Hi All

I am looking for lyrics/video of Varnam (Bharatnatyam). I remember some words from this dance, which I learned about 10 years ago. It will be really helpful if someone can provide lyrics for the whole dance and also the video if possible.

The jati tht we started this dance with was

Ta hat tak nak jum tari kita nak

some of the other lines I remember are
Kallau avar manam, karind uru kaaro....

Nado updesham arunvaay shankaran...

and

ma umai naadnai??

I know its not a very clear information...but this is all i remember.
Thanks in Advance.

KSDD - give me some time - I will post a padArtha. Request to MODS: Can you change the title of this topic to 'nAthanai azhaittu vA sakhiyE - kAmbhOji varNam Bharatanatyam'? It will make future searches easier.

Please confirm.

Thanks,

Here you go:

The final caraNasAhityam is very involved to translate. I have tried my best. Corrections welcome.

pallavi
nAthanai azhaittu vA sakhiyE endan (svAmi)

Oh friend (sakhiyE)! Please bring (azhaittu vA) my (endan) Lord, murugan (svAminAthanai) [1] to me.

anupallavi
kAdalai arindavar kaNam pirivArO vEdanai tuyarinai nAn sahiyEnE kallO avar manam kanindurugAdO

Will someone who is cognizant (arindavar) of the pangs of love (kAdalai) consent to even a moment's (kaNam) separation (pirivArO) from me? I can not tolerate/bear (sahiyEnE) this distress (vEdanai) that is caused by the grief (tuyirinai) of separation. Is his (avar) heart (manam) made of stone (kallO)? Will it not soften (kanindu) and melt (urugAdO) in compassion for me?

muktAyi svara sAhityam
mAl marugan mahimai kUra taramA mA mayil mIdu varum murugan enum
mahIpanAm shivakumAranAr vegu punItanAr sukham aruLum

Do I have the competence (taramA) to talk about (kUra) the greatness (mahimai) of this nephew (marugan) of vishNu (mAl) who grants (aruLum) so much happiness (sukham)? He is supposedly a king (mahipanAm) named (ennum) murugan, who comes (varum) riding atop (mIdu) a mighty (mA) peacock (mayil)! This extremely (vegu) holy one (punitanAr) is the son (kumAranAr) of Siva.

caraNam
nAdopadEsham aruLvAi sundaran ariya

Oh handsome one (sundaran)! Please grant (aruLvAi) me the privilege of your unique (ariya) musical (nAda) instruction (upadESam).

caraNasvara sAhityam 1
mAdumai nAthanin kAdinil Odum

(Oh handsome one! Please grant me the privilege of the unique (ariya) musical (nAda) instruction) that you whispered (Odum) in the ear (kAdinil) of the husband (nAthanin) of the lady (mAdu), pArvati (umai) [1].

caraNasvara sAhityam 2
mA azhaguDaiyavan pugazhuDaiyavan guNamuDaiyavan Arumukhanavan

(Oh handsome one!) He is (avan) is the six (Aru)-faced (mukhan) one who is extremely (mA) handsome (azhaguDaiyavan), famous (pugazhuDaiyavan), and of sterling moral character (guNamuDaiyavan). (Please grant me the privilege of the unique (ariya) musical (nAda) instruction).

caraNasvara sAhityam 3
tAyin punita abhaya karamadil enaiyE IrAru karamuDan irangi varum murugEsan
maharAjan inbamuDan vandaruLa anbODu jAmam adanil azhagODu pughazhum
sa ri ga ma pa da nigamamum chatur maraigaLum muzhangiDa udavi
tarum punitamana isaiyum ezhiluDaya surangalum olittadoru pala vida
vachanam ena iyanga tigazhum bhAva rAga tAla gatigaLuDan
ADalODu pudiyadoru pADalODu magizhv(u)aDaiya

He is the handsome one (murugESan) who deigns to come (varum) to me (enaiyE) out of compassion (irangi) from the holy/divine (punita) hands (karamadil) of his mother (tAyin) with (uDan) twelve (IrAru = two times six) arms (karam). I want this lord (maharAjan) to come (vandu) to me with (uDan) love (anbu) and happiness (inbam) tonight (jAmam adanil) and bless (aruLa) me - with (Odu) beauty (azhagu), fame (pugazhum), the notes sa rig a ma pa dha and ni, to the intonation (muzhangiDa) of the ancient texts (nigamamum) and the four (catur) vEdas (maraigaLum), to the accompaniment (udavi tarum) [2] of holy (punitamAna) music (iSaiyum), graceful (ezhiluDaiya) notes (surangaLum), and as resounding (olittadoru) pronouncements (vacanam ena) of many (pala) types (vida) excel (iyanga) and shine, (please grant me the privilege of the unique (ariya) musical (nAda) instruction) so that I can experience (aDaiya) bliss (magizhvu) in a dance (ADal) that is replete with emotion (bhAva), melody (rAga), and the gaits (gatigaLoDu) of the various rhythms (tALa), along with/to the accompaniment (oDu) of this new (pudiyadoru) song (pADaloDu).

FOOTNOTES
[1] When muruga explains the essence of praNava to his father (sitting on his lap, and whispering into Siva's ear) - he is called svAminAthan, and this is the legend of svAmimalai
[2] udavi tarum literally means giving (tarum) help (udavi)
