G Ravikiran at MFAC - Dec 15th 2017

Post by pperumal »

Walked in when the varnam was almost complete.
A soulful concert - the Saveri alapana was the highpoint and the overall emotional appeal.
I admire artists like this - there is lot of 'truth' in their concerts.
Excellent mridangam and ganjira support lifted the concert to great levels.
A very well spent Margazhi morning!!!!!!!!

violin was by ms Ananthakrishnan (was mediocre - was trying to be too flamboyant I felt).
mridangam was by Mannargudi Eshwaran and Ganjira by BS Purushottaman.

list is:
1. navaragamaliga varnam
2. paripalayamam of swati tirunal (S at padmanabha)
3. Sreekanta neeyeda - bavapriya
4. narada guru swami - durbar (R,S)
5. parandhamavati - raga announced as dhamavathi
6. patti viduvaradu
7. Sree Rajagopala - R,N,S at "murari..."
left after an excellent tani avarthanam by the duo.

- PP.

dhAmavathi is the name for dharmavathi in the asampUrna mELam scheme, isn't it?

Yes, but the treatment of the rAga is also slightly different - the SangIta SampradAya pradarshini pAThAntara of the composition that I have heard Ravikiran render starts with pa-nI,,,-da which is not heard in dharmavati compositions.

Ravikiran did a whole concert on "Raganga Ragas" a few months ago at Raga Sudha, about all the variations in these ragas and with the intent of keeping their identity alive.

Perumal,
Thanks for the review. Yes, G.Ravikiran is a serious artiste and no wonder you find him to be one among the genuine musicians. Balancing two careers still, I guess...
