Specific significance I am not aware, perhaps establishing the identity I guess.
Incidentally this may be the reason why Iyengar brides wear the kondai on the right and the Iyers if they do use it on the left on their weddings.
@rshankar: You mean the kondai is always worn on audience's right which is the dancer's left.
@ rasikaas: I dont think the kondais on meenakshi and andal are on different sides.

As far as i know, the feminine side has always been the left.(I am not sure why women sit in the right at wedding. maybe thats because its their day
) The sun, moon head jewellery worn by dancers, its made sure the moon is always the left. In ardhanarishwara, parvathy is always on the left. In mohiniattam, the kondai is always worn on the dancers left. So, technically all kondais are worn on the left. I think its just a goof up in other cases.
