A snippet from Kalki's 1937 review

Post by kvchellappa »

From a FB post:
Aug 1, 1937:
Kalki wrote an article in Anandavikatan: “I sat in ariyakkudi concert for 3h45m and he did not sing a single Tamizh song. It was frustrating so I told myself, ‘Let me go and hear some good Tamizh songs.’ So I went to chintamani movie.

That is so Kalki - preconceived ideas of what music should be - instead of hearing and letting his being figure out silently!

As SSI remarked : nAn pADittAn unakku pATTu enRAl ennavenRu teriyum! atai vaittu konDu en pATTaiyE vimarsikkirAyE!

SSI: "You know what is music only after I sang and showed you - now you use that to critique me?"

People like him kept many potential rasikas in the dark!

"tamizhp paTRu! pATTil adu edaRku?" enRArO?
Have love for your language. But don't bring it into classical music!--is a rough translation of the above. I am leaving out the other line of the pitAmaha for obvious reasons.
Of course, whether the quote is an exact translation of his words or not, we know not...

Then why tomtom that one should know meaning to enjoy music? TMK may as well be right.

shankarank,
Do we have to play pinnal kOlATTam (May pole dance) with every bit that we discuss? :)
