Thoppur Sairam @ Arkay Rec. Aug 14, 2020 streamed Aug 26

Post by shankarank »

VV Srinavasa Rao - violin
Arjun Ganesh - Mridangam
Tiruchi Murali Ghatam

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd5vBsfvzTA

he provided a refreshing concert in a recorded setting with very interactive session with his co-artists.

Highlights:

Karaharapriya with rAmanI samAnamevaru, with an extensive rAgam and varAli and kA vA vA as main.

He did svaraprastaram in triSram and khaNDam. Finally, the korvai he structured it to be poruttam to pazhaNi malaiyuraiyum murgA,,, vA,,, eDuppu.

AkhilANDESvari in dvijAvanti was rendered with embellishments that Arjun highlighted in many instances.

A rare interlude of vivardhani - AbhimanamennaDU kalgura. This is a memory from KJY Cassetes for me.

VVS Rao provided a neat support.

Arjun and Murali provided a very supportive accompaniment.

Timeline: https://youtu.be/xd5vBsfvzTA?t=5771

Korvai was setup as geometric reduction for pUrvAnga and arithmetic progression for uttarAnga. Measured in 32 mAtra per Avarta setting.

Starting Phrase (pURvAnga) of each round stays same in all 3 round:

5*8 , 5*4 , 5*2 = 40+20+10 = 70.

Final phrase for each round was 3 times a varying pattern.

First round 9*2 thrice with two gaps of 4 + 4 = 18*3 + 2*8 = 70
Second round: 7*2 thrice with two gaps of 4 + 4 = 14*3 + 2*8 = 58
Third Round: 5*2 thrice with two gaps of 4 + 4 = 10*3 + 2*8 = 46

4+4 gap was chosen with the final gA,,, vA,,, in mind.

For third round one of the 10 in 10*3 is executed as pazhani malai(5) yuraiyum muru(5) - 10 to reach sAmam like muru || gA,,, vA,,,

The last gA,,, vA,,, is not counted as part of the kORvai's math - that is Sahityam that has fitting pattern (poruttam in tamizh) that sounds same as the gaps.

Totals for each round :

First : 70 + 70 = 140
Second: 70 + 58 = 128
Third : 70 + 46 = 116

Total = 384.

In terms of Avarta - 12 full Avartas = 12 *32 = 384.

kORvai spans 12 Avartas.

Nice concert. Thanks for sharing.

Liked the voice and presentation. During the kharaharapriya AlApana, he gave a short indication of the kriti :-) I like the voice modulations at different points. I would have liked a bit more time for mandra stAyi varALi!

Agree with shankaranak, the mrudangam accompaniment during "akhilANDEshvari" is notable, it is not only enhancing the vocal, there are other subtle variations as well, beautiful! Also loved the patterns in "kA vA vA".

PS: "rAma nI samAnamevaru" - The way MDR starts this kriti is something I love very much (Eg: https://youtu.be/FJgyltmRuSA?t=651). This concert made me listen to the MDDR versions once again!
