RE: Translation of a hindi song into english

Post by Rameet »

Hi,

Does anyone know the english translation to an old hindi song Sooraj ki garmi se jalte hue tan ko mil jaaye taruvar ki chhaaya It is sung by Sonu Nigam and is from the film Paranay. Id like to use it for my Arangetram but obviously neither my guru nor myself understand hindi at this level. Thank you for your help,

Rameet

From the net:

Aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai
(Bhatka hua mera mann tha koi
Mil na raha tha sahaara) - 2
Laheron se ladti hui naav ko - 2
Jaise mil na raha ho kinaara
Mil na raha ho kinaara
Us ladkhadaati hui naav ko jo
Kisi ne kinaara dikhaaya
Aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai
Aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai
Us par kadam main badhaaoon) - 2
(Phoolon mein khaaron mein patjhad bahaaron mein
Main na kabhi dagmagaaoon) - 2
Main na kabhi dagmagaaoon
(Paani ke pyaase ko taqdeer ne jaise
Jee bhar ke amrit pilaaya) - 2
Aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai
Aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai

Let me give it a start... Ravi and others can come in for help, corrections and additions....

Aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai
Main jab se sharan teri aaya, mere ram
O my rAma(mere ram)! my mind(man) has received(mila hai) the same(aisa hi) happiness(sukh) as that which is felt by a body(tan) when it catches hold of(mil jaye) a grand tree(taruvar) shade(chhaaya) after being roasted(jalte hue) in the heat(garmi) burning sun (suraj).

Here is the next verse:

bhaTkA hua merA man thA koi
mil na raha thA sahAra
laheron se laDti hui nAv ko
jaise mil na rahA ho kinArA
us laDkhaDAti hui nAv ko jo
kisi ne kinArA dikhAya
aisa hi sukh mere man ko mila hai
main jab se sharan teri AyA, mere rAm

My (merA) mind (man) was (thA) wandering aimlessly (bhaTkA), and I was not (na rahA thA) getting (mil) any (koi) support (sahArA) - I felt like (jaise) a boat (nAv ko) that is 'fighting' (laDti hui) futilely with the waves (laheron se) and is not able (na rahA) to get to (mil) the shore/its destination (kinArA). Now, when (jab) I (maine) sought (AyA) your (tEri) refuge (Saran) my (mere) rAm, my (merA) mind (man kO) expereinced (milA) the same (aise hi) bliss (sukh) that would be felt (jaise) by that floundering (laDkhaDAti hui) vessel (nAv) if someone (jo kisi ne) were to show/point out (dikhAyA) the shore (kinArA) to (kO) to it.

Ravi, very nice!

One small correction - the lyrics say "laDkhaDAti" which means unstable in hindi. the line means the same as what you have translated but just the small part which is not a fighting boat but an unstable boat... :)

My try (trying to follow Ravi) :) Corrections most welcome :

shItal bani Ag chandan kE jaisi
rAghav krupa hO jO tEri

(ujiyAli pUnam ki hO jAyE rAtein
jO thi amAvas andhEri) - 2
jO thi amAvas andhEri
yug yug sE pyAsi marubhumi nE jaisE
sAwan kA sandEs pAya
aisA hi sukh merE mann ko mila hai
main jab sE sharan tEri AyA, merE ram

My dear Lord Raghav (rAghav) if you so direct your mercy (krpa ho jO tEri ), just as (jaisE) fire (agni) can become (bani) cool (shItal) as (kE) sandalwood (chandan), just as the moonless nights (amavasya)[1] of pitch darkness (andhEri ) can turn into nights illuminated by the brightness (ujiyali) of the full moon ( pUrnima) [2], just as the parched desert lands (pyAsi marubhUmi), dry for eons (yug yug se), receive (pAya) with joy the news/message (sandEs) of benediction from the welcome monsoon rain (sAwan) [3], quenching its deep thirst, so too (aisa hi) a bliss (sukh) has entered my mind/heart/life ( merE mann kO mila hai) ever since (jab sE) I came to seek (AyA) refuge (sharan mE), with you (tEri), my dear Lord.

1. amAvsya - new moon (moonless)
2. pUrnima - full moon
3. sAwan - shrAvan - July-Aug monsoon

(jis rAh ki manzil tEra milan hO
us par kadam main badhAUn) - 2
(phOlon mein khAron mein patjhad bahAron mein
main na kabhi dagmagAUn) - 2
main na kabhi dagmagAUn
(pAni kE pyAsE ko taqdeer nE jaisE
jI bhar kE amrit pilAya) - 2
aisa hi sukh mere mann ko mila hai
main jab sE sharan tEri AyA, merE ram

Let my feet traverse progressively (kadam badhAUn) and stay steadfast on the path (rAh) that (jis) leads me to you, at all times, in seasons of spring (baharOn) when blossoms appear (phUlon mein) [1], in summer (kharOn mein) [2], in autumn (patjhad mein) [3] without ever (kabhi na) faltering on/straying from (dagmagAUn) [4] the path. Just as destiny (taqdeer) gave the boon of divine nectar (amrit) to drink to heart's content (jI bhar kE) to those thirsting for water (pani kE pyAse) so too (aisa hi), my dear Lord Ram, my heart (mere mann ko) has found (mila hai) bliss (sukh) ever since (jab sE) I (mein) came to seek (AyA) shelter (sharan) with you (tEri).

1. baharon, phUlon mein - spring, when everything blooms and blossoms
2. khAron mein - not sure about this -- summer, my guess
3. patjhad mein - patta jhadna is literally shedding leaves, autumn, when defoliage occurs
4. dagmagAna - literally is to tremble, to stagger. I have used it to fit the context and flow with the previous thought. Suggestions welcome.

The next one....

Sheetal bani aag chandan ke jaisi
Raaghav krupa ho jo teri
Ujiyaali poonam ki ho jaaye raatein
Jo thi amaavas andheri
O rAghava! if your(teri) mercy(krpA) is present(jo ho), then fire(Ag) becomes(banI) as cool(SItal) as(jaise) sandalwood(candan), the nights(rAtein) which were(jo thi)as dark(andheri) as amAvasya(amAvas) nights become(ho jAye) filled with the brightness(ujiyAlI) of pUrNimA(poonam)
amAvasya - dark moon night
pUrNimA - full moon night

Yug yug se pyaasi marubhumi ne jaise
Saawan ka sandes paaya
i have received the same bliss as that(jaise) of a desert(marubhUmi) which has received(pAyA) the news(sandes) of(kA) the rainy season(sAwan) after a long term thirst(pyAsI) of many aeons(yug yug se)

Krishnaa - 'floundering' is what I used for laDkhaDAti, because an unstable boat is one that flounders...it can also mean staggering helplessly... :)
