Excellent. Thanks Lakshmanji.

Hope people do not get the impression that all CM songs are at that breakneck speed :)

All good stuff. I especially enjoyed the manner in which they juxtaposed Malkauns and Hindolam in a natural way. That simple singing of Aro/Ava of Hindolam is so bright and sharp.

Demonstrating Meend and showing that is what gives that characteristic sound to HM is a good idea.

Who are the musicians featured?

I recognized Nissar Hussain Khan, Basvaraj Rajguru, Manik Varma of HM and Ramnad Krishnan and MLV of CM. I have to look at the video again and figure out other musicians.

I identified S. Rajam, V. Sethuramiah and Jasraj. Someone else identified Madras Kannan and Tanjore Upendran.
The dancer I think is Nirmala Parthasarathy.

Is not the mrdangist accompanying S.Rajam , a youngish Vellore Ramabhadran?

Lakshman,
I felt so good, watching this. I had left India by then. So, this is brand new to me.

Sethuramiah looks the same as I knew him. The other violinist Vedagiri, is the father of violinist Kumar. You can tell by looking at the picture?? Ramabhadran makes me go back so many years--my forgetting that I have seen him regularly in recent years. I miss him, an artiste I remember so well from my childhood.

These black and white clips reflect the times and to our younger members, adds another dimension to their listening experience of vintage music.

There are no complicated explanations of the science of music to baffle the regular viewers (we live in a lec-dem-parlance age now).

The attire is all simple. I notice that some northern vidvAns are in dhotis. For women, it was pre-matching blouse times--dead-match blouse color hadn't become de rigueur then. A white blouse went with any sari. Men weren't peacocks and women wore simple saris and jewelry...

As far my memory goes
In the first episode mridangam was identified as Kalyanraman by somebody
Then comes Sharafat Hussain Khan
Manik Verma with Manikrao Popatkar
MLV with R.S.Gopalakrishnan (?) violin, Vilvadri Iyer Ghatam, Tanjore Ramadas (?) Mridangam
S.Rajam with V. Sethramaiah
Ramnad Krishnan with V.L. Vedagiri
Ustad Hafiz Ahmed Khan with Nerurkar on Tabla
Jasraj
May be Badi Moti Bai Or Begum Akhthar
Sangameswar Gurav

another interesting feature is the presence of just one mike and such wonderful clarity. It may have still been recorded in a studio but still it is great.

Just chanced upon a documentary made by Satyajit Ray in the seventies about Balasaraswathi. Such a cache for me! A film about an exceptional artiste presented by another amazing artiste. Wonder if it's just me who didn't know about it all this time...

Interesting video - like arasi, I enjoyed the sartorial and also gesticulative simplicity of these yesteryear musicians. Like VK, I was also struck by the juxtaposition of faster CM with slower HM.

I also wonder if male HM musicians were more likely to accompany women than their CM counterparts.

May have something to do with the fact that everything (photographs, cine capture, etc.) was in B&W in those days. For instance, I remember listening to an interview on Madras Doordarshan (as it was then) where some of the yesteryear greats from the film industry were explaining how in the days of B&W filming, they were actually encouraged to chew pAn, as the red tint helped with the teeth not getting too 'bright' - where as these days, white teeth are an essential....
