it is with great sorrow that I pay my respects to our dear friend, C Ashwath, a giant in the field of Kannada Light and folk music; a popular and amazingly creative music director for films, and a visionary who set up an institution for the teaching of this form of music.

Much can be written about him, and plenty of information can be found on him.

I admired him for his open and clear voice, unwavering sruti-suddham and a joie-de-vivre in his music - his compositions as well as his rendering of others' compositions.

Listen to his rendering of this favourite - 'Shraavana' - he was once a part of the amateur group that I have spoken of (who played the orchestra pieces) - and the group used to participate in singing these popular folk and light music pieces too. And this was our all-time favourite:

Farewell, Ashwath, we will all miss you at our gatherings.
