#1 Mayam Edo Swami

Post by preyas » 14 May 2012, 18:53

The Pada Varnam I would respectfully like to request information is Mayam edo svami vadum shudum nanariyen by Papansam Sivan in Tamil - Mayamalavagaula Adi.

Two help requests

1. Can someone post the lyrics and the translation
2. Can someone guide me to where I could find the varnam - audio.

I have been unable to locate the varnam in any commercial recording.

Guidance and help are appreciated

C3: anai >> annai

C5: singAra >> shingAra

Good to see this here. I learnt this pada varnam in half, then my trainer taught me Varanamukhavane in Naattakurinji and i danced it in Kerala School Kalolsavam. I vaguely remember it as 'mAyam Eno swAmI' ...Not sure though

Preyas, here you go:

pallavi
mAyam EdO svAmi vAdum shUdum nAnariyEn
vaNNa mayilmEl tannam-tanimaiyil vandu mayakki maraindAi kandA (mAyam...)

What (Edo) is this deception/pretence (mAyam), my Lord (svAmI)? I am not conversant (ariyEn) with all this chicanery (SUdum) and pretend-quarrels (vAdum). Oh murugA (kandA), you came (vandu) atop (mEl) your beautiful/colorful (vaNNa) peacock (mayil), when I was alone/by myself (tannam tanimaiyil), and, after intoxicating (mayakki) me, you disappeared (maraindAi)

anupallavi
OyAp-pirivAm nOyait-tAikkum oLittu uLLam uruginEnE
O murugA oru peN pAvam unnai lEsil viDAdu guhA uLLamirangu

I have allowed my heart (uLLam) to melt/churn (uruginEnE) from the unceasing (OyA) pangs/affliction/sickness (nOyai) of separation (pirivAm) that I have kept hidden (oLittu) even from my mother (tAikkum). Oh murugA! This sin of harassing a woman (oru peN pAvam) is not going to let go (viDAdu) of you (unnai) so easily (lEsil). Oh guhA, please let yourself feel some pity (for me) in your heart (uLLamirangu)!

ciTTasvara sAhityam
unadu karuNai shiridillai yenil paravumiv-vulagum migavum bhayankaram allavO
dhanamum meyyazhagum ponnaNi paNigaLum irundoru payanum uLadO nI idai ariyAyO

Your (unadu) compassion (karuNai) is not (illai) small (Siridu) (by any means), and yet (yenil), isn't (allavO) this (iv) expansive (paravum) world (ulagam) extremely (migavum) fearsome (bhayankaram)? Is there (uLadO) any (oru) benefit (payanum) from possessing (irundu) wealth (dhanamum), beauty of form (meyyazhagum), golden jewelry (ponnaNi), and silken garments (paNigaLum)? Don't you (nI) realize (ariyAyO) this (idai)?

caraNam

caraNa svara sAhityam 3
sakala ulaguyirkkum annai umaiyavaLukkum

caraNa svara sAhityam 4
kamalap-padam paNi meyyaDiyar tamakkaruL shei kumara guruparanE

Oh compassionate one (karuNAkaranE), the delighter (manOharanE) of two (iru) women (mAdar) named (enum) vaLLi and dEvasEnA (deivAnai)! Oh lord who mounts a peacock (mayil vAhananE), enchanter (mOhananE) of the universe (jagan), please allow your heart (uLLam) soften with mercy (kanindu), and shower your grace (aruLvAi) on me swiftly (viraindu)! Oh vanquisher (samhArA) of the demon sUrapadman (sUra), brave one (vIrA), handsome (SingAra), spear-wielder (vElA), son of Siva (SivabAlA), protector (paripAlA) of devotees (bhakta), virtuous one (SIlA) (my six-faced one…)
