Margazhi Musings 2017

Post by sureshvv »

Listening to K.Gayathri at Hamsadvani for Margazhi Maha Utsavam.

Andavaney unnai nambinen in Shanmugapriya submain.
Saraguna palimpa for main.

Exemplary spontaneity & improvisational singing every moment of the concert. What makes live Carnatic music the immersive experience.

Concert ends with Suguna Purushottaman's Tillana in Simhanandana tala. Have not heard this before. Single avarta of tala for entire tillana.

Q/A session for the junior artistes also this year. 3 standard questions.

Adhisaya (by scope afforded) ragam?

Ananda (joyful) Composer?

Apoorva (by level of difficulty) Ragam?

Gayathri's responses:

1. Sahana
2. Deekshitar
3. Varali

Priya Sisters singing on theme "Ranga".

They mentioned the 5 pancha ranga kshetras. But compositions not available on all of them.

Started with Ranganathudey in Sowrashtram.

Paramadbhutha maina nee seva in khamas of Mysore Sadashiva Rao on the lord of Srirangam. Lost opportunity for neraval at killer line. May be because of khanda triputa.

Viruttam - pachai mamalai pol meni in ramapriya.with foray into mohanam

Koluvaithiva rangasayee of sri devalapalli krishna sastry, a dvi raga kriti popular in kuchipudi circles ( as announced). Swaras in both ragas. Checked if derivable thru graha bedham. Does not appear to be so.

Parimala Ranganatham in Hameer kalyani. Nice vilamba kala rendition.

Tidy todi alapana by Haripriya leading to... you got it!

Neraval at kaveri teeramulanu. Shanmugapriya finally getting her voice heard. Nice 2nd speed neraval from Haripriya generating spontaneous applause. Starting swaras with swarakshara at kaveRi. Nice exercise of singing the ri of Kaveri at all swarasthanas.

Sai Giridhar playing with his usual exuberance which this auditorium accommodates well. Abbreviated thani with Anirudh Athreya also joining in.

Viruttam - kondal vannanai in arabhi followed by Sri ranganatha guru sevai. May become bhajanai session now :D

Listened to the sisters about 2 decades ago for the 1st time where they got the attention of the audience in spite of their non traditional appearance. They still got it!!

Same venue. Dec 3rd.

Took a chance with Aruna Sairam. Bad idea!

Devolved into a Dushyant Sridhar program without the humor.

Left after 3 "songs".

was there @viewtopic.php?f=13&t=30233 wondering where are all the mylaporeans and the other assorted cm aficionados. Very poor turnout - mebbe 20 folks in the hall and there were about 20 - 30 on livestream. Inspite of that, they produced some wholesome music. what a shanmukhapriya doing very good justice to all the R,T & P elements of RTP. mOhanam, not a big fav of mine, sparkled too.

The fact that it was always going to be available on parivadini may have kept some people from attending the program.

Vignesh Easwar - same venue

Starting concert with a bang. Thodudaiya Seviyan thevaram followed by Purandaradasa kriti in varali (ille vaikunte) with a high energy neraval (at paravasudevane) and swaras stirring the audience to applaud spontaneously.

M.S.Ananthakrishnan & Praveen getting into the action with gusto.

Brief Hindolam alapans but with a different flavor (straight notes) and tailored for Neerajakshi Kamakshi.

A brisk Rama bhakthi samrajyam like a cruising locomotive bringing out the joy brimming in the kriti with some brisker swaras at the pallavi.

Now for a shankarabharanam alap. The chairs here are arranged with minimum leg room, even closer than in the economy section in an Indigo flight. Protesting may produce similar results, so I better stay quiet.

Sarojadala netri... Good choice!
Neraval & swaras at Sama gana vinodhini. Nicely done.
Excels in sarvalaghu making the entire audience dance to his tune. Must be quite a kick to see that from the stage.

Tanjore Praveen Kumar sounding very good. Amplification & Ebullience just right!

Taruni nyaan

Abhang "Maaze Mahe re Pandari" in Maand?

Q/A section:

1. Kambodhi
2. Thyagaraja
3. Scalar ragas like Shanmugapriya, Simhendramadhyamam, Subhapantuvarali

Bengali song

Hey govind hey gopal in Desh

Rock solid! Walks the beaten track well without faltering. Would be great if he goes out on a limb on occasion.

