I can tell (paraphrase at least) what I heard from a Konnakkol artist a couple of weeks ago... Natavangam is more composition-bound, konnokkol has plenty of room for improvisation.

I suppose... One is an accompaniment, the other a solo.

Apologies for probably using the wrong vowels!

One more thing that I noticed was,
Natuvangam
Jathi's are sung plain/in a ragam set to a thalams
Usually simple thalam is used to comfort the dancer
Kunnukol
Jathi's are sung plain(in a textual way) also which is set to thalam
Complex thalams are also used

The talam is the talam of the song/dance. It is fixed by the program. It is the spoken equivalent of what the dancer is doing and the complexity will be equivalent. Could be very complex.

First off, aren’t the mnemonic syllables (sollu) recited and not sung, both in konnakoL and for naTTuvAngam? I’ve never heard a naTTuvanAr sing.

Yes indeed. It would probably be called kalpana swara if it was sung.
