Looks like a great concert. I am an admirer of Sivan's songs.

Did they sing a capella? Or were there accompanying musicians?

I was at the venue till Sankarabharanam. A very good concert.
Many in the audience were hearing the Bhairavi kriti for the first time.
Earlier Sri Banvarilal purohit, Governor of Tamilnadu inaugurated this 128th birth anniversary celebrations of Papanasam Sivan.

the Bhairavi kriti of Sivan is a masterpiece, not so often sung. One of the compositions in Sanskrit by Sivan. It could be said this belongs to the stables of Pani school, sung fairly frequently by Pani and Voleti. Nedunuri has sung too. It is said MLV heard this kriti sung by Voleti and she learnt from him.

Malladi Suri Babu - Sri Vishwanatham - Bhairavi - Sivan
Did you know there are 2959 tracks in Sangeethapriya.org fetched by composer search "Papanasam Sivan"?

How many distinct compositions does that involve?

Sri Viswanatham Bhajeham- Bhairavi. It is one of the Sanskrit kritis of Papanasam Sivan. It is sung as the main piece in the LP record of Papanasam Sivan Kritis by Radha Jayalakshmi. It has got Madhyama kalam also. People will mistake this as a Deekshitar kriti.

Malladi Bros sang this as the main song in their concert in Mudhra a couple of years ago. Suryaprakash also sang this in a Radio concert.

Didn't count it. But a close correlation seems evident between popularity of his compositions and concert performances that get into Sangeethapriya. For example this Bhairavi song itself has been sung by many!

Off the bat it seems Papanasam Sivan's top three most popular songs would be
1. Kaa vaa vaa
2. Enna thavam
3. Karthikeya
