Adityanarayanan at Nada Inbam on 13th Dec 2018

Post by krishnan meenakshi »

Performance rating: 6.5/10

Pakkavadyams:

Violin: Sayee Rakshith
Mrudangam: K.H.Vineeth
Kanjeera: Sivaramakrishnan
Audience : No. > 50. Very appreciative audience.

Sampled Ragas:

1. Mohanam, Narasimha Agaccha, M Dikshidar- A, K
2. Yamunakalyani, Jambhoopathe, M Dikshidar- K
3. Begada, Lokavana, Thyagaraja- A, K, N
4. Behag, Nirupamana, Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar- A, K

Mohanam: Alapana was technical but lacked in aesthetics. Kriti lesser sung in concerts and rendition was very typical with usual sangathies on expected lines. Niraval and detailed Kalpanaswaram were missing despite the ragam’s endless scope.

Yamunakalyani: Though the performer cannot be blamed for his padantharam (TMK), the Kriti sounded obscure, thanks to absence of raga lakshanam. Mrudangist seemed to be uncomfortable with the dead pace of the Kriti while the audience simply dozed off. Jambookeshwarar was left high and dry in Sahara.

Begada: Alapana was slow paced, devoid of brisk sancharams except for a few Sa-Pa varja prayogam (R G M D R Ni D). Another rarely sung Kriti Lokavana was rendered flat but eloquently. Niraval at Anupallavi was rendered in 2 kalams, which ended with tedious niraval sancharam spanning 1.5 octaves followed by Thani.

Behag: Short, sweet and crisp Alapana was followed by Nirupamana Kriti in fast pace, pleasing to ears.

Comments:

Vocalist: Performer is endowed with a very suitable voice for Carnatic vocal. He may work more on manodharmam, which would enrich quality of Alapana and swara kalpanai. He may work on his voice at higher octaves (especially above Thara sthayi Ri). Shruti was amiss entirely in Begada including that of Mrudangam, which the mrudangist tuned only amidst Thani. Having a little kanakku in swarams would enrich the performance.

Violinist: Grace of the programme. Melodious and maintained shruti of the concert throughout and handled ragas tactfully- Begada alapanai needs special mention.

Mrudangist: He played to the thalam with nadham except a few areas in Begada where the Mrudangam went off shruti. Otherwise a good and sound accompaniment.

Kanjeera: Played his part well as an accompanist and played at par with Mrudangam.

Audience: Very appreciative of the talent of the young performer.

The reviewer does not intend to be harsh, however this being a clinical analysis (unlike general reviews seen in newspapers written by Rasikas) of the Kutcheri, the review seems to be more critical. Generally speaking, the Kutcheri was decent one, leaving the audience in expecting mood.