Sikkil G strides in ready to hit it out of the park. With L.Ramakrishnan & K.V.Prasad & someone on Sur Tarang.

Theme: Naan kanda Desikan (MMDD)

1. Ulagil nal vazhkayei nalum vendum in kokila (aka bhujangini - chakravakam sans panchamam)

Kalladha pergal ellam katru thelidhal vendum

swaras in pallavi

2. Ellam seivallavanaam, ellam arindavanaam in keeravani tisra adi

Exhaustive neraval at the pallavi line. The team is at the top of their game with some wonderful returns on the violin & the gait accentuated by KVP.

3. Bahudari alap

swaras at pallavi

4. Anbu kondu ennai aandarul angayarkanni in aarabhi

Composed after the phenomenal success of his movie Pattinathaar as thanksgiving

5. Todi, Thirumagaley nal param aruley, adi

Tuned by MMDD to debunk the prevailing wisdom that Tamil kritis are easy to sing. Has sangathis rivalling the trinity.

6. Thamarai pootha thadaagamadi in Hindustani Gandhari (sounds a bit like jonpuri) tuned by MMDD

7. Viruttam utraarai naan venden in sahana, punnagavarali

I expected that he would announce that he had not seen (kanda) Desikar at all as he was born ten years after Desikar's death and thus he would sing neighborhood mamas and mamis' compositions!

As part of the Q/A session, Sikkil G was asked if he would act in a movie as MMDD. He said he gladly would and listed the songs that he would include in such a movie. He also recognized Sanjay's efforts for bringing these compositions to the stage.

This program once again showed the immense contributions made by MMDD to the Carnatic world. If not a movie, a documentary or a TV series on this would be a great service to bring to the attention of people at large. May be Lalithram or Sriram Parashuram will take it up.

Harimau,
Thanks for not targeting just neighborhood mAmi composers this time. I see mAmA's are also being led to the firing line now!

Sureshvv,
A composer I admire a lot. To think I saw him often on my way to school in front of his house in a pondering mood! He had such kind eyes...tAmarai pUtha taDAgamaDi was played by AIR every now and then and I thought it was such a one of a kind song...

Sikkil G's appreciation for the lyrics and the sangathis was so telling. "Isai amudhinai kottudhu paar idhan aruge" he sang numerous times with endless variety each building over the previous, that it was most scintillating.

Same location

Sriranjani Santhanagopal with same team from Arkay last week. Chandrasekhars Sharma on ghatam. Two thamburas.

Soft strains of Suddha Danyasi wafting out of venue with strong aroma of coffee at 4.45pm.

Started with Subrahmanyena rakshitoham with a nice swaras session at venkateswara naama rupena.
Feel that softer mrdangam will really help by not overshadowing voice. Ananthakrishnan belting out some lilting swaras & matches her korvai.

Bilahari alap.

Ending in upper shadjam.Violinist didn't quite make the same clean ending :)

Ma mayuram meedhil Eri Va

Great composition & pallavi line sung with several variations, emphasizing different syllables. Great chittaswaram. This part will definitely be on TV.

Vivadhi alert! Neethimathi. Three in a row. Do we notice a theme? Should I go out on a limb & yell out Mohanakara Muthukumara :)?

Saravanabhava in pasupathipriya. Sung with a lot of verve & staccato aakarams showing off her voice prowess. Either the mrdangam volume has been turned down or they are really playing soft & non-intrusively.

Starts the kriti ever so softly in dialog mode with the audience. All the percussion embellishments happening at the end of the lyrics. Neraval at Senthil Maanagar Vazhum Devadhi Devaney. Fireworks starting to get set off all over.

Followed by Parimala Ranganatham with a wonderful swaras section. Ma-ma-ma in both hues abutting each other & Charumathy repeats it in her reply.

This was even better than the Arkay (not parivadini, if we are talking about the same) concert. Better sound balance, Thematic kriti selection, Sweeter delivery (if that is even possible. I saw that only on youtube). Hope this surfaces on youtube sometime in full.

Ragamalika swaras in bilahari (applause for kontini in bilahari), charumathy letting hair loose, amruthavahini (hint provided by singing the swaras for pallavi of T kriti), Kapi narayani,

Roaring applause for each raga.

Great thani by JV seamlessly sneaking in nadai variations like a speeding train switching tracks. I wrote GV & had to correct, thanks to the chikkena pidithu thiruvasagam :)
