Perhaps many were waiting for this concert. Well, the ‘mother-daughter’ combination did full justice to the mood and theme of the event held as part of the birth centenary of late Ramnad Krishnan (1918-1973). Needless to mention that his style is hailed as one of the greatest in Carnatic music, largely influenced by his Guru T Brinda.

The mood at the venue turned to be of an overall ‘reverential excitement’ when, at the beginning of the concert, Smt Nirmala Sundararajan announced that they would be rendering only those kritis learnt by them directly from Ramnad Krishnan many years ago. The master had been very systematic and even maintained a list of compositions which he wanted to teach them and followed it up meticulously!

The concert opened up with the Tyagaraja kriti Endukunirdaya with its invocative multiple charanas. A few rounds of Swara prastaras at the Pallavi completed the rendering. Inthakantey in Kannada- a favourite of the master-was the next. Varali was the ‘sub main’ with alapana by Smt. Subhashini Parthasarathy. Neraval and swaras were rendered at the charana passage -Saatileni maarakoti lavanyuni. However the charana beginning with Saagarasayanuni was not sung to save time. The Sriraga kriti of Syama sastri came in contrastingly before Sahana was taken up. Smt. Nirmala Sundararajan delineated an alapana with the characteristic pidis of the raga which was so special to Ramnad Krishnan.

Dikshitar’s Arunachalanatham (one of Panchabhuta kritis on the Lord of Tiruvannamalai) was rendered with due care of the magnificent sahitya passages. Tulasamma-was preceded by a sampradayic alalpana of Devagandhari by Smt Nirmala and the kriti was presented with devotion. The charana passage opening with Maruvaka Paarijaata Saroja notated around a stable Panchama note was rendered beautifully.

Alapana of Bhairavi for Tanayuni brova was executed peacefully by Smt Nirmala and shared by Subhashini for sancharas in the upper sthaayi. The rendering of this celebrated kriti was provided with several rounds of Neraval and kalpanaswaras at the charana segment Vatsamu venta with a take off at Arai idam of 2 kalai Aadi Taala.

Though the Tukkada session had a breezy start with the Tarangam GovardhanaGiri Dhaara, it traversed a weighty kshetrajnar Padam (Yala padareve) with its well known opening anupallavi passage featuring an upper gandhara requiring absolute control of the swara sthaana and the raga lakshanam. (Chitraveena Ravikiran often cites this as an example to explain the prowess of T Brinda).
The Padam in Saveri -Mutavathura- was unique. (Apart from Brinda-Mukta, I have listened to Smt R Vedavalli and Voleti Venkateswarlu singing this rare composition.)

The Javalis in Khamas and Kapi were bright and offered variety and contrast. Dhanasree was a surprise to me as I hadn’t come across Ramnad Krishnan’s rendering of this Swati Tillana. Bhajanaparula in Surati offered a classy finale to the concert.

The accompanists – known for their penchant for tradition- played their part quite well, never dominating the recital at any point. RKSK (violin) returned raga essays, neraval and swraprastaras with elan. Arunprakash, known for his ’hide and seek’ strokes in Mridangam played an unusual, bold sarvalaghu at the very start for Endukunirdaya! Purushothaman played solo passages in Kanjira ably. Their Tani was compact and enjoyable.

There was a good audience turnout for the concert. Sri. Ramamoorthy, son of the legendary Vidwan, graced the occasion with his enthusiastic presence. It was a highly satisfying concert for a discerning audience at a noble occasion.

The concert by the mother-daughter duo was quite engaging- rich in contents and presentation. An unhurried style marked by depth and vishranti. Even though both of them do perform singly, their duets are rare nowadays. It has got an old world charm. The song selections were good and the manodharmam elements were there, but never in excess. Anecdotes about Ramnad Krishnan were interesting. RKSK followed admirably. But Arun Prakash… well. Remembering one old proverb. “avan ivvalavu neram taniya thane vasichan”, when somebody asked the vocalist, why there was no tani avartanam. I felt that the Mridangam did not jel well with the vocalists style. B.S.Purushothaman was good.

CRama Sir - Heard this concert in YT this morning. One word - OUTSTANDING and a lovely write up. the short clips that is played of RK before the start of the concert actually sets the tone for the concert. The song that was played prior to start of this was lavanya rama - simply melts the heart the way RK renders it !! what a great artist !!
