I missed the duo concert during the season and was longing to hear one. I felt happy when I saw the notice for this concert. The concert had a spright start with the rare varnam in Hamsavinodini, a composition of Lalgudi Krishnan himself. Happy to note that Krishnan is continuing the family legacy of enriching Carnatic music with profound creativity. The next song Ramabhakthi samrajyam was appended with a volley of swaras which had nice poruthams. The Sahana alapana by Vijayalakshmi was most sublime experience. The characteristic pidis of the ragam were handled with utmost sensitivity and care. The song is a new song and the swaras were also nicely crafted. The final avartanam by Vijayalakshmi with sancharams around mandra ri very eloquently reflected the karunarasam which is synonymous with the ragam. The next round by Krishnan successfully expressed the myriad facets of the ragam through his sojourn into the madhya and tara sthayis. The elaborate Thodi ragam by Vijayalakshmi was exquisite and the Swarajati is not usually rendered in the instrumental concert. Special thanks for taking up this song.

Ragam Nalinakanthi was played by Krishnan spreading a joyful ambience throughout and the swaras that followed were electrifying. Madhyamavathy ragam was played for most parts by Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi chipped in at appropriate junctures. The ragam was presented elaborately for 15 minutes developing the ragam on a step by step method exploring the innate beauty of the ragam in a scholarly manner. The kriti Ramakathasudha- a favourite of the Lalgudi school was rendered with fidelity to sahithyam, authentic sangatis and swaras were rendered at Bhama mani Janaki- sans any neraval. The entire concert did not have any neraval- the USP of the Lalgudi school. The post tani pieces were all rendered with poise and feel.

Neyveli Narayanan, the seasoned Mridangam artiste displayed the Umayalpuram bani very effectively. His patterns in Ramakathasudha were attractive and there was so much variety while accompanying for the swara portions. V.Suresh partnered with Narayanan with high energy and imagination and the 15 minutes tani received many rounds of applause.
An excellent concert for two and half hours.

No one slices and dices silence as well as the Lalgudi school and this was showcased in all its splendor.

The duo have a complementary style of playing - Krishnan with the hard vigorous edge and Viji with a softer rounded approach. This difference was more noticeable than ever before, especially in some of the alapanas where Krishnan took the lead (Nalinakanthi).
