People,
I have read so much about her but havent had a chance to listen to her music. If some of you can put some gems of hers (just like the marubalkas of SSI, Ma janaki of MMI etc ).

Also some ineteresting anecdotes and stories will also do :) just like the coolkarni put it in one of the thread about GH.

Thanks in advance.

After being treated to puris and bhaji at Siddheshwari Devi's home in Banaras, Ajji (Smt. Gangubai Hangal) expected to have some rice for the main course. The gracious hostess that she was, Siddheshwari Devi replied she would get the rice ready in 5 mins!! While narrating this incident, Ajji playfully asks "such mooch paanch minute mein banega" (will it really get cooked in 5 min)?

Just noticed this thread. I have so much to share about Gangubai-ji, having gotten to interact with her for two whole days while volunteering for SPICMACAY many years ago. She reminds me of DKP in many ways (timbre of voice, her humility, and for being another "pADu paTTammAL" -- see postscript)

Here's another article. Although this somewhat overlaps with the previous two from Hindu, I think it is very touching in parts:

http://music.calarts.edu/~bansuri/pages/gangubai.html

Here's a Bageshree rendered in her later years:

http://www.sangeethapriya.org/~asokan/H ... eshree.mp3

Here are some clips from Rajan Parrikar's SAWF articles:

Abhogi: http://www.sawf.org/audio/kanada/gangubai_abhogik.ram
Alhaiya Bilawal: http://www.sawf.org/audio/bilawal/gangu ... ilawal.ram

And here are some examples of her sense of humor, which I witnessed firsthand (I have retained the original Marathi and tried to provide a faithful translation):

1. When asked why her voice and her daughter Krishna's voice are so different (Gangubai's is way more masculine -- see Bageshree and Alhaiya Bilawal clips), she said:

"गंगूबाई गाते तेव्हा गगनाला पोचतं, कृष्णा गाते तेव्हा हृदयाला पोचतं"

(Gangubai's singing reaches the heavens, but Krishna's reaches the heart.)

2. When asked to speak at a function in the Taj Hotel, Mumbai, for Bhimsen Joshi's 75th birthday (around 1997, when she was around 85):

[Gangubai tries to stand up and reach the mike.]
Organizer: आपण बसून बोला (Please sit down and speak.)
Gangubai [now standing]: मी काय म्हातारी दिसते काय? (Do I look like an old woman?)

Regards,
Ganesh

PS: I believe Ariyakudi referred to DKP as pADu paTTammAL (She who struggled a lot, also a pun on DKP's name), because she worked hard on her music (by practicing each piece until it was perfect, etc.) However, IMO, since Gangubai struggled a lot in her earlier years (financially, caste and family problems -- see articles) this applies to her too.

Thanks for your anecdotes and uploads, gsriram.
'paDada pADu paTTum paTTAi miLirum pADagigaL' (Though they struggled, they 'shine like fine silk', these gAnEvAlIs-singers). Not an apt simile in english, but in tamizh, the play is on the words pADu and paTTu.
I have had the good fortune of meeting both women and in pATTu (music), both have reached the heights by their struggles, and while Pattamma is akin to a household goddess (gruha lakshmi), Gangubai wears her scars like a vIra (warrior) lakshmi. Both, inspiring...

I have three CDs by this mega super star
A91005 Maestro's Choice
MCD186 Bol re papiyara and
SM1501-2 The Voice of Tradition Tanpura grand daughter Anita, recorded in Delhi in 1991 (Is Anita Krishna Hangal's daughter?)

SM1501-2 is outstanding. It was issued by a German company Welt Music Wergo Spectrum in 1991; ragas Shuddha Kalyan, Abhogi and Basant. The recording quality is also outstanding. I bought it in London many years ago. It was quite expensive. Hope it is available cheaper in India.

Cool sir,
The kalavathi is simply fantastic.. She is attributed to have made the below remark.
"If a male musician is a Muslim, he becomes an Ustad. If he is a Hindu, he becomes a Pandit. But women like Kesarbai and Mogubai just remain Bais."

>>Dont have a Todi , but I have put up a Komal Rishabh Asavari - Between Herself and Bhimsen Joshi, this is one raga they have put a magnificent stamp of Sawai Gandharv that will remain unparallelled.<<

This komal rishabh asaveri- is it similar to our Malahari?

And why specifically "komal" ri ? Do they also have this R1/R2 confusion as we have in our Asaveri?

A quote from the article
The rAga, Asavari, itself comes in three flavours, each distinguished by the manner of rishab use. They are, respectively, the shuddha rishab-only (R) Asavari, the komal rishab-only (r) Asavari, and the third type employing both r and R. The swaras of the R-only Asavari are aligned with the Asavari thAT proper whereas those of the r-only Asavari belong to the Bhairavi thAT.

Cool,
Thanks. It was like pages from her biography, as she matured with her music. You also included my favorite--which she sang years ago in a house concert and made me feel that she could sing it as no one else could--well, Bhimsen has, but hers has a stamp which is unique.
Haven't heard Rashid khan sing it :)
