I am sure many of you have been exposed to the songs from the movie Ramanujan. I do not know much about the movie except that it is indeed based on the life story of our Srinivasa Ramanujan. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanujan_%28film%29 ). Music director is Sri. Ramesh Vinayakam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramesh_Vinayakam)
The more I listen to them the more I find newer things with them, there are quite a few layers. Also good use of trisram and misram etc.
Quite heavy use of Western Classical as background and interlude music but the vocals are quite Indian with a tinge of classical. 4 pieces are fully WCM pieces with no pretense of fusion etc. which actually works pretty well. I do not know how well it works in the movie.
They have made the MMI's English note into full fledged western classical music piece. Nick, I thought of you when listening to it. See if it has got 'stuff' when presented this way. I do not know if this is what is called 'theme and variations' but in a more colloquial sense of that it is relata-ble to CM folks since we know the theme very well and they keep coming back to it as refrain. ( this is the seventh item in the list, last but one )
This is the official play list. In the video area, you can click on individual songs to listen to them.
It is also available on Spotify and Raaga.
Music that is not orthodox Carnatic or Hindustani.
