Need meaning for Saraswati namostute by GNB

Post by anjali »

Here are the lyrics found on Karnatik.com. The pallavi and Anupallavi is almost understood. The last charanam needs some clarification.

pallavi

sarasvati namOstutE shAradE vidyApradE

anupallavi

kara dhrta vINA pustaka varamaNi mAlAlankrta

caraNam

narahari suta vidhi lAlita navamaNi yuta kambhugaLE
sura sEvita pada yugaLE sudhAkara samadhavaLE

Here is my attempt: Others can fix errors.

pallavi
sarasvati namOstutE shAradE vidyApradE

My salutations (namOstu) to you (tE), Oh sasrasvati, Oh SAradE, granter (pradE) of knowledge (vidyA).

anupallavi
kara dhrta vINA pustaka varamaNi mAlAlankrta (sarasvati namOstutE...)

(My salutations to sarasvati, SAradA, the granter of knowledge) who is adorned (alaMkRta) with a vINA, a book (pustaka), and a garland (mAlA) made of superlative (vara) gems (maNi) held (dhRta) in her hands (kara)

caraNam
narahari suta vidhi lAlita navamaNi yuta kambugaLE
sura sEvita pada yugaLE sudhAkara samadhavaLE (sarasvati namOstutE...)

(My salutations to sarasvati, SAradA, the granter of knowledge) , the consort/wife (lalita) of brahmA (vidhi), the son (suta) of vishNu/nRsimha (narahari), one with a conch-like (kambu) [1] neck (gaLE) that is adorned (yuta) with nine (nava) gems (maNi), one whose feet (pada yugaLE) [2] are worshiped (sEvita) by the gods (sura), who is equal (sama) to the moon (sudhAkara) [3] in fairness/whiteness (dhavaLE).

FOOTNOTES
[1] Please note that it is kambu and kambhu
[2] pada yugaLE - both feet
[3] The moon is supposed to be the repository of nectar (sudhA) that is distributed through the cool moonbeams

Ravi that was really beautiful.

Just a small correction -lAlita means one cherished or caressed by.
