AMRITA MURALI IN ARKAY CONVENTION CENTRE- 9/12/2020

Post by CRama »

The concert of Amrita Murali was organised by Madhuradhwani and Carnatica in their December season concert series. Thanks to Arkay Ramakrishnan Sir for continuing his undaunted efforts despite the pandemic. Amrita was accompanied by Vittal Rangan on the violin, Arjun Ganesh on the Mridangam and Chandrasekhar Sarma on the Ghatam. List of songs.

• Gajavadana Beduve- Kedaram- PD (S)
• Biranavaralichi brovumu- Kalyani-SS (N,S)
• Nannu brovuneekintha tamasama- Abhogi-T (R)
• Sree Ramam Ravikulabdhisomam- Narayanagowla-MD (R,S)
• Vachamagocharame- Kaikavasi- T
• Kannaara kanden Verondrum ennaamale nindren- Saveri-GKB (R,N,S)
• Thani avartanam
• Saramaina- Behag-ST
• Kondal vannanai- Virutham- Yamunakalyani, Peelu, Chenjuruti,
• Kannanidam eduthu cholladi- Ragamalika- AK
• Tirupugazh

In the past five years or so, Amrita has carved her own space in the concert circle by offering flawless presentation with admirable voice throw, sruti sudham, pronunciation, bhavam, a good quotient of sowkhyam, and aesthetics given the top priority. Currently she is being honed by R.K.Sreeramkumar and that adds to the sheen in her music.

In this concert, after the opening obeisance to Lord Viinayaka in the ragam Kedaram, she directly embarked into ragam Kalyani. Though raga alapana was skipped, she compensated with her detailed neraval on the lines not usually heard by us. Yes the neraval was on the lines Purani Madhuravani shivuni rani gadaa and appended with liberal kalpana swara in two speeds.

Ragams Abhogi, Narayanagowla and Saveri were chosen for elaboration. All the ragams were handled revealing the minute nuances in the ragam through the characteristic pidis of the ragam. The alapana of ragam Narayanagowla deserves a special bale. Such an elaborate treatment with clear confinement to the contours of the ragam and not tresspassing into any allied ragam like Kedaragowla or Balahamsa is a tight rope walking. The kriti was rendered in the appropriate chowka kalam and sufficient bouts of kalpana swarams added beauty to the kriti.

The song in Saveri is a heavy weight one. A rare Gopalakrishna Bharathy’s song on Tiruvannamalai. Once I heard this song in Vani Mahal again sung by Amrita Murali only. Never heard from any other musician. This song resembles Dikshitar kriti in the description of the Lord and Ambal and the temple of Tiruvannamalai. Very long charanam. It was rendered well with neraval at the lines Annamalayanai Unnamulayudan Kannale kanden and elaborate swarams.

The virutham and other post thani songs revealed the devotional flavour admirably.

Vittal Rangan on the violin provided neat following and brought out the raga melodies eloquently and swara and neraval returns were succinct. Arjun Ganesh had the right volume and embellished the concert with his deft strokes and Chandrasekar Sarma proved his mettle throughout.

It was a very fulfilling concert for two hours twenty minutes. Link given below.

Thank you rajeshnat for the correction. Even I had the doubt of words of that Saveri kriti. Thanks.
