A list of jati syllables

Post by SrinathK »

Can anyone give me a list of all the syllables you've heard being used for jatis?

I have dedicated one page in my notebook to these sollus that are used in Bharata Natyam .
Some examples ( I prefer to write longer phrases together instead of using single syllables ) :

Tat thei , dhi tei , didi thei ( nattuvangam patterns )
Tat tai ta ha , dhi tai ta ha ( one of the basic adavus )
Ta hata jam tari ta
Takajaka , takujeku
Takuna jakuna
Dinuta tadimi
Januta dim
Jakina takata
Din ginaku , dharingudu
Ta num , taka jom
Raka diku tungu nangu
Dimigina ta
Tam tadhi gina jaka

Drikutaka is an important repetitive combination , where the mridangist must make a corresponding faran . ( I don´t remember well , but maybe the dance must make a sideward movement together with these sollus )

These are not all I have in my vault , but I think it is representative .

Most jatis begin with something like 'taLAngu takadhimi taka tarikiTatOm' - a signal from the naTTuvanAr to the dancer to get ready for the jati that is to follow.

'driguDu taka driguDu taka' I are think the sollus used for backward movements - typically seen in the concluding portions of an alArippu, for example.

Other sollus used are kiNAngu jham
