Srikris,
Kishore Kumar's birthday is coming up, Ravi had reminded us. Is this a good place to remember the singer and to listen to some of his songs if Coolji would share a few from his collection? Thanks.
Birthdays, Anniversaries of those not of the carnatic sort..
Aah !
Mention of Kishore conjures a thousand images ....
that utterly butterly prankster in chalti ka naam gadi....
the pan chewing musician in padosan ....
One of the best things I liked about Kishore Da was that he conveyed
such an wistful sense of pathos , unlike the one-foot-in-the-grave songs of mukesh.
no one else conveyed the aching heart as well as he did , and to know
that it came form a voice that could be one of the funniest too , made
the experience doubly enriching.
It also had a quality which had a dimension of time etched into it.
A father looking for his long lost family and Lo !with Tum Bin jaoon kahan ,
we in the audience would move freely in this dimension and go back 25 years in the story.
Who can forget those moments when the story came out alive as soon as
Kishore's voice broke out in Amar Prem, Safar , Hare Rama Hare Krishna,
Sharmelee, Heera Panna..
1973-80....
they were such wonderful years with RD Burman and Kishore at their peak.
Come Friday , and the full class would gather after lunch at one of the small elevated patches of greenery near the college.I can still hear the sounds of the hostelites running down the slope stopping near us only to catch breath and find out which of us locals would join them for the opening shows.
Only 6 of us would trudge wearliy to the classrooms knowing fully well that the college would be reverberating next day with the songs exploding on the screens.
Little surprise that whenever a song was sung by both Kishore and some other artist (like beqarara e dil , tum bin jaun kahan (rafi) and others ) Kishores version had a magical edge over the others.
here is a song not heard frequently (from mere apne) , but shows Kishores class.
