Kalaimamani Dr. Narmada, Sri Vijay Ganesh and Sri Chandrasekhara Sharma enthrall Greensboro, NC rasikas

Post by minisantu »

Kalaimamani Dr. Narmada treated Greensboro rasikas with a splendid violin concert in the divine ambience of the Triad Hindu Temple on Fri. March 9. She was ably supported by Sri Vijay Ganesh on the mridangam and Sri Chandrasekhara Sharma on the ghaTam.
• She started the concert with a brisk navaragamalika varNam, ‘Valachi vacchi’.
• Rasikas enjoyed her resourceful anecdotes as she moved to the evergreen Hamsadhwani kriti, ‘Vaatapi Ganapathim’. The sankalpa swaras enthralled all.
• Tyagaraja's compassionate invocation to Lord Rama, 'MarugeLara, Oh Raghava' in Jayantashree was brimming with karuNa.
• 'Nee eRangayenil pugazhethu' in ATaana was played with brisk and strong strokes.
• A delightful and playful "Raghuvamsasudha' in Kathanakutoohalam had rasikas swaying their heads and tapping their feet in joy. The percussion accompaniments greatly enhanced this piece.
• The main treat was a thorough and soulful exposition of Shanmughapriya in the Ragam Taanam Pallavi. Anantha (infinite) musical bliss indeed as she traversed through Shanmughapriya, Sahana, HamsAnandi, NaaTakurinji and back. The praachena pallavi she played was "Kailasapathey, Pashupathey, Umapathey, Namostute". Sri Vijay Ganesh and Sri Chandrasekhara Sharma delighted in the taniavarthanam of mridangam and ghaTam respectively.
• An energetic Annamayya kriti, 'Brahmam okkaTTe' charmed rasikas. Splendid support by the percussionists.
• The enchanting raagamalika 'Theeratha ViLayaaTu pillai' was presented with all the mischief, glory and tease synonymous to Krishna.
• A Tulasidas bhajan in raag Behag was meditative.
• Rasika requests were aplenty. Dr. Narmada presented the chaste "JagatJanani' in raag RatipatipriyA.
• Another rasika request for NaLinakaanti was happily granted through the "MaNavyaaLakim" kriti.
Dr. Narmadha's pleasant exchanges about the Parur lineage and her interesting anecdotes that were soaked in her guru bhakti was so inspiring.
Deep gratitude to our Triad Hindu Temple and BoD for sponsoring the event; to Vijaya Sankaran for all her efforts in bringing world renowned artists to our temple; Sarmaji for audio/video support; to Drs. Balu and Meena for hosting the artists and to Mallika Srinivas for the sumptuous dinner.
All in all, a wholesome, enchanting concert that will be cherished by Triad rasikas for a very long time.

Thank you for that review!
sankalpa svara (had this vision of the svara preceded by gOtram and nakshatram) or kalpana svara? ;)

The aThAnA kRti should be nI irangAyenil pugalEdu. pugal = refuge/asylum; pugazh = fame....

Lol; thanks for the pointer on 'sankalpa swara'; I guess I spend too much time at our community temple.
Kalpana swara is what I meant it to be :)
