Sometime ago I was given this tape of two songs sung by Kesarbhai Kerkar by a friend in Sydney. There is a song in Malkauns (something like 'teri san meet') and one in Gaud Malhar. The first time I listened to the Mal Kauns, I was driving and had to stop the car on the side. The rendition brought tears to my eyes and I could not concentrate on the road. I get goose bumps every time I listen to this recording. Kerkar's emotional voice quality, her clarity and gamakas in the fast akara passages, the sruthi suddham....I could go on and on. Wonder if there are other recordings available ? (Coolji ?)

I am an attorney in New York, and I saw that you mentioned in a different post that you have a friend in New York whose family interacted with Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. My father learned under a student of the maestro, and I would be very interested in contacting your friend and hearing more of his stories about BGAK. I would be forever grateful if you could contact me at SomB1@yahoo.com.

Thanks in advance.

Dear Som
That story was part of a folklore, conveyed through another friend (not in NY).That circle is a very exclusive one and beyond the reach of humble folks like me.I Only manage to get some stories and rare recordings through those contacts.More through Email.

Thanks for the quick response! I will eagerly await your email. And there should be no exclusivity when it comes to music, especially the music of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. He would say that his music was for everybody...

Coolji,
thanks very much....that was a beautiful Kedar and an intriguing (for me) sampoorna kauns. Kerkar's richly gifted voice has that emotional quality that bowls me over every time. The akaras in Kedar were simply breathtaking, especially from the 19th minute...what a weight or gathra even in fast phrases !
I hadn't heard sampoorna kauns before - would need some repeated listening for me to appreciate the essense of that raga - at the moment it takes me from a malkauns to a 'varamu' equivalent to even shades of karaharapriya or bageshri !!

eagerly waiting for more tracks from this concert....

matterwaves,
will download Kishori Amonkar also over the weekend....thanks.

Jayanthashry,
in the sampoorna kauns track, Kerkar switches to pure malkauns towards the end where she renders the same song I was referring to earlier....

Hi Kanti,
This one on sangeethapriya is around 38 mins.I dont know of commericla release of this. The wordings of the vilambit cheez start with 'Tuma bin..' and dhrut reads like 'man sumirana karatu ram naam'. Im not sure whether this is of help(sorry for my poor knowledge of HM). I remember this is the same piece i have listened to on Rajan Parrikar's page

Concluding part after Sampoorna Malkauns
Nandagopal
Some Music which had survived in an agriculturists Home in a remote Village near Chigateri in Karnataka.
Please dont forget that we have a date.
To visit that place and meet a 80 year old gentleman called Mudenur Sangannanavar.

This is one of the Most briiliant bhajans one can hope to hear in a classical concert. One can see such a glorious mix of the styles of Omkarnath Thakur and Sunanda Patnaik.A style that brings the Temple atmosphere ,right onto the Concert Platform.
Believe me.It is a wonderful track.

K'ji: I've spent the last two days (and nights) trying to "get" Kesarbai's madhyam ka lagaav - what a brilliant rendition of kedar! As for visiting Mudennur Sri Sangannanavar, I'm game - the Amaravati Express from Howrah is so convenient to reach Hubli / Dharvad - maybe I can club it with a visit to Ajji's...
