B N Suresh was a child prodigy and none other than flute legend T R Mahalingam recognized his talent. The tonal quality of his flute and his ability to vocalise the lyrics on the flute gave an edge to his style.. B N Suresh passed away in the year 1990, at the age of just 45. A tribute to a flautist of rare ability.

R Vedavalli's talent for music was identified early on by Madurai Srirangam Iyengar, From a very young age, Vedavalli won several awards in prestigious competitions including All India Radio's first prize for Classical Music and Light Classical Music, awarded by the President of India. In 2000, she received the Sangeetha Kalanidhi, She is also trained in playing the veena, and has a good command over Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil, which helps her sing with greater understanding or artha bhava.

Bhairavi is a raga with a rich feel and with a deeply classical flavour. Bhairavi is also an ancient raga, and there are dozens of well known compositions in the raga. Classics include the ata tala varnam, Viriboni, and Syama Sastri's magnum opus, the swarajati Kamakshi Amba. Periasami Thooran was a multifaceted personality. He was influenced early in life by Subramania Bharati and wrote poems and stories as a student. Thooran went on to be involved in anti-colonial literature and wrote patriotic and nationalistic songs. His song, Aadu Raatte, became something of an anthem. Thooran's songs, which number around 600 cover a wide range of subjects - nationalistic, spiritual, religious and moral - and his literary skills are evident in these songs.

A tribute to Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma. A scholar and musician with a deep knowledge of literature and music, Ralapalli used his wide understanding and his committed research to tune about 120 compositions of Annamacharya in the ragas that were mentioned in the original copper plates on which the songs were inscribed. Ralapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma has also composed songs in forms ranging from varnam and swarajati to kriti and tillana. He was awarded the Sangeeta Kalanidhi in 1974 for his contributions to Carnatic music. This programme is in connection with Ralapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma's birth anniversary on January 23.

S Rajam was a multifaceted personality - musician, painter, actor, musicologist and teacher. He popularized Koteeswara Iyer's compositions, and also recorded all of his melakarta raga kritis. Probably Rajam's most widely recognized contribution spans music and painting. He painted several carnatic music composers, including the trinity, and these paintings have now become the standard reference. Many Carnatic music composers have composed songs on holy places or kshetras. In this programme, we listen to the Carnatic compositions on Tirupati and its presiding deity Lord Venkateshwara. Of course, when one thinks of Tirupathi, one thinks also of Annamacharya, whose compositions are dedicated to the Lord of the Seven Hills. His music was for himself, and the fact that it appealed to - and continues to appeal to - the cognoscenti, is testament to his sincerity and to his greatness. Most of Syama Sastri's compositions are on goddess Kamakshi, who was his inspiration. Syama Sastri was especially adept at the laya aspect, and his mishra chapu and tisra gati compositions are some of the most beautiful composed in those beats.

Subrahmanya, the son of Shiva and Parvati, is revered as Murugan in Tamil Nadu. There are six temples in Tamilnadu, dedicated to him, called the Arupadai Veedu shrines. The Walajapet school of disciples has contributed immensely towards preserving and propagating the compositions of Tyagaraja.. Venkataramana Bhagavathar was the devoted chief disciple of the saint composer Tyagaraja. He was instrumental in recording the numerous compositions of Tyagaraja on palm leaves for posterity. Lord Shiva is given different names at different temples. In Chidambaram, He is Nataraja, in Rameswaram he is Ramanatha, in Tiruvarur, he is Tyagaraja and in Kashi he is Viswanatha. Several composers have dedicated songs to Lord Shiva at various temples. His contributions as a composer, harikatha artiste and as an overall personality in Carnatic music who wielded influence, and wielded it well, have stood the test of time. Natakurinji is a striking raga, with a wide variety of shades. and a relatively recent raga. It has great scope for elaboration, with its vakra prayogas and occasional phrases that contribute to the character of the raga. Natakurinji is ideally suited for tanam, with the sense of comfort that it has in all the three tempos - slow, medium and fast.

Over his career that lasted more than six decades, Lalgudi came to be acknowledged as a master musician. As a composer, he created varnams and tillanas, many of them in hitherto unattempted ragas; these compositions combined a demand for technical virtuosity and an easy aesthetic sensibility, quickly becoming concert staples.
