Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi Violin duet

Post by hnbhagavan »

Jan 8,2018 the curtains on Shankravati festival of Sri Rama Lalitha kala Mandira was brought down by a grand Violin duet by the eminent lalgudi Duo in the company of Praveen on Mridangam and Ghatam by G S Ramanujam.
Apart from the atana varnamof Lalgudi sir,Saraseer hAsana priyeE in nattai a composition of Puliyur Doreswamy Iyer ,Oorajoopu in Kannada gowla by Thyagaraja, the duo did an elaborate Madhyamavati Alapana followed by one of the Lalgudi Pancharathna Deva shri tapasthirthapura. The Alapana was played by Vijayalakshmi and so smooth it was.
The main Raga was Kambodi .After Raga elaboration by both in turns Composition of Thyagaraja on Srirangam deity O rangasayee was taken up.It was excellent presentation by the duo and there was time for brief tani by Praveen and GS Ramanujam.Praveen in particular played with smooth touch all thru.
RTP in Dharmavati was taken up with Sri Rama Jaya rama Jaya Rama as Pallavi.
I cannot describe RTP elaboration technically, but was indeed melodious.I could make out Sahana and Kadanakutooham in raga Malika.
Hope another knowledgeable Rasika will post further details.
The crowd was good to begin with but around 08:30 one could see exodus of people. But those who remained till the end were treated to Pristine music.

Bhagwan,
Had I come before the concert had started, I might have spotted you . Walked in as the varNa was ending.
The lively sarasIruhAsana priyE was very appealing. orajUpu jUcEdi nyAmA brought in the pathos, their pleading with RaghOttamA (they addressed him several times over).
MadhyamAvati, from AlApana to the end was absorbing. KAmbhOdi had clout, but I wish RangasAyi weren't the choice (a listener's choice it was). Have heard the kriti often of late. That's why.
Dharmavati was done justice by both artistes. An elaborate treatment of it to the end. Did I hear dhanyAsi, chenjuruTTi , bhAgeSri, S.bhairavi?
Two dEvara nAmAs followed--behAg, nAnEke baDavanu and then kApi? A familiar one, which I cannot recall now.
Pater's karNa ranjani tillAnA was indeed a treat to the ears...

Madam ,

I did not spot you as there was considerable crowd.I have observed gradual improvement in the crowd numbers and very heartening to see young people including Vaibhav Ramani.
I too personally feel that Rasikas should give liberty for the musicians to perform their Manodharma.
but Listeners of late has been encouraged by Chitra veena Ravi kiran and abhishek.
as you pointed out the tillana was indeed the icing on the cake.

Yes, Bhagwan. For a week day concert, it was full house. Lots of youngsters too :)
O ranga sAyi is a mighty kriti no doubt, and I have nothing against requests. Just that I had heard it quite a bit of late.
After-season week. Busy artistes are tired out. Still, it was a satisfying treat from them...

O Ranga sayee was sung by Sriranjani two months earlier at the request of Sri Krishnaprasad as it was dear to Smt. Neela. Could that be the reason now also?
