Once I heard Mallikarjun Mansur's lecdem. He said all he from his guru was how to merge with the tanpura sruti and demonstrated it by singing shadja. One could not differentiate between the tanpura sound and his voice. so perfect was is preentation !

The Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur Award, an annual honour given to a Hindustani music teacher of eminence, was :) bestowed last year on the 94-year-old Pandit Datatreya Sadashiv Garud, who has been teaching music for nearly eight decades in Bangalore and in rural Karnataka http://www.indiatoday.digitaltoday.in/i ... ctionid=27

musicindiaonline has some great collections of mansur. Especially his masterpieces like shivmat bhairav, mindblowing Marva, a great deshkar and a superbly meditative bibhas.

Kji: it was wonderful listening to the AIR tribute - many thanks for sharing that recording with us. In the picture above, it almost seems as if he is reminding us about paying homage to the memory of his guru Athani Shivayogi and getting ready to sing Akkamahadevi’s vachana

"aralu gonda keyregey thorey banduhaayidanthey
baralu gonda sarigey maley suridanthaayithu noda
indanagey ihadasukha paradagathi nadeythu bandandaayithu noda
chennamallikaarjunaiya gurupaadava kandu dhanyalaadenu noda"

Knandago, thanks for the insights. I have tried almost all publications in Bengaluru but cant find nanna rasayaatre. Ankita folks have been telling me now for almost a year that Rajshekar Mansur has agreed to add a chapter to the book and will be available for print only then. Do you know of any bookshops where I could find it?

Coolji, great photograph.Blessed to see the pic on shivaratri!

Here is a link to an interview with his son Rajshekhar Mansur: http://india.tilos.hu/english_masur1.html
Has anyone heard Rajshekhar Mansur? He is keen on aprachalit ragas too. I am keen on getting hold of an album by him...

'Nanna Rasayatre' has been reprinted recently by Abhinava and is available.

English translation is bit different as Rajshekhar Manasooru has added his own bits.

Yes RM has rendered aprachalit ragas like Godhan Gouri, you can listen him to live every year in Dharwad during the birthday celebrations of his father.

Note: Most places the last name is written as Mansur like the north indian names, it should be Manasooru the place near Dharwad.

Varsha, lovely song, remember from my childhood. Here is a Kannada web-page:
Image

Rough translation for those who don't read Kannada:

Oh lord, (Shiva= The Lord of Kudala Sangama), by your grace
A dry stick of wood can sprout again
A barren cow can conceive and give milk
All poison can turn to nectar
All difficulties melt away, and every potential turn into reality!
