I am extremely sorry to inform that noted hindi play back singer MahendraKapoor passed away on saturday . He was aged 74 ,leaves behind wife ,threedaughters and a son . Recently Maharashtra govt awarded him Lata Mangeshkar award for ifetime achievment. Though he was a meritorius great singer, he had to perform as a shadow OF MohdRafi. i remember his songsfrom Sambandh. he also sang some beautiful ghazals for OPNayyar in the film Jane Mehboob in the early nineties, which was never released . He had his own style of singing. May his soul rest in peace. gobilalitha

Yes, good job rshankar. I do not know a whole lot of Hindi songs but I knew those very well for their excellent melody especially 'calO ik bAr phir sE ajnabI ban jAy' and I did not even know the singer is Mahendra Kapoor until now. A melodious voice indeed. May his soul rest in peace!

And here's a writeup about him:

Mahendra Kapoor (born January 9, 1934) is an Indian playback singer.
Mahendra Kapoor was born in Amritsar, but soon moved to Mumbai. He was inspired by Mohammed Rafi and won the all-India singing competition early in his career. He sang many hit songs of yesteryears most notable being those for B.R. Chopra's Films (Dhool Ka Phool, Gumrah, Waqt, Hamraaz, Dhund etc.) and for actor/producer Manoj Kumar (Upkaar, Purab Aur Paschim etc.)
Mahendra Kapoor is well known in the Marathi movies for being the playback singer for Dada Kondke in all his movies. Inspite of being associated with Dada Kondke's colloquial style his singing for Marathi movies was not limited to Dada Kondke's movies only. His son Rohan Kapoor was an actor in a few films in the 1980s such as Yash Chopra's Faasle (1985) and Love 86 (1986).
Awards;
National Film Awards; * 1968 - National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for mere desh ki dharti song in the film Upkaar
Filmfare Awards; * 1963 Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for chalo ek bar phirse in Gumrah * 1967 Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for neele gagan ke tale in Hamraaz * 1974 Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for nahin nahin bus aur nahin in Roti Kapda Aur Makan.
Mahendra Kapoor was also awarded the Padmashri by the Government of India and Lata Mangeshkar Award by the Maharashtra Government.....

Mahendra Kapoor sang some captivating ghazals for OP NAYYAR in the film'Jaane Mehboob' inthe early nineties. But , unfortunately the film was never released. another excellent song is 'JOKE HAWAA SE ' BY Anuradha pAUDWAL. Most of theOP FANS HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THEM . I have a cassette of it , but not sure whether it can be posted, Another such film is ZID. Can any OPN fan like knanndgo , dr . Rao., r.shankar throw more light ? gobilalitha
