Pt. Kumar Gandharva

Post by smala »

I could find several references within threads but none singly dedicated to this supreme maestro. If there is one missed, this may be merged.

Here is a Pandit Kumar Gandharva - post lung cancer - a voice with a struggle but an unforgettable rendition that twists your heart.

Kabir's Jhini Chadariya. A classic. Simple, austere and piercing.

He was affected with TB when he was at his peak performance period . He was advice not to sing and sent to a village in Rajastan for taking rest and there were no medicine for TB. (Great King has become pauper over night) during that time he listened to many folk singers singing Kabir bajans.
later the medicine were brought from UK and given to him . He recovered and came with big Bang. He gave a great status to Kabir Bajans by tuning into puccka Hindustani raga and popularised singing in concerts. Today Many sing Kabir Bajan as per the great Kumar gandharv way

Dear Rasikas,
There is an extraordinary documentary on the life and music of Kumar Gandharva:
http://www.kabirproject.org/the%20films ... unta%20hai
The movie captures how this prodigy became a young star, then a victim of TB, and how he later recreated himself in Devas, MP and turned to Kabir Nirguni bhajans inspired by street singers. This film is part of a project in Bangalore by Ms. Virmani. They have an online store also.

http://visionbooksindia.com/details.asp?isbn=8170944759

an extraordinary book on him .
from the blurb
It could be said without the slightest exaggeration that it was Kumar Gandharva who brought Bhakti Sangeet back into our music. Bhajan singing is not Bhakti singing, Kumar used to say. It is not the subject of God in the lyrics of the Bhajan that makes it into Bhakti Sangeet — but the man singing it.

One of the most bhAva-laden singers in the HM tradition, who sings with immense devotion and authenticity. Thanks to Cool and this forum for introducing me to his music.
