nadai. It was adorned further, with ragamalika swaras which Bharat Sundar handled with lot of ease and competence. With a Devaranama, ragamalika virutham and a popular Thillana of Muthiah Bhagavatar in Hamirkalyani, he closed the concert on a high note. Though the songs list mainly consisted of compositions of St. Thyagaraja and Muthguswamy Dikshitar, the choice of songs and ragas were good and well balanced.
Vidushi H.M Smith’s Violin support was highly admirable. She played the ragas very neatly and supported with full understanding. She was at her best while playing Thana. Vidwan Arjun Kumar on Mridangam, as usual, displayed his mastery, high understanding and maturity and Vidwan Ranganatha Chakravarthy also exhibited a high level of talent.
Bharat’s good rapport with the accompanying artists on the stage helped in making the concert a success! There was an overwhelming response to this concert and one could see the contentment on the faces of audience in the end!!
