AISWARYA AND SOUNDARYA-CROSS CULTURAL RECITALS – FB EVENT

Post by CRama »

Vidushis. S. Aishwarya and S. Saundarya (daughters of our own Cienu) have for the first time performed Carnatic and Hindustani Vocal, Bharatanatyam, Carnatic and Western Violin, and Western Piano as part of the cross-culture concerts by SciArtsRUs which was webcast in fb on 26 June 2021. The sisters have emerged as a very popular duo performing vocal concerts. Their concerts are notable for their singing the MS repertoire which all fans of the iconic musician eagerly look forward to. But of late, they are singing many kritis which are out of the family repertoire which they have learnt from other Gurus as well. It may be mentioned that Aiswarya has learnt from her Grand Mother Smt Radha Viswanathana for nearly 18 years and also with Smt Jaumbu Kannan, a popular singer in Bangalore and Soundarya is learning from Smt. Neela Ramgopal Mami. This concert goes to prove their proficiency in other genres and mastery over various instruments. The details of the programme is given below.

• Carnatic Vocal- Vathapi- Hamsadhwani- Aiswarya and Soundarya.
• Hindustani vocal-Nuggi Baralu Ninna Nenapu-Abhogi Kanada-song by Dr.Veena Sulya tuned by Pandit Havaldar.
• Bharatanatyam- Jatiswaram in the ragam Rasikapriya composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman- Soundarya
• Mariveredikkeavvaro-Latangi- Veena by Aiswarya
• Baalam Gopaalam- Bhairavi- composed by Mysore Vasudevachar- Violin by Soundarya
• Western Violin Sonata Op5 No12 in D Minor by Soundarya
• Piano-Legend Beethoven’s Lustigand Traurig WoO54- by Soundarya.

Vathapi Ganapathim bhaje- a safe bet for the auspicious beginning of the programme. The song was rendered with full adherence to the accepted patantharam with its multitude of sangathis- I doubt whether one last sangathi was their own addition. It jelled well with the rest of the sangathis. Neraval on the lines Pranavaswaroopa and a cascade of kalpanaswarams with interesting koraippu made the whole affair very intense, enjoyable and aesthetically superior. The sisters introduced some novelty in the singing of swarams. At some places, their singing gave the effect of chord. And at some other places, Soundarya sang in a higher octave than Aiswarya which made the swaras very interesting and enjoyable. This is a novel pattern in the Carnatic idiom.

The Kannada song was rendered in a sober Abhogi Kanada which was melodious and much relishing. The sisters had their training in HM under Pandit Nagaraj Havaldar and Sri Omkarnath Havaldar.

Bharatanatyam is not new to M.S.family. Radha Viswanathan learned bharatanatyam under Vazhuvur Ramaiah Pillai and performed many programmes along with Kalki’s daughter Anandi with music support by none other than M.S.Amma. I also remember a photo series published in a Deepavali Malar half a century back where M.S did abhinaya for the song Malai pozhuthinile by Kalki. Soundarya is a disciple of Sumitra Nitin, who is a disciple of Rhadha (sister of Kumari Kamala) of the Vazhuvur school. Soundarya’s dance was much appealing with her grace and precise movements and postures to the Jatiswaram in Rasikapriya composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman. The makeup and costumes were pleasing to the eyes and the entire space was well utilised by her. I understand that the choreography is by Rhadha. The song by Radha Badri was very good.

M.S was also a trained Vainika and some of her veena renderings are in circulation and also in you tube. After getting trained in Veena from her mother Shanmugavadivoo, she took advanced training from Sangeetha Kalanidhi K.S.Narayanaswamy. Therefore not surprising that Aiswarya also got trained in Veena in the Karaikudi bani from Sri. Sankar Raman and Smt. B.Nagalakshmi. Her playing of Marivere dik evvaro in Latangi was perfect with its raga bhavam and monumental sangathis. The sahithya got neatly expressed in her playing. The brief swaras added weight to the exposition.

This programme is a showcase of the multi talented Soundarya. She is proving her mettle in vocal concerts, but she is also a trained violinist, under Sri.Viswajit Mattur, Hosahalli Subba Rao and Rudrapatnam Thyagarajan. The Bhairavi kriti- a rare one- Balam Gopalam was presented with perfection with neat portrayal of the thick and thin shades. It showed her dedication and the sadhana she had done on the violin. All the best Soundarya.

The next Western violin piece was melodious and pleasant on the ears. Saundarya gets trained under Master Profulla Mondal in the Western genre.

The piece in Piano was also very pleasing and enjoyable. Saundarya gets trained with Sri.Rishikesh Hari on the Piano.

A very enjoyable and well conceived programme. All the best to Aiswarya and Soundarya.
