Talent Promotion programme by HCL
Kasturi Srinivasan Hall, Music Academy, Chennai
20 Nov 2017
6-8 pm (Sruti 1.5 kattai - C*)

Vivek Moozhikulam-Vocal
N M Brahmadathan-Violin
Kishore Ramesh-Mridangam

HCL has been providing regular opportunities for talented young artists in music and dance. Programmes for carnatic music and dance are organised by the Corporate Sponsor at periodic intervals at the prestigious venue of the Music academy which is by no means a great motivation and recognition for the upcoming generation. Their banner carries quite an appropriate, meaningful byline: Expressions of the Mind...Celebrating Excellence in Performing Arts

The programme for this month was a vocal concert by Vivek Moozhikulam hailing from Kerala. A sishya of C R Vaidyanathan of the PSN lineage, Vivek is also pursuing M Phil in music and getting active in the concert circuit. Endowed with a good stage presence, he presented a well balanced concert.

1. Sahana- Varnam-Karunimpa
2. Abhogi-Nannubrovani-Tyagaraja - Aadi
3. Vasantha-Etladuni - Tyagaraja-Aadi
4. Dhanyasi- Mayuranaatham-Misrachapu-Dikshitar
5. Suddhasaveri-Kaalaharana-Rupaka- Tyagaraja
6. Kalyani-Nijadaasavarada-Aadi- Patnam Subramania Iyer (Main)
followed by Tani
7. Khamas-Tillana-Aadi-Lalgudi Jayaraman

The concert was brilliant from start to finish - thanks to the young brigade who performed with total involvement. Vivek’s selection of songs was quite good as it included a few rare items.

The Aabhogi kriti was provided with a few rounds of brisk kalpanaswaras. The Tyagaraja kriti in Vasantha has been virtually ‘out of circulation’ and it was sort of a welcome revival. The best item of the concert was however the Dhanyasi suite. Alaapana was comprehensive with all the prayogas and sancharas in place. Maayuranaatham - the celebrated composition of Dikshitar and a favourite of DKP- was sung with loyalty to the sahitya especially the madhyamakaala passages. Vivek’s welcome voice is another plus factor. Kalpanaswaras were adequate.

Brahmadathan on the violin (presently taking advanced lessons from Sangita Kalanidhi A Kanyakumari) possesses an excellent bowing technique and played quite supportively. His alapana returns were good and proportionate.

Kaalaharana was again a good selection in Suddhasaveri preceding the alapana for the main Kalyani. Nijadasa varada was rendered with a systematic neraval at Bhujagaadhipa sayana Bhumijaramana. Kalpanaswaras were well executed with a precise korvai.

It was after a very long time that I was coming across a true representative of the Karaikudi Mani Baani in Mridangam. Son of R Ramesh, himself a senior disciple of Guru Karaikudi, young Kishore played with azhuttham, verve and precision. His Tani for a take off at Mukkaal idam (Bhujagaadhipa sayana of the main song) was marked with the paddhati characteristic of the school. He is sure to make a distinguished mark in the field.

The concert was assertive of the belief that the future of Carnatic music is safe in the hands of the Genext!

Very nice of you to hear and report. HCL series is nice. There is one song eTlaa dorakitivO in vasanta that was magically presented by TRS , is the krithi etladuni a different one or is it the same?

Nice to hear three youngsters performing. best wishes to Vivek Moozhikulam ,N M Brahmadathan (another +1 performing sishya from AK )and Kishore Ramesh .

rajeshnat,
You're absolutely right. The kriti in vasanta is etladorakitivo.
