It used to be sung in Varamu (what is now called Varamu but was only called Hindolam earlier).

MS used to sing it in this raga and you can find it on YouTube.

We should stop calling that Malkauns raga Hindolam.

That original tune was so popular Papanasam Sivan wrote "Thunai Purindarul" to that tune.

But harimau, wasn't Neerajakshi Kamakshi and Govardhana Gireesham always in Malkauns-Hindolam? How/why was it that Tyagaraja's Hindolam was different from Deekshitar's Hindolam when it has been established by multiple musicologists that there was no seperate Tyagaraja school or Deekshitar school?

Brindamma used to sing "Samaja Vara Gamana" in Varamu.

So, it is entirely possible that Sri Thyagaraja never composed in Malkauns.

On the other hand, in the current discourse on things musical, someone may attribute the use of Varamu by M S Subbulakshmi and Brindamma to the oppressive Brahmin domination of Carnatic music that they encountered! :o

Hindolam has got a textual tradition, whereas Varamu does not.
Walajapet version of Samaja vara gamana and manauloni were only in Hindolam.
My reply is based on the understanding that Hindolam has suddha dhaivatham and kaisiki nishadam.

@Harimau,

IIRC, Brindamma learnt Samajavaragamana from Kancheepuram Nayana Pillai who had modified a ton of songs and de-vivadified them. The more pertinent questions to ask are
1) Did Veena Dhanammal have this song in her 'store'?
2) Do other schools sing Manasuloni and Samajavaragamana in Malkauns-Hindolam?
3) Who contributed to the change in the fundamental structure of the RaGa?

Not to question your comments -- as you are much more knowledgeable about music than I can hope to be -- but to add some information.

T V Sankaranarayanan (Madurai Mani Iyer-Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar lineage) sings "Manasuloni" in Varamu.

Brindamma (Kanchipuram Naina Pillai lineage) sang "Manasuloni" as well as "Samaja Vara Gamana" in Varamu.

Madurai Somu (Chittoor Subramania Pillai lineage) sang it in Varamu.

As did MS.

There may be others.

So there is considerable oral tradition behind Varamu.

RaGa (Ranjani-Gayathri) continue to sing abhangs in their concerts so I perceive no change to the fundamental structure of their concerts.

RaGa (Rahul Gandhi aka Pappu) is being advised by a host of people to tweet his comments on matters all and sundry. We will have to wait and see how effective this new approach is.

Many musicians sing manusuloni, only in Varamu. Smt Vedavalli sings in Hindolam.
Samaja vara gamana, majority sings in Hindolam.

Correct.

A Google search lead to a recording of "Manasuloni" by Nithyasri in Varamu. There was a reference also to Semmangudi singing the krithi in Varamu though I haven't heard him sing this Krithi.

The GNB school used only Hindolam-Malkauns for this krithi.

That leaves Musiri, Mudicondan, Alathur, Sattur, Manakkal, etc. let us leave it to some other eager-beavers to dig out recordings by these musicians to determine how prevalent Varamu was in the patantharam for this krithi.

Peace!

However, keeping all these discussions aside, I liked the concert on the whole. Great support by Sri Raghul on violin and Sri Vineeth and Sri Krishna on the perucussion.
